People will need to consider turning vegetarian if the world is to conquer climate change, according to a leading authority on global warming.

In an interview with The Times, Lord Stern of Brentford said: “Meat is a wasteful use of water and creates a lot of greenhouse gases. It puts enormous pressure on the world’s resources. A vegetarian diet is better.”

Direct emissions of methane from cows and pigs is a significant source of greenhouse gases. Methane is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide as a global warming gas.

Lord Stern, the author of the influential 2006 Stern Review on the cost of tackling global warming, said that a successful deal at the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December would lead to soaring costs for meat and other foods that generate large quantities of greenhouse gases.

Guess the earth's gonna warm up, cause I ain't giving up my Ribeye's and Pork Chops.

Methane from agriculture is just one aspect of the pollution... deforestation, desertification, eutrophication, and wasted resources are also very prevalent problems with industrial meat production, especially in the developing world but also in the U.S.

I only eat fish, but not other kinds of meat, and it's not for climate or ethics reasons. Other kinds of meats are health problems waiting to happen, especially red meat.

Chief lord stern can go **** himself while I prepare the finest of smoked bovine, porcine and foul delicacies.......

I think it'd be fine as long as we all switch from cats and dogs as pets to chickens and pigs, then after they stop being fun and cute, we eat them.

The population is growing fast, and the demand for meat is as well. It's a problem with no easy solution.

/shrug he has a point. Cows fart like mad, and create global warming. However it is unrealistic to give up meat. Instead technology could change things. There is testing going on in giving cows garlic to prevent the farting, but the bi-product is that their milk tastes of garlic. Once we get past that hurdle, then it might be worth doing.

That should be a non-issue. We don't get milk from beef cattle and we don't get beef from dairy cattle.

Prime source of protein for Vegans?

Beans.

Beans = Methane... thus vegans are killing the earth.

and yet the pathetic hypocritical hack is not a vegan/vegetarian.
just another hypocritical douchebag like Gore

Giving up meat and population control are the most effective means to control greenhouse gas emissions, and abstinence is the most effective way to stop the spread of STD's. They're all completely unrealistic, though.

Humans don't have 4 stomachs, a rumen, and eat constantly 24/7.

Human waste does not run off from farmers' fields into ponds, lakes, rivers and streams, choking them of life.

Humans do not require nearly as much food as meat cows, rendering land use inefficient.

I feel bad for the cows. As a rather gassy person as well as one with IBS I can sympathize with the poor bastards. But they are too damn tasty, and I love my grill
