Typically the POTUS and VPOTUS retrain their security clearance so they can continue to receive classified intelligence briefings after leaving office as they will often act as advisors to the current POTUS.

However, Trumps was ended and he didn't get post office briefings and was not going to function as an adviser post office.

If there is evidence that documents are there, then it warrant an investigation.

However if it’s merely speculation then there would be no legal basis for one, at least as I understand these procedures.

I don't believe Trump's having so-called Top Secret documents was ever the issue. It was always about what can we prosecute him for now? Obviously his recently released tax returns turned up nothing so that was a total waste of time and energy.
