I really like this post. I'm trying to figure out what to say about it. You have me intrigued.

It has to do with the nature of Satan in Jewish mythology. The angels (malachi) are 'messengers' of God, and do not have free will. Therefore, they can only do what God lets them. There is no rebellion, there is no 'pit of fire'. Satan is one of the angels that has a big enough job to actually have a title. Ha-Shatain, or 'The accuser' is the angel of God that has the job of providing bad choices to the world. It is by being presented with bad choices, and choosing GOOD that a person can live a 'sanctified' life and rise above the mundane. That concept really doesn't lend itself to worship or rebellion.. to be avoided yet, but worshiped??

Satan is more an 'imp of the perverse' than the hugh 'out to steal your soul' figure that Satan has developed into in Christianity.

Now, as far as I can see, there are two types of Satanists. One that are not really so much 'satanists', but chose that label to rub the noses of Christians. They really don't think Satan is a real figure,

Then there is the 'anti-christian' type of Satanist. These folks, much rarer of than the 'tweak your nose' types, can be pretty scary.. they have to accept the general principles of Christianity to invert them. Depending on how serious they take it, they can be pretty sick and scary.

Look, you're free to peddle whatever religious garbage you're trying to peddle, but let's please not act for a ****ing second like it can't be proven that the world is round. It was done over 2,000 years ago and it's verifiable by anyone with a little curiousity.

That looks like a drawing. I'm not saying it hasn't been proven. I believe that it has been proven. I believe what the science and history books say on the matter. I'm just saying that the average person can't prove the world is round. They have to believe one authority or another. Today the authorities say that the world is round. We must succumb to that authority or be treated as an idiot.

We believe the world is round out of fear that we will be shamed by society for believing otherwise. This is very similar to other belief systems. We are required to believe.

That's the point that the Christians don't get. They just have this ridiculous entitlement fetish that says they're special. Sorry, they're just not. If they get to do it, everyone gets to do it. The only way to stop others from doing it is not to do it themselves. Do you think they'll ever get that through their thick skulls?

Even though atheism isnt a religion I wouldnt support some atheist organisation handing out reading material to students. Its the principle of the thing. No one should be trying to seduce students at a public school for any reason. If you had actually informed yourself about what the picture meant by clicking on one of the links, you'll know it was proven based on measuring shadows at 2 different locations then using basic trigonometry. Anyone with a little curiosity can do this and prove it to themselves. This is also not nearly the only way to prove it, as Zinthaniel pointed out in post #286. You don't have to take it on faith.

Frankly I don't understand why you're so hard up to call the world being round faith. It's not, it's fact and it's provable by anyone who feels like investigating it.

Very true, and since Christian religions are the majority of religions in the US its almost always Christian religions trying to put their foot in the door. I dont know how many times I have been told that Christians are the majority and I should just zip my lips. A majority means that the ones that are bad are more visible and that there are plenty of them.

This makes me wonder if they even understand what their faith is? A quick look at a dictionary shows that if one has faith in a elevator working it isnt the equivalent of having faith in a god. Their argument is either ignorant or a naive misunderstanding of what the bible means by faith in god or both. Actually if you think about it, the argument that faith in a elevator (or whatever) not killing you being the same as a faith in a god. Is like them admitting that atheists are correct, that the only way one can believe in a god is by having unquestioning belief. To act like little children on Xmas eve.

I think most members of the Church of Satan, while not believing in an actual Satan, view Satan as the good guy in the Bible. A character that championed knowledge and stood up to a tyrannical God.

That would be the Christian view of Satan, of course. The Jewish version is decidedly different anyway.
