Chris Smith (R-NJ) for House Speaker

I am looking at it from the realistic way.

The GOP doesn't want the Dems help. Any help given to them would be rejected because of the party purity that the GOP has imposed upon itself. So not only do the Dems have nothing to gain from trying to save the GOP from itself but it is kind of a strange cause to take up and even place the tiniest bit of blame on them for the extremism of the GOP.

There are already plenty inside the GOP who have zero care for this country and are UnAmerican scum who would burn the country down to retain power, the moderates in the GOP seem to be okay with having them in the party so why should the Dems care?

That situation doesn't change by standing off to the side and not doing anything about it. In fact, that just makes it worse.

It only changes when you actually do something to help change it.

The parties are not in the constitution, in fact we were warned against them by our first president, yet they have usurped our government.

That is a silly compliant.

What is in the Constitution is that the House gets to set it's own rules and that is done by Majority.

Forming coalitions is the best way to secure a majority... it is the nature of things.

There is no reason for the Dems to help the GOP while they are melting down.

I still don't understand why this is the responsibility of the party that is out of power.

The problem is that the parties are determining the coalitions because they divide the moderates.

You don't think the Democrats have a vested interest in getting the Biden Administration's legislative agenda passed in some way, shape or form?

It's how the world works. One can be pure and out of party politics and get nothing done... that is their choice... but for all the other politicians they know that they have to be a in a coalition to achieve literally anything.

This is getting weird.

It is not the fault of the Democrats that the GOP is a bunch of crazies.

If the situation was reversed no one would be calling for the GOP to bail the Dems out.

Well, you know what the definition of insanity is, Jezcoe.... it's doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. The Republicans aren't the only ones to whom that applies... the Democrats are on the same repetition wobble. Maybe it's high time someone went outside the box and actually tried to shake things up and try to get better results?

I don't understand this need to make the GOP's foibles the responsibility of the Democrats.

As long as the GOP allows crazies and outright frauds into their caucus none of this is going to change.

Neither party is free of corruption. Unless you can throw off your partisanship you only see it on the other side.

I'm not talking about bailing them out... I'm talking about playing our game instead of theirs.

Hakeem Jefferies isn't winning the Speakership this time around. Every time the Democrats vote for him, they're essentially wasting their votes. So why not use their votes to engineer a compromise candidate with moderate Republicans to come up with a Speaker that actually has the potential to get legislation passed?

If Trump were still President, I'd agree with you... let'em put their own house in order.

But with Biden in the Oval Office, I figure Democrats have a vested interest in getting things done. I don't get why you can't see that.

The GOP is still the party of Trump. This shows it. The Dems gain nothing from even attempting to help the GOP out.

I don’t see why that is an argument that the Dems should be responsible for the GOP in any way.

Who's helping anyone out? At the end of the process, someone is going to be Speaker. I'd sooner have that person someone who can make a deal than someone who can't.

Well then why don't these moderate GOP members caucus with the Dems and give the Dems the majority? Why is it on the Dems to help out the GOP?

Because the Democrats aren't the majority in the House. The Republicans are. They deserve to have a Republican Speaker. The country deserves that Speaker not to be a wingnut.

So then it is up to the GOP to elect their leader and not the Dems.... see how that works?

Except in the case of Speaker, the Democrats get a vote. That's an opportunity. The question is do we try to avail ourselves of that opportunity... or do we just let it pass?

Hey if McCarthy comes to the Dems and asks for help and is willing to give them concessions then they should take him over the coals and take everything that they can get from him.

They gain nothing by offering to save his ass. He has to ask them. Grovel even.

McCarthy is DOA. Whoever replaces him is either going to be the left of him or the right. My suggestion is for the Democrats to put their finger on the scale to shift it left.

There is no left in the GOP.

Put up a republican pro-choice thinker which would be more representative of the nation.......
Why are Democrats and Republicans in the House not setting up a joint work agenda for 2023-2025 and sign a work agreement contract, then jointly elect a speaker ? Or elect 2 speakers: a Republican one that serves for a year and a Democratic one that serves for a year afterwards.

By signing a joint work contract for the next 2 years, the House would get things done that both parties like and voters would be impressed that these overpaid, underqualified political pricks can get something done.
No matter who these extreme radicals put forth they will be fake republicans with the same extreme agenda
which will not be good for USA economics ....... nor women.

They have no one that is worth a damn .........

There is no left in the GOP.

Sure there is.... they're among the 203 that are voting for McCarthy. The 19 who refuse to are the far-right. If the Democrats don't reach out to the Republican moderates, then eventually they're all going to settle on someone who is acceptable to the 19. The tail is going to wag the dog. If we can form a bipartisan coalition, then the 19 will be dealt out of the final result.

It is the fault of the 203 GOP members and not the Dems for an inability to pick their leader.

Seriously… why do the Dems become responsible for everything?
