China is surpassing the U.S. economy at this very moment, 2014 figures are expected to show. The Financial Times (and others) are reporting the U.S. failing to maintain world economic leadership it's held for 142 years.

The death of American leadership is "tragic," said the author of this post. The U.S. intentionally threw away it's lead, through excessive regulation and restrictions on individual freedoms. Government-run education led the way, dropping the U.S. from #1 in the world in past decades to #30 currently (according to NPR). Time Magazine has the U.S. as low as 79th, in some categories.

Perhaps the best indicator of economic prosperity is the "freedom index." Freedom leads to prosperity, which leads to economic strength. Here, the U.S. ranks 12th, meaning that further economic deterioration is expected. With Obamacare's provisions to force-feed citizens against their will, both the freedom index and America's economic outlook are expected to continue their decline. Yes, the Supreme court ruled that with the collective paying for your health, the state could force broccoli down your throat, as well as forced-injections and other measures that will eventually be imposed on the American people.

"As long as its citizenry continues to vote for socialism, America's decline will continue," said the author.

You had better eat your broccoli, it's good for you.

The starving people in North Korea would be mighty glad to have it.

Broccoli was George Bush's favourite. He went to war after eating broccoli.

If it's all the same, I'd rather we not take our cues on individual freedom and adequacy of regulation from China.

I would actually be quite upset if at some point the Chinese did not surpass us. They have more than 4 times as many people to feed then we do. I don't understand why people are so up in arms about it. Do the Chinese not deserve the standard of living that we in the western countries have? If you don't think they do then maybe you should be alarmed that their economy is larger then ours. The average American still makes 4 times more than the average person living in China.

Well, the U.S. did get the crap kicked out of it between 2001-2008. 9/11, two outrageously expensive Wars and the financial crisis that very nearly took us down. 2009 to today has not been especially great either: an anemic recovery, a couple times where the economy nearly stalled or did stall, several prolonged and continuing qualitative easings, subpar job creation, large deficits and a debt that is probably unpayable at this point.

While it is a nice heartfelt sentiment to care about the well-being of other people, there really is little to no room for morality in geopolitics. When China surpasses the U.S. economically the clock starts of when they also surpass us militarily, which as one can imagine is not a particularly well-received or a particularly feel good moment for America or the West in general. Granted, it would take a considerable amount of time to accomplish that feat, but a China with the world's best economy would certainly try to elevate themselves over us militarily.

I don't think there is any way to stop it from happening. THEY HAVE 4 TIMES THE POPULATION WE HAVE! You simply can not and will not overcome that. They have the ability to produce at 4 times the rate we can. The only way to keep that from occurring is to basically starve china to death. While I am a patriot in the sense that I love the USA.. I can not be hypocritical in my love for the USA based on it's concepts of liberty and freedom by suppressing the liberty and freedom of someone from China. It's good for an American, but not for a Chinese? That seems racist. Again, completely against the American concept. To me, being American not only means wanting freedom and liberty for Americans, but goes further than that.

The Jones's make $100K and have 2 kids but, with Mr. Smith's latest raise, the Smith's now make $101K and have 10 kids - can the Smith's then say that they have surpassed the wealth of the Jones's? Since the US has but 1/3 of the population of China then it seems that China would need 3X more wealth to consider itself to be more wealthy than the US. ;)

Socialism for corporations, or socialism for the masses?

I wonder why people are so worried about China. China's growth really has been quite stagnant over the past few years and is slowing down compared to what it was before. China has a HUGE poor class (over a billion people) which they simply exploit so as to become rich. Their one baby policy has created massive amounts of infant gendercide which in some areas ****ed China so hard there is 1 woman for every 10 men.

China still has yet to fully modernize an the technology in China is nowhere near that of the U.S. on a national level and military level.

I do believe that we should up our game, but it'll be decades before China actually fully surpasses the U.S. Technology-wise in terms of the military, EASILY decades. In fact China was dependent on the west for modernization of its military.

**** you Israel, you sold our technologies to the Chinese, thankfully we caught wind of it and tied that loose end up, China's modernization is going to be dependent on Europe now, therefor, without innovation themselves their military will never surpass ours in regards to technology advancement.

My advice to the U.S.: Let China have all the factory jobs, stop complaining about American jobs like these going overseas. Many would argue that we moved away from an industrial economy and are now in an intellectual economy. Let China have factories, but if we keep the best brains of the world in the U.S. innovation will continue, companies will be borne, wealth will CERTAINLY grow, and we will be fine. Bringing back jobs like sitting your ass down in a factory and putting Ipads together (sorry China but this is true) isn't needed.

Oh please, China has a non-existent middle class and its poor class literally makes what. 2 dollars a year? We shouldn't be competing to bring back factory jobs like many Americans are asking for. We're better than that, we need to evolve as much as we can to fit into the post industrial nation that we truly are.

Surpassed in what terms? Our GDP remains significantly higher with roughly a quarter of the population, median incomes lag far behind our own and we remain the premier tech hub of the world. Our influence on the global economy positively dwarfs China in virtually every significant measure.

Are you kidding me? If folks are no longer going to make things then are they going to make noise instead? Can you give us an example of a "post industrial" nation?

You are kidding right

China has a middle class of around 300-400 million people. Go to any of the larger cities in the east and you will see a large number of modern apartments, a large number of cars. The poor outside of the rural farmers, are earning probably 300-400 a month in USD (ie factory workers and service staff)

Despite what you think about China the jury is out on a proven society that have been around for 5000 years.
The US is only 236 years with wealth created from slavery.....you are the ones with something to prove.
The jury isn't out yet on this nation....you come back after 1000 years or so and let's see how well you're doing.
But luckily we don't even have to wait 1000 year ...check out these 2 nations in just 20 years.

The Chinese are doing many things right, there is some chaos and many issues they still need to improve on, but their energy is being spent more efficiently on building that nation. And they are patient, they will wait rather than run around the globe Colonizing poorer countries or propping up strong-men to steal resources. Ironically, the Chinese leader don't see this as a competition or race....their goal isn't world dominance ...rather all they seek is to make their country stronger.

I keep saying if was a 20 year old today in college, and not on track to play in the NFL, NBA or MLB, I would be taking as many Chinese courses as I can or looking to do some exchange program in China. Because that is where the real opportunities will be in the coming years. America have simply ran out of tricks. I know many on the right find it convenient to blame Obama, but this is something I've been watching long before Obama took office. America simply have a physiology like that neighbor who'll buy expensive cars and clothes to impress others ....using a credit card to pay for it! This isn't Obama's doing .....and it will be America's un-doing!

Personally I would doubt China's GDP figures, because of of you know, the CCP does not have a history of telling the truth. We also need to see what happens when their giant real estate bubble pops and with it most of their growth.

REALLY?

Um, this may come as a shock to you, but China's got 4X as many people as we do...and since most of them are paid peanuts, thanks, but no thanks - our way's better. See those pictures of that ultramodern downtown area of Shanghai? Try Googling pictures of what life is like, say, 30 miles away in the shantytowns.

And you complain about how it was "government-run education" that ruined our lead on education - dude, you DO realize, of course, that pretty much every single nation that's doing better than we are when it comes to education ALSO has "government-run education", right? So that SHOULD tell you that the problem's NOT government, but something else...like, perhaps, "Let's make education better by slashing education funding!!!!"

And this is what you want to see isn't it? There is no end in any state in America of DUMP and DECAY!! Have you wandered to some small towns in NC, Mississippi and see the squalor there? Have you gone to many urban areas and see the condition there? You have people inNY making almost six figure salary who live with room mates in roach and rat infested apartments ....did you know that?

China is transitioning so there is some chaos there, they are modernizing the cities and they are also enacting a plan of "TOWNIZATION"..to modernize the rural regions. The people are demanding better air and water quality and they government is responding.

There are areas in China today begging for factory workers ...do you know why? The ensuing generation are rejecting these jobs for better wages ....this is telling where this nation is headed. Dude take a look at China subway compared to the dump you have in NY for example ....look at the old rusted 50+ year old trains without AC ...compared to China's rail system. China have trains that can reach speed at 200+ mph ...comfortably....want to try that on any US rail system...:lamo

But again, Americans are so afraid, so jealous of this nation who's slowly improving themselves..not through colonization, or slavery, or using strong-men to steal resources....but through simple old fashion hard work!!

China's retirement system is privately funded in individual accounts. China's health care is likewise privately funded. Many U.S. are flying to China (and India) for health care. China is the lender, U.S. is the borrower. China's military has brand-spanking new hardware, utilizing modern warfare techniques, like self-learning swarm-weapons. China graduates ten-times as many PhD's as the U.S. They've out-capitalist'ed us. Beating us at our own game. Using individual liberty and freedoms in just a sufficient manner to out-pace us. Slow growth for China is 8%. U.S. growth this quarter is 0.1% and likely to be revised into negative territory.

If we're not worried, we should be. And there was no need for this. We could have ridden our lead for a century or more. Not by holding China back, but by keeping our own economic freedoms. Someone broached the ridiculous subject of post-industrial economies. There is no such thing. Wealth (the thing that adds to our standard of living) occurs when dirt is converted into product. Without that creation, all we are doing is selling each other old junk at our respective yard sales.

.

According to the Index of Economic Freedom rankings compiled by the Heritage Foundation and the Wall Street Journal (both rather conservative outfits), the U.S. ranks 12th in the world in economic freedom.

China ranks 137th.

So if they're beating us, it appears they're playing a slightly different game.

Yes, I posted that same link several pages ago, but thanks for keeping up. Who's #1 on the freedom index? Hong Kong. Where is Hong Kong? China. Not only are you pages behind, but not even aware of geography?

China does seem to have worked out some interesting rules to maximize performance, while keeping their boot on everyone's throat, but America has too. For example, Chinese aren't allowed to invest offshore. That's why they have so many empty cities. No place to invest.

Many think the big push for immigration reform isn't aimed at Hispanics, rather at Chinese. Chinese rightly think they could control America with fifty or so million immigrants and an American open border policy would enable China to insert millions before America knew what hit us. That's why China has so much American land in remote areas, despite offshore investment restrictions. They are planning carefully, as always. This plan relieves China of their over-population and allows them to take over the American continent at the same time. Not by force, but by pure demographics.

Does that mean you don't dispute that your revered China (which apparently is "Using individual liberty and freedoms in just a sufficient manner to out-pace us") is less free than 136 other countries, including us?
