some empirical data
The Korean press has confirmed that “the United States and China have begun behind-the-scenes contact in relation to the ‘tariff war,’ ” and a high-ranking Chinese delegation was photographed entering the US Treasury Department in the early morning hours of April 24.

  • They are in the huge piles of containers that missed the April 9 tariff deadline, sitting in Chinese ports. These are filled with goods that the tariffs have priced out of the US market. Meanwhile, cargo bookings for container voyages between China and the US are down by half.
  • They are in deserted factory floors all along the coast of China, where workers are being laid off by the tens of thousands. Textile, toy, electronic, and furniture factories are just a few of the industries being crushed by the tariffs.
  • They are in the empty streets and shuttered shops of the surrounding industrial towns and cities, whose one-time customers — the now unemployed factory workers — can’t afford to eat or shop in their favorite noodle stand or convenience stores.
America is by far China’s largest customer, absorbing about one-sixth of China’s exports. If the tariffs stay in place for any length of time, economists estimate that 80% of China’s goods will be priced out of the American market, representing a loss of almost $400 billion.

As many as 10 million Chinese workers might lose their jobs over the next few weeks, says Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, a number that could easily double in the months that follow as the ripple effects of the slowdown tear through the economy.

Trump knew this would always happen.

The question now is this: Will the negotiations work? Will China try to get Trump to reduce the tariffs, while they slow walk the negotiations? Will Trump allow that to happen?

Lol.

US consumers will have to pay more and face shortages and MAGA thinks that's winning.

Lol.
Pay more taxes? last time I checked somebody still has to fund the goverment. Funny that liberals have finally found a tax they didn't like.

Who said anything about taxes?

Oh, I see, you admit tariffs are taxes.

(y)
Where do tariffs go? Go to the goverment. I think we all know that except for the masses of whiners who keep complaining.. Gee.. who might that be?

Well, taxes were a bad thing according to "conservatives" until Trump came along...

Lmaooo citing an NY Post opinion piece.

There are NO WINNERS in a trade war, but the ABSOLUTE victim of this trade war will be the American consumer.

I have yet to find one right winger who can coherently articulate why this trade war is being fought in the first place, how we were being "ripped off," and what an endgame would look like.

Cause the reality is that Trump can't even articulate it other than the dude is just a true believer in tariffs.

Seriously, what does a "trade deal" with China entail? Are we going to force them to buy overpriced American goods? Are we going to force them to charge more for their own goods so we buy less of them, thus "fixing" the trade deficit?

The better question is WHO PAYS THE PRICE.

In an economy where the average working class person is struggling, this administration insists on slashing taxes on billionaires while implementing essentially the most regressive tax hike in modern history. Tell me how that makes any ****ing sense.

By the way, there's still no amount of tariff-collecting that will offset the damage to the debt/deficit done by needless billionaire tax cuts and the GDP contraction as the result of destruction of key government jobs.

We're gonna make them buy a bunch of F-150s at gunpoint which will just generally annoy their citizenry by being obnoxious and large. Which does me a fat deal of good.

Tariffs most directly will impact the Americans who have the least amount of money to spare.

A working class American who can barely keep their head above water will now find themselves paying more for items they need.

And you find this “winning”?

Jesus the idiocracy of how MAGAs twist themselves into pretzels to try to “own the libs” and defend Trump is astounding.

Conservatives have found a tax they like. It will mostly be paid by the poor and working class. Those that haven't been paying much if any income tax.
I distinguish between conservatives and MAGAs.

I don’t think a single actual conservative supports this - it is antithesis of traditional conservative “free market capitalism” support.

Trump knew this would always happen.
This is some grade A ball washing right here. He didn't know shit and he certainly couldn't predict the outcome.

I am happy that the outcome might be positive, considering where we were a few weeks ago, but please; spare us the bullshit that President Trump knew what he was doing.

I take it you've never heard of China's seven deadly sins.

The Post is not a valid source.

You know this.

Please find a valid source and try again.

the conclusion is opinion, the article is factual
...and you know that how? Nothing in that article is supported by verifiable facts, nothing.
