CHICAGO (Reuters) - The Chicago Teachers Union has sued the nation's third largest school district, saying Mayor Rahm Emanuel's campaign to reform or close underperforming public schools discriminates against African-American teachers and staff.

The federal lawsuit filed on Wednesday and announced on Thursday is the latest battle with the city since teachers staged a week-long strike in September. It alleges that more than half of the tenured teachers fired in the most recent round of school closings and turnarounds were African American.

But blacks make up less than 30 percent of the tenured teaching staff in the district and 35 percent of the tenured teacher population in the failing schools, the lawsuit claims.

The suit in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois seeks an immediate moratorium on any additional school closings in the city. Emanuel, a former top White House adviser to President Barack Obama, and the school district are expected to close more schools in the coming years because of declining enrollment and a huge budget deficit.

The school district has until the end of March 2013 to say which schools it wants to close, and it has appointed a commission to study the matter. The union argues that while the school district is closing existing neighborhood schools, primarily in minority neighborhoods, it is simultaneously approving new, mostly nonunion charter schools.

This fall, public teachers in Chicago staged the first strike against the district in 25 years to protest reforms supported by Emanuel, including teacher evaluations. The teachers were given a pay raise as part of the strike settlement.....snip~

Well, that didn't take long for the suit to be filed under Racial Discrimination with CPS Schools. Immediately blaming race as the factor for Poor teachers. Course this was after the School Union agreed to terms with Emanuel and the Rest of the DNC. Which now they would also use the same argument to try and prevent more Charter Schools from being started up in those same poor neighborhoods where the Education was failing the kids.

Also Since CPS schools have went on strike.....just about every two weeks another School District in and around the Chicagoland Area has gone on Strike. All playing off what CPS schools did. Moreover they have known Emanuel and the Democrats had stated they were coming out with New Pension Reform For the Teachers. Which will be affecting their union. Thoughts?

Everyone should know, by now, that Mayor Rahm Emanuel is a racist - jail him immediately for these gross civil rights violations. ;)

What do you think Ttwtt? Now why would the Union cry out Discrimination against their own Politicians?

The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in federal court in Chicago. The plaintiffs are seeking class-action status.

The teachers — Donald Garrett Jr., Robert Green and Vivonell Brown Jr. — say the practice of firing all the staff at so-called "turnaround" schools has led to a steady decline in black teachers in the school district.....snip~

They are seeking Class action Status. Yet all 3 Teachers were fired for being bad teachers.

To keep their power to control the actions of the gov't. If supporting them with money (the carrot) is not effective then suing them in court (the stick) must be used. ;)

If the schools are performing poorly, and they're the most poorly performing schools, then the data speaks for itself. This is just a waste of money on the part of the union.

All of my contact indicates that Rahm's support comes from the limo libs and off the back of those youthful enthusiasts of Obama . The rank and file, city workers, teachers, and the like are not pleased to say the least. A viable contender could unseat him.

If you'll note I said contact not "contacts" just so there is no confusion. :)

Basically every city worker, Union rep, CPS, CPD, CFD and a few others I wouldn't want to name have no love for the guy. Now if you go anywhere in Lakeview, Lincoln Park, or Old Town, well its a big love fest...

I don't think this has anything to do with Obama or his policies.

I don't like Rahm emanuel and I hope he gets his ass handed to him. I do however don't see that Obama is to blame and people trying to make this about liberal/democrat ideology hitting on the very people said ideology is supposed to benefit is foolish. It is more likely a situation that happened because of the way the education system is and because of the people who work for the city. Completely insulated from political ideology.

I would agree with you. Plus I didn't recall any saying it should be. Other than this putting Democrats at odds with each other.
