Chicago Mayor Proposes Government-Run Grocery Stores - A Necessary Step Towards Soviet-Style Central Planning

They literally give several examples of markets and supermarkets in inner cities that pulled out due to crime.

Does not matter to them.

As they are not this community, according to that poster it does not matter at all. They will reject absolutely anything that they do not agree with, that is painfully obvious.

Oh yes, with all of the references I keep providing.

As I said, you simply reject anything you do not believe.

Tell me, how many "Food deserts" have you lived in? How many ghettos have you lived in? How many shoplifters have you dealt with?

Typical behavior from those that have never had to live with such a situation.

It is probably worth pointing out why parts of Chicago lack access to grocery stores.

Government ran or not, you have to have basic law and order

The organized theft ring/flash mob crime needs to be dealt with. It's organized crime and should be prosecuted as such. I think criminal justice reform was meant to stop throwing guys in overcrowded prisons for snatching a carton of milk or chewing gum. Being part of a mob that ransacks businesses that are part of the community is entirely different and I favor throwing the mother****ing book at anyone who even 'likes' it on social media.

It's organized crime and should be prosecuted as such.

They won't. It's easier to just have them plead out to petty theft, even when they are caught with thousands of dollars worth of stolen goods and have stolen hundreds of thousands of dollars over a year or more.

Just like they refuse to prosecute any that use violence in committing violence in their crime. Don't bother with robbery charges, just let it go at petty theft.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson wants to open city-owned grocery stores to serve neighborhoods where Walmart and Whole Foods stores have closed.

"All Chicagoans deserve to live near convenient, affordable, healthy grocery options. We know access to grocery stores is already a challenge for many residents, especially on the South and West sides. A better, stronger, safer future is one where our youth and our communities have access to the tools and resources they need to thrive. My administration is committed to advancing innovative, whole-of-government approaches to address these inequities." said Mayor Brandon Johnson,

“The City of Chicago is reimagining the role government can play in our lives by exploring a public option for grocery stores via a municipally owned grocery store and market,” said Ameya Pawar/Economic Security Project.

Also, a new woke term "food justice" is introduced:

“The strides being made in the realm of food justice are now poised for a significant advancement towards innovative solutions,” said Anton Seals Jr., Lead Steward of Grow Greater Englewood

I'll take this more seriously if you use your erroneous definitions of communism and socialism towards Social Security, TVA, North Dakota's public bank, telling folks what they can learn/read/listen/watch, National Flood Insurance where folks like me get to pay for red staters to rebuild numerous times because they choose to live in places known to flood....

I mean, seriously, take your fake and hypocritical outrage and knock it down a few decibels.

Or, at least develop a proper understanding of the concepts of socialism and communism and quit using them incorrectly when you also mention the word soviets as well.

BTW, for the record, I have no use for either socialism or communism.

National Flood Insurance where folks like me get to pay for red staters to rebuild numerous times because they choose to live in places known to flood

You mean like the entire state of Florida and huge parts of Texas, along with Mississippi and Louisiana? Which primarily flood tens of thousands of square miles because of huge storms and hurricanes? What, you think it would be better if we just abandon about 20% of the nation?

And then there is the second most flooded state, Pennsylvania.

Care to try again without the nonsensical political garbage?

I may be wrong but my sense is that things are about to move back in the other direction, and I guess that in time the result will be maybe a better balance between what had been criminal justice abuses and what we have now, which is chaos.

I still think justice reform is/was necessary but a lot of policy decisions at the state and local level were immediate reactions to some of these high-profile police-involved killings. Some states and jurisdictions were already moving in the right direction in the years before the George Floyd killing but in the wake of that event, I think local and state governments, agencies felt the need to do something, anything to show they were reforming. Unlike what was happening before 2020, these post-2020 ideas were not well thought-out and were implemented in haste.

Whatever you want to call it, but it's not communism unless that same government establishes communes to grow the produce and raise the meat for that grocery story.
When the gubmint starts running commercial stores, its pretty much the same as what the Soviets did.

And even worse to me, they are just as bad if not worse as they show no intention of admitting things are not working as they had planned and trying to fix things.

In things like this, the biggest problem to me was removing the repeat offender laws. I have no problem giving somebody a second chance, but some will never take advantage of that and continue to behave badly. Especially if there is no real punishment for them to do so even if they are caught.

I saw that quite literally several years ago when I caught somebody stealing over $200 of high end alcohol. When the cops showed up and asked me if I wanted him arrested, I declined. I simply wanted him cited, and given a PC 602 (formal trespass notice). He was given his ticket and notified if he returned he would be arrested and sent on his way.

And sure enough, a week later I caught him yet again stealing over $150 in high end alcohol. This time after I stopped him I immediately put him in handcuffs (which I did not do the first time), and as we were waiting for the cops he begged me for a second chance. I simply shook my head and told him I already gave him a second chance, and he blew it. And when the cops arrived, he was given a ticket for the theft and taken to jail for the trespass. Of which he was sentenced to three months in the county jail.

A lot of the stores in California are starting to use California Penal Code 602 to ensure that repeat offenders are locked up. Trespassing after a formal trespass notice has been given is a misdemeanor, an offense that mandates arrest and can carry up to six months in jail even on a first offense. Although that only works if they are stopped again at the same location.

Not if there is competition and consumers can go elsewhere.

But it would not surprise me if they are horrible in what they have. If anybody wants to know what "Government run stores" are like, ask somebody who is in the military about the commissary on base.

My wife and I shopped at them for many years, and they are often far more expensive than shopping out in town. As regular stores will have sales, the commissary rarely does (and by law can not price their merchandise lower than the average price of all commercial stores in the area). And one thing you almost never buy there is meat or produce. Their quality of both of those items is often horrible, but it can be a good place for dry goods. Plus in many areas they will have a larger ethnic selection than the local area because they try to meet those demands of those who are stationed there.

The commissary at Fort Bliss for example had a large area dedicated just to food from Germany, as there was a large German contingent on the base. And when we were in North Carolina, that was the only place we could find the Hispanic items (specifically coffee and flan) that my wife wanted. Brands we found at every grocery store in California we never saw in North Carolina outside of the commissary.

I can almost guarantee that any "Government run store" in Chicago will be no different then a military commissary. And the selection and quality will be lower, and the prices higher.

It kind of goes back to what I long said about "government health care". I deal with that myself, it's called the VA. And it is among the worst health care in the country. I finally got to see my doctor last month, after making an appointment in January. But at least I finally got my eyeglasses that I requested last year.

No, it is quite the opposite.

It is a monopoly because they want to use that as a means to control the behavior of people.

Hell, I have even lived in areas that had blue laws, that allowed no alcohol sales at all. It has not a damned thing with "communism", such laws have been in place in much of this nation pretty much since it was founded. It is entirely based on trying to enforce morality.
Yeah I get that. I only brought it up to point out to the OP that this, if anything, is a lot closer to communism - in a right of center state no less - than what the LA mayor is apparently proposing. He disagrees.
