How can this be? I was told by many on the left that there is no voter fraud taking place in the US.

It seems this investigation by the local CBS affiliate in Los Angeles, has uncovered something of a political unicorn.

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A comparison of records by David Goldstein, investigative reporter for CBS2/KCAL9, has revealed hundreds of so-called dead voters in Southern California, a vast majority of them in Los Angeles County.


“He took a lot of time choosing his candidates,” said Annette Givans of her father, John Cenkner.


Cenkner died in Palmdale in 2003. Despite this, records show that he somehow voted from the grave in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010.


But he’s not the only one.


CBS2 compared millions of voting records from the California Secretary of State’s office with death records from the Social Security Administration and found hundreds of so-called dead voters.


Specifically, 265 in Southern California and a vast majority of them, 215, in Los Angeles County alone.


The numbers come from state records that show votes were cast in that person’s name after they died. In some cases, Goldstein discovered that they voted year after year.


Across all counties, Goldstein uncovered 32 dead voters who cast ballots in eight elections apiece, including a woman who died in 1988. Records show she somehow voted in 2014, 26 years after she passed away.

The key phrase is, "Across all counties, Goldstein uncovered 32 dead voters who cast ballots in eight elections apiece, including a woman who died in 1988. Records show she somehow voted in 2014, 26 years after she passed away."

"32 dead voters". Across ALL COUNTIES. That means a maximum of 32 extra votes per election, out of the tens of millions in Southern California.

Whereas the Right pushes laws that are shown will disenfranchise literally hundreds of thousands of registered voters every election. And why does the Right want this? It boils down to what Paul Weyrich - founder of the Heritage Foundation - said in front of an audience that included Ronald Reagan:

"I don't want everybody to vote. Elections are not won by a majority of the people. They never have been from the beginning of our country and they are not now. As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down."

As GC points out, we are talking about 256 votes spread across 8 elections - that's 32 per election.

No one is claiming that voter fraud doesn't happen. We are arguing that the effort to prevent voter fraud which, empirically, amounts to about 0.0000005% of the total votes cast is disproportionate considering that it has the ability to disenfranchise millions of voters.

If Republicans are loosing because Democrats managed to find 32 fraudulent votes out of the millions cast each year...well...yea...then the Republicans are doing a really terrible job of getting their own votes.

That's just ONE form of voter fraud. Do you think that it's the only one??? Do you think that due to the combination of Cali's. motor voter law and no longer requiring proof of citizenship to get a driver's license, that there aren't a lot of non-citizens/illegal immigrants voting in our elections??? This article just points out the easiest form of voter fraud to identify, there are lot's more where that came from and in some districts, it could easily be enough to change the outcome of an election.

You are extrapolating an outcome changing event on EXTREMELY LITTLE evidence and EXTREMELY LARGE amounts of conjecture.

Is it possible? Sure.

But considering that the possibility of a single vote changing the outcome of an election, even a low turnout election, is incredibly low - that is unlikely.
 
In 2005 the Attorney General election in my state was decided by fewer than 50 votes. If this article is true, than it is easy to see how a few illegal votes can swing an election and have real implications.


It seems the right is showing their aliveophobia, and allowing their bigotry for the dead to show. The left is more progressive. They allow men with penises to use women's rooms if the choose because that is how they identify, and also support those whom are dead in allowing them to vote if they choose. Just because you are no longer breathing doesn't mean you don't identify with still believing you're alive.

there is 'extremely little evidence' because the only people investigating this type of thing are guys like this investigative journalist and we don't have a voter id to help prevent it. I would bet money that if we had more comprehensive investigations we would find tens of thousands of dead voters alone every election. I would also bet that we would find thousands of people who voted multiple times.

And with unlimited funds available, the research has never been done.

Or it was and the results were lackluster.

If it was a "real" thing we'd all know it by now. Backed up by verifiable research. That it hasn't been is proof enough that there's nothing to see here.

Its a billion dollar election. How much could it cost?

Republicans have been crying about this ffor a long time. Tearing all the hair from their chests.

In a citizens united world, why hasn't a thorough study been done? Perfect job for a 501(c)(4), by definition.

Why haven't election investors not paid to make sure tthe elections are clean? They spend a lot of money pushing voter ID laws, no money proving they are necessary.

Sounds mighty fishy.

Voter ID laws only address IN-PERSON voter fraud. This is VOTE-BY-MAIL voter fraud.

I'd guess that some of these cases are simply that there's more than one person with the same name in the same area *gasp* the horror !!

So no, please don't beat this dead horse that democrats deny any voter fraud and somehow this disproves it. Democrats generally don't want to disenfranchise eligible voters for non-existent problems like IN-PERSON voter fraud.

Um, 'scuse you, but where is your HARD DATA? Show us the hard data, showing the thousands and thousands of fraudulent votes that you're absolutely sure MUST be happening.

Otherwise, voter ID is simply just another solution in search of a non-existent problem.

And what's sad is that those on the right who actually believe in protecting every eligible citizen's right to vote, really have no clue what voter ID is all about...because it ain't and never was about "protecting every eligible citizen's right to vote". If you were half as cynical about your own side as you are of ours, you'd know that already.

That was in that particular case. Nowhere in the article or in the video report, did they say that the other votes were cast by mail-in ballots.

Maybe- maybe not.

However, my overall point is that in-person voter fraud, the kind that's addressed by voter ID laws, is the specific form of voter fraud that democrats argue is negligible. This article doesn't go far enough so as to demonstrate that these are examples of in-person voter fraud.
