Symbols of communism and marijuana and a prediction that "capitalism will fail" aren't exactly the sort of end-of-year messages you'd expect from an eighth grader.
But that's precisely what some students at the Black Pine Circle School, a private school in Berkeley, Calif., chose to include in their "Class of 2007" mosaic.
The symbols, which are prominently displayed outside the school, have prompted questions about the appropriateness of images like a hammer and sickle and a marijuana leaf on school grounds — and have led critics to say they are blatant proof of political indoctrination of young children.

Who says Berkley isn't crazy, stupid kids being force fed idiocy...

Wow...well I suppose it's kids and all. But still...the sickle and hammer!?
I'm more disturbed by the flag of France. :2razz:
Literally word for word what I was going to say.
WOW! Stupid typo on my part. I meant to say that there isn't liberal indoctrination. Sorry for that.Being someone who is still rather young I know where the kid that did that is coming from. I went to a private school as well and also dabbled in things such as Anarchy, Communism, and Socialism. I think that the reason we do this is because it's against the establishment, but also because you want a better man-kind and things like Communism sound great on paper. Obviously, those political systems are all terribly flawed just as complete Capitalism.
Bottom-line it isn't dangerous. The kid's views will change as he grows older and becomes more immersed in politics.
Being a student of public and private schooling, and now in a public college; I argue that there is liberal indocrination.
Do some teacher's have opinions that they express? Yes.
For me history was objective, so far as this happened and afterwards this happened. Common sense puts two and two together - Cause and Effect.
Just because you don't want it to be true doesn't make it so.

It's quite apparent that the accusation of "political indoctrination" only exists because the political symbols placed on the mosaic were leftist in nature. Had they been rightist in nature, those condemning them now would likely be complimenting the precocity of the students. As it were, there's not sufficient evidence of "indoctrination," particularly since parental influence has a major role in forming the ideological and political views of effectively everyone, and isn't necessarily "indoctrination."
Yes, because nobody would be alarmed by kids painting a Nazi flag.
Well, Nazism implies beliefs in racist ideology even apart from jingoistic nationalism and fascism. Anti-capitalism and support for communism doesn't quite imply the same; there doesn't seem a sound basis for comparison. That said, my own personal comments wouldn't have changed if a swastika or Nazi flag had been painted.
Well then what other right wing symbols are there for a kid to paint? Besides a republican elephant
A dollar sign, like the one that was crossed out. That's a frequently used "anarcho"-capitalist image.
The dollar sign is part of right wing indoctrination?
What? A dollar sign is used by pro-capitalists as a political symbol. I didn't mention "indoctrination."
I thought we were debating whether or not the school in question was indoctrinating kids with left-wing ideology since the children deigned to throw up the hammer & sickle, and "Capitalism will fail". You then turned it around, by saying it wouldn't be so offensive to so many, if it right wing in nature to which you have supplied the dollar sign as being symbolic of right wing political ideology.

Forget the dollar sign. What about a cross and biblical passage? Or "Global Warming is a lie" with a sun next to it?
