Just how offensive was South Park's "The F Word" episode this week? Well, they used the "fag" word a lot, which means it's offensive enough for GLAAD to get upset about it!

Rather than directing their attention to next week's Gossip Girl finale with a three-way (if it's two girls and one guy, is The CW discriminating against men? Tell us, GLAAD!), the organization has issued one of its "Call to Action" alerts over the Comedy Central program. You see, the four main characters in South Park used the word "fag" (and "****in' fag") all throughout. Except they weren't even talking about gays!

Instead, as you can tell from the very first scene of the episode (watch it here), they use "fag" to refer to guys who "ride a loud Harley up and down the streets ruining everyone’s nice time." So what's GLAAD upset about?

South Park is ruining the F-word!

For those that didn't see the episode you can always check it out at South Park Studios.

Essentially, the kids started getting annoyed by loud obnoxious harley bikers continually ruining their ability to play outside with their loud bikes, and started calling them fags. This continued for some time till they finally wrote "Get out Fags" on a building, upon which two of the local homosexuals saw and got offended.

When confronted the boys openly admitted they wrote "get out fags" wanting "those ****ing fags gone, everyone does". When asked why they hated homosexual they responded with a scornful "ooooo" telling the mayor that she shouldn't use fag like that towards gay people.

They point out through the episode that Fag has been defined as various things throughout the ages, and even been a slur used before (first for women, then for old people, then for gays, and now in south parks world...for obnoxious harley bikers). The boys end up getting it officially changed in south park to reference bikers, and go on to get it changed in the dictionary (complete with a Emmanuel Lewis as the chief editor).

The culimating line delivered by Stan explaining that when you're at an intersection and a guy cuts in front of you to grab the yellow light leaving you with a red and you say the F-word, "You're not thinking, 'Oh, he's a homosexual." You're thinking, 'Oh, he's an inconsiderate douchebag like a Harley rider.'"

Naturally, the harley riders were not happy with the extreme use of "Fag" to reference them. Apparently, neither was GLAAD.

So was GLAAD wrong for getting very offended by South Park's satire here? Was South Park right in trying to show for many of the younger generation "homosexual" isn't what comes to mind when using the word as a random attack on someone? Was their point off topic but still worthless to get upset about because its South Park and they attack EVERYTHING (right, nigger-guy)?

People who whine about being offended all the time need to be shot.

If you get offended by southpark, southpark just wins

Sheeesh this thread is just to gay.

Well you cant judge comedy or satire by the reaction of the most stupid members of the audience or we wouldnt have any.

how dare you.

i can't see what you posted......

Oh it is an image of a cat putting his paw in another cats face and then it says talk to the hand;)

It doesn't surprise me that they're offended. I don't expect the producers of South Park to care though, it's one of the things I love about that show, they'll insult or offend anyone and everyone and they don't apologize for it.

But on the other hand, isn't it possible to offended at all? Is nothing offensive any more?

I think the episode depicting the WWF fight to the death between Jesus and Satan was better.

Well, *I* don't get offended at much. But the point is, if and when I happen to, I don't get all pissy about it and act like someone has violated my non-existent right to NOT be offended. I just avoid whatever it is that I happen to allow to offend me.

Not offensive at all. Its a word, and words only have offensive meaning when the listener allows them to.

I want to point out that GLAAD, and all similar organizations, do not represent the entire gay community. As a matter of fact I am a bartender at a gay bar where I meet many, many gay people, and never have I met someone who is a member of these groups. The subject has never come up in nine years of bartending, and 20+ years of being in the community (in most regions of the country), so people do not seem to care about them in general. I mostly meet people who work in local gay community organizations, but they focus on assistance to gay people, not crying about simple things like words.

This, a million times over.

Just because something offends you doesn't mean it shouldn't exist.

If more Americans realized this we'd be a lot better off.

Also to point out though, Faggot is offensive when directed at a homosexual male. If you don't believe me, try this: walk into the middle of a gay bar, find the biggest guy you can, and say "hi, faggot". Let me know how many teeth you have left afterwards

I rarely meet a gay person who is offended by the word "faggot". Most just laugh it off and leave it be.

It depends on the context. I have a good friend that's gay, and I'll call him a silly fag. I'll also call my black friend a nigger. It's context, and it's ok because we're friends. If they weren't my friends it'd be different.

Besides, it's possible that most gay people just have thicked skinned. Do you really think that it's not an insult thought?

I would say that the speaker may mean it as insulting but the listener does not have to accept that. When I have been called a "faggot" in a derogatory manner, I consider it more a reflection on the speaker. It really goes no further than that.

I thought the whole point of South park was to make fun of everyone, and provide insight in the process. Their comedy is genius. Or at least it used to be. Haven't watched it in a while.

I don't like the word fag because of its historical origins.
