This story is somewhat interesting. Could the cold war be making a comeback?

Canadian jets scrambled to intercept Russian bomber before Obama visit

Canadian fighter jets were scrambled to intercept a Russian plane approaching Canadian airspace shortly before U.S. President Barack Obama visited Ottawa, the defence minister said Friday.

Peter MacKay said he wasn't accusing Russia of deliberately timing the flight to coincide with the visit — when Canadian security was focused in Ottawa — but he did call it a "strong coincidence."

"It was a strong coincidence which we met with … CF-18 fighter planes and world-class pilots that know their business," said MacKay.

"[The pilots] sent a strong signal they should back off and stay out of our airspace."

MacKay confirmed the incident at a news conference Friday in Ottawa with the chief of the defence staff and the commander of NORAD.

The CF-18s took off from Cold Lake, Alta., on Feb. 16 after NORAD detected the bomber headed for Canadian airspace. The aircraft never did enter North American airspace.

Obama arrived in Ottawa on Feb. 19 to meet with Prime Minister Stephen Harper. He spent six hours in the nation's capital.

Russian aircraft regularly probed into North American airspace during the Cold War and Canadian and American fighters routinely tracked the snoopers and escorted them back into international air space.

Such flights were suspended for years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, but resumed in recent years as Russia pushed its claim on the Arctic and oil wealth allowed the country to spend more on its military.

MacKay said Canada has seen "increased activity" in recent years.

I believe Russia wants there to be another cold war, but I don't see Obama, who I believe will prove to be a pacifist, will engage them in any way. It is interesting though that they would even try this. Hats off to the Canadian military for responding - threat or no.

It a kind of a tradition for Russians and Canadians to wave to each other and take pictures.

I bet it was really Palin that scared them away not the Canadian AF:2razz:

Canadian fighter jets

When did you guys get a second one?

Actually America's Hat has a considerable amount of air assets, including almost 12 full squadrons of F-18s.

As much as the Royal Canadian military gets laughed at Exhibit A it does have significant assets that really shouldn't get the crap that they do.

Shhhh....pay no attention to what Russia has been doing since the mid 90s in there former Bloc nations. And pay no attention to Russia's obvious quest to pretend to power again. Russia is "Europe's new friend."

I would have never seen this unless this was posted here:

This is absolutely ridiculous. If Russia want's the Dark Age again then hit our President. я гораваю русске (yazeek, don't feel liek putting it in the right language) I speak Russian. IF you want to **** with my country then prepare for the most domination you've ever recieved.
I hope there is retribution. Even the thought of losing my President to a FOREIGN power scares me.
I will submit to the tyranny of a DC ruler, more than submitting to the destruction of my home-grown tyrant.

No. Nope. Net. It is ''If This Was War, You wouldn't see me" hand gesture.

Not quite. The fact that the fighter gets close enough for the bomber to realize they are there during peacetime and waves is exactly what I said it was. If this was war, you'd be dead. And strategic bombing in interstate warfare doesn't utilize the type of bombers that Russia has.

Please understand modern strategic bombing and intercept theory before posting in the future. :rofl

It has a name: Canada. Just thought I'd let you know as it will take you fewer key strokes to type next time. We're not your "hat", we're your ally.

:2wave:
