Can Cultural Responsive Teaching improve student outcomes?

"But it’s not critical race theory, the academic concept conservatives have attacked in recent years, that officials say is missing. It’s culturally responsive teaching. This kind of instruction incorporates students’ cultural experiences, languages and identities into the learning process. Using students’ cultures can make lessons more relevant and engaging, education researchers have found. The term was first coined by multicultural education researcher Geneva Gay in 2000.

...Rounds learned through professional development programs that curriculum is often unrelatable to students of color. After getting to know her students more at KIPP, where 97% are Black, she infused culture in her lessons. Learning became more fun, she said, and students more engaged.

“When you bring culture into the classroom it lets students know, regardless of their background, that their culture is valued,” said Rounds.

...The science of reading and culturally responsive teaching work well together, according to Harvard University. Students are more likely to develop sustainable reading skills “when classrooms are student-centered, inclusive, and culturally responsive, when the curriculum is rigorous and intellectually challenging, and when educators have high expectations.”

The National Equity Project, an education reform organization, reported that creating a culturally responsive classroom includes teachers knowing their students well, building on students’ life experiences and creating a classroom learning community.

“Encourage students to care for one another and be responsible for each other inside and outside of the classroom,” the organization’s website stated."

It looks like it serves to encourage reading and learning and respect for one another. Two very important aspects of education.

What, exactly, is “black culture”?

What, exactly, is “black culture”?
It use to be very centered around family and religion.
That was, until white liberal social policies of the 1960s and on - decimated the race by building a system of dependency and actually monetarily rewarding them if they did not marry. The result was a decimation of the family unit, generational dependency on government handouts and failing in every measurable way in comparison to every other race.
Then the Dems convinced them that all of this is due to racism by evil white conservatives.

And there you go again.
I gave stats, percentages and facts.
You call that "idealistic"
It is the only way you can attempt to argue against the fact the Democrats both destroyed the black race in America - and are continuing to keep them down.
You have no argument.

This doesn't even make sense. Democratic policies have led to laws that affirm equal civil rights, protected the right to vote, and affirmed fair housing policy. It has also supported policies that serve to racially integrate schools and businesses as well.

Good post. I came into the thread with a very skeptical view.

Really ridiculous post.

Can Cultural Responsive Teaching improve student outcomes?

No.

Blacks would probably be surprised to learn they don't care about family, but would feel secure in the knowledge it's coming from someone who has no clue about them and has no interesting in learning about them.

Want to change student outcomes?

Work off an individualized education plan for each student.

Benchmark each student and set annual goals for that specific student and then measure achievement towards those goals every marking period.

Every student. Every marking period.

Hire more teachers and more staff to achieve this.

Stop expecting that students can learn effectively with 20 kids in a classroom and a single teacher trying to keep 20 different students on track and achieving.

It’s a dumb concept to start with. Why we continue to do things that way makes no sense.

How do you feel about making kids more engaged in learning and reading?
This wouldn't do that. Another stupid idea from leftist losers. Just teach the subjects, don't waste time trying to coddle certain students. This would be disruptive for the majority of kids, especially those who are there to actually learn.

How is that working out?

The article shows otherwise.
No, it doesn't.

What does this mean, exactly? And how would it be achieved? Be specific.

incorporates students’ cultural experiences, languages and identities into the learning process

OK, but the example cited of teaching about the letter “Y” had nothing to do with race or culture.

"Learning became more fun, she said, and students more engaged.

How is what working out? This isn't currently being done. Modern educators are overly focused on woke nonsense. We've all seen the purple haired freaks bragging about their grooming efforts all over TikTok.

That’s simply common sense and good teaching technique regardless of a student’s ‘culture’. Perhaps, the most important part is having high expectations.

Include a variety of voices, reflecting different points of view and experiences in the study of literature and history.

When was it a success?
