I came across an argument a while ago claiming that the only was to combat the wealth inequality, racist government, and tribalism mentality was through revolution. I dont at all agree with this statement. I think that the majority of people just need motivation to make a difference in their community. Im curios to hear your thoughts; Can a normal person become a mayor, a senator, or even president. Is the system going to stay the same and be run by the wealthy and company endorsed? or is this just a way to excuse the lack of action being taken by people who complain?

Most “normal” people lack the ability to become full-time campaigners or to convince those with loads of campaign cash to support them.

IMO, Obama and Clinton were "normal persons."

I think Jimmy Carter may be the closest we've ever had...

I think a normal person could be President.

Most people won’t vote for a Normal person.

Could a normal person trick the voters? Yes! Voters are susceptible.

First, we could get everyone to vote for themselves. To get the vote margins down to acceptable levels. Every human has the skill to lead.....

Great question!! Thank you

Well, the only two qualifications for the job are being at least 35 years old and being a natural born US citizen, so lots of people qualify.

Outwardly, it takes a force of will, and a certain amount of hubris. Being a well known person, because of other accomplishments, schooling, military training and leadership, former public office, don't hurt your chances either.

Not having a bunch of skeletons to keep buried doesn't hurt. The ability to make good public speeches, and how likable of a person you are.

But none of that is a hard fast rule, sometimes you just need to be the right person, in the right place, at the right time to catch lighting in a bottle.

It is said that we all get our 15 minutes of fame, but can you, and will you, seize on the opportunity to use that to propel yourself to public service, and will fortune smile on you.

There were some Presidents that were clearly bred for the job, like JFK, but it still required a great deal of just pure luck, not getting killed in war, and being the right person at the right time for the job.

In no small part, does it take ambition, if you are just going to fold the first time things get hard, or even the 10th or 20th time, you are not going to make it.

Being a former criminal won't help you, but it's not something that can't be overcome by ambition and force of will.

Being high born doesn't hurt, but there have been plenty that were not.

Mainly, it's not an opportunity that's just going to fall in your lap, force of will, ambition, and determination, with no small part of luck.

no way we'd ever have some normal, hard working guy from Scranton reach the White House.

I don't know about a "normal" person. I don't think your "average" person can. I am not necessarily referring to above average or below average. IMO either above or below would have a more realistic shot at making it to the WH than your average person.

Anyone who actually wants the job should be summarily disqualified.

Biden is, without a doubt! Ditto, the Obama's. Clinton's, I dunno' - they always struck me as a bit cut-throat & sleazy.

No you need money and tons of money, either yourself, or you need wealthy people to like you. That's how the system works.

I doubt a normal person would want to be President.

Or the humongous ego/sociopathy.

I do not believe you need to be an intellectual superstar to be an effective President. I do think you need to be of temperament that allows you admit that you don’t know everything and are willing to actually listen to people who know what they’re talking about.

Lots of people fit that description. The hard part is convincing people to give you money needed to actually run and having the wherwithal to campaign nonstop and not have a life.

Can’t please everyone.....

Carter should have never been president. He had no clue on the economy and left us with double digit interest rates, double digit inflation, and double digit unemployment. However the last straw was how pathetically he handled the embassy hostage issue in Iran.

Is the question can a normal person become president, or can a normal person be president? I would say presidents are usually very extraordinary people, but I'm sure many of them at one point in their lives were relatively normal.

Imagine, how hard those before us, had to work to achieve things. Did those economic disparities continue into the next presidency?

I heard the year 1848 started a great time in history.....

Or 2000’s

Yup! Jimmy was not involved in any of those, great economic accomplishments.
