The Marine Corps' top general says one "negative factor" delaying repairs is the diversion of resources to the military mission at the U.S.-Mexico border.

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — More than six months after Hurricane Florence ravaged North Carolina, hundreds of buildings at Camp Lejeune and two other nearby Marine Corps installations remain frozen in time, with walls still caved in and roofs missing.

The Marines say they need $3.6 billion to repair the damage to more than 900 buildings at Camp Lejeune, Marine Corps Air Station New River, and Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point caused by the storm and catastrophic flooding in its aftermath. And while they have torn down soggy, moldy walls, put tarps on roofs and moved Marines into trailers, so far they have not received a penny from the federal government to fix the damage.

I believe it was neller who said it was cost prohibitive to repair old buildings and wanted them replaced. I generally call bs on that since I had to deal with an air force base that was a former army and national guard base that the majority was built in ww2. those buildings were just fine to repair instead of replace, this seems like some cash grab since trump said he would rebuild the military and generals tripling and quadrupling numbers thinking trumps admin will write them a blank check for anything.


If the govt really wanted they could call in navy seebeees and air force construction and call it training to avoid contractor costs, but I doubt those branches would accept repairs that they did not get a blank check for and instead was controlled outside their budget authority.

There's a drop zone with an air control tower and dirt roads. One jump there I landed on a hard packed dirt road. I was carrying a saw and a radio and I damn near knocked myself out. I think I was out for a minute. They need to spend some of that money softening up those ****ing roads.

We certainly dare not ever have Marines staying in trailers or tents - or there being any delay from the Federal government showing up with money - when they are in a combat situation. In WW1, WW2, and for most in Korea and Vietnam they would have LOVED to spend their nights in a FEMA mobile home/trailer.

However, I agree that what the Democrats in Congress are doing is horrific.
