CA Senator Anthony Portantino's SB 1160 will require gun owners to register their firearms with the California DoJ each year. Gun owners found with an unregistered firearm would be subject to a $1,000 fine.

"SB 1160 will give the state better data and help us understand how many firearms are in private hands and who owns them. Currently, we only have rough estimates on how many firearms are in California. This important step toward registration will also increase accountability and responsible gun ownership as we collectively endeavor to increase public safety.", said Sen. Portantino.

California is in a dire situation. We have incompetent leadership in Sacramento, and hundreds of billions of dollars in annual deficit spending. Millions of Californians have fled to other states with better leadership and lower taxes, so the California Tax Base is dwindling at an alarming rate. The lawmakers are pressed to raise taxes, but Californians are already over-taxed, and higher taxes will only cause MORE people to flee, causing the Tax Base to dwindle even MORE.

It's a vicious cycle (and unsustainable, obviously).

SB 1160 is designed to add money to State coffers, but SB 1160 DOA. It's a nonstarter. It's a blatant infringement on the Right to keep and bear arms, and the Courts will shoot it down before a single penny is paid in registration fees. (pun intended)

Oh no!

Responsibility is required to have a deadly weapon that kills thousands every year!

I would say just don't register it it sounds like it's only punitive if you do.

Unless they repeal of Fourth amendment and they're not going to find a gun on you that isn't registered.

Speaking of which why don't you have to have a registration for your fourth amendment or First amendment or fifth amendment rights.

All of these amendments cause way more conflict for a law enforcement officer doing their job and your second amendment rights.

No this is just too fine and punish people who don't agree with the government ethos of California. The government that hosted a Chinese dictator who's in the process of doing a genocide as we speak.

So I think the constitution in the supreme Court are probably going to rule against California as they should

Not a good idea. California doesn't **** around when it comes to gun laws.

Sounds reasonable.

Not a good idea. California doesn't **** around when it comes to gun laws.
They're unenforceable without violating your fourth amendment are they going to know you have a gun?

Are they going to require you to register and pay a fee so you can enjoy your Fourth amendment rights too. Why don't they force you to register and pay a fee to keep them from housing soldiers in your home?

When you start making rights dated by how much money you can throw away and create a caste system. We're only the wealthy have rights but that's what California is that's why people who aren't wealthy are living in their cars there.

Not only should this be challenged in the supreme Court when California is cited as violating people's constitutional amendments forcing them to pay tribute to the state for the pleasure of having their rights at the constitution guaranteed to them not only should California be faced with criminal charges they should be forced to pay restitution to everyone they've abused

Unnecessary burdens on gun owners.
Unnecessary burden on gov't workers (which also includes unnecessary costs on taxpayers)

Will get shot down in court.

Guns are a major responsibility, and it is about time we treat them accordingly. I believe in heavy regulations on guns.

So is driving. What's a $1000 fine in CA when it comes to driving?

Masterfully crafted a fun control law that neither controls guns, has any chance of reducing gun violence, will have massive administrative costs, AND is likely to be shot down in court.

🤡

From the sound of it it's to collect $1,000 from each gun owner a year.

Wouldn’t it be absurd if you had to register a car every year? And pay a fee for it?

Next thing you know, they’ll make you get a license to use it and have to pass a test or something.

Frequently gun nuts want to compare the danger of firearms to the danger of automobiles--- why not embrace this registration concept as consistent with the equivalence argument?

Don’t have to do any of those things to own a vehicle, only to drive it on public roads.

Why don’t anti-gunners always default to the stupid car argument?

I don’t have to register my car to own it, just to drive it on public roads.

The proposed law is at least as reasonable as some of the laws passed in red states to assure that there's no cheating at the ballot box. Truly conservative.

Regards, stay safe 'n well.

How is it reasonable? Be specific.

There are MANY regs on driving and autos-------same should be with guns

There are many regs on guns and carrying them in public, and they are much stricter.

For example, if you carry a firearm in public in NJ without a nearly impossible to get license, you could go to prison for years, and lose your right to own firearms for life.

What's the penalty for driving without a license in NJ?

If CA thinks people are fleeing the state now, just wait until this thing passes. If so, millions will leave.

This bill should be called what it really is "Register your firearms, so that after we slowly deem them all illegal, we can confiscate them"
