SAN FRANCISCO, California -- The California Public Utilities Commission is set to vote next month on a proposal to tax text messages.

State regulators say the money would be used to support programs that provide phone service to the poor.

It's unclear how much you'd have to pay per message.

The wireless industry and business groups are fighting the plan.

There’s something in the water in California that enables legislators to envision taxes that would never cross the minds of other Americans.

How about a tax on … text messages? People send a lot of text messages, right? Let’s tax those!

I don't mind paying my fair share of taxes, I really don't.

It is however getting almost criminal the way we are taxed. Glad I don't live in CA anymore.

Per CNN and others, it wouldn't be per-text, it would be a monthly surcharge on all cell bills that include fees for text messages.

Couple thoughts: This will just encourage consumers to use apps instead of traditional text messages, so this idea seems pretty poorly thought out. Further, this is a quite a regressive tax. Not sure why a state full of progressives wants to regressively tax itself.

Since the proposed tax is to provide phone service to the poor. Will the "poor" be exempt from the tax if they text?

Besides I thought the "poor" all go the free "Obama phone"

So glad I don't live in CA.

Let's send a whole bunch of text messages to the legislators thinking it's a good idea.

Here in California, the Democratic tsunami is really feeling its oats.

1. The chief justice of the state supreme court loudly announced that she is no longer a Republican.

2. The Republicans in the legislature are so few that they are now totally ignored.

3. The proposed tax on texting is minor compared with all the new taxes the Democrats are passing to help the homeless, undocumented immigrants, schemes to discourage automobiles in favor of public transportation -- and bicycles!

4. Many people are laughing because President Trump will soon be out of the White House. They won't be laughing so loudly when the Democrats (President Biden and Vice President O'Rourke???) copy California's "progressive" example.

Can they put a tax on telephone calls via autodialer? Or those without identifying information? Please?
