CA Gov Newsom Asks Other Countries To Not Impose Tariffs On Goods From CA

Do you think that other countries would actually consider exempting California goods from Tariffs?

Earlier today, California governor Gavin Newsom distanced himself from Trump and asked other countries to exempt California goods from Tariffs.

During Trump I Governor Jerry Brown also distanced himself from policies coming from DC — even proposing that California send its own satellite into space (for weather ?) as a response to some inanity from the White House. I don’t remember MAGA pearl clutching then.

Given the state’s agricultural exports, Newsom should do his best to protect our economy.

Gavin Newsom is a joke. He has wrecked our state so badly, that for the first time in U.S. history, California's population is declining due to people fleeing the incompetent and idiotic leadership.

The mass exodus is unprecedented. Gavin Newsom is hands-down the most destructive and most incompetent governor in California's history. That pile of shit is even worse than Gray Davis, (who as you know was recalled in 2003).

The irony is that Gray Davis wasn't really that bad - he just wasn't very good. Newsom has proved how worthless he is in an executive role, and if the Californian electorate was smarter, we would have recalled his sorry ass when we had the opportunity. :)

That said, if some other country decides to make California exempt from their retaliatory tariffs, then that would probably be a feather in Newsom's cap.

I support it. (y)

Its also a good political move for Newsom imo.

I didn't answer the poll because I have no idea what other countries will do, or if Cali could even do this.

Rather than disliking Governor Newsom, your comments show that your problem is actually with California voters who elected him twice and failed to successfully recall him.

The Gropenator was a crap governor, and conservatives should really blame Republican Pete Wilson and his support for Proposition 187 for energizing the Latinos to become involved in California politics — and guaranteeing Democratic super majorities in both houses in Sacramento.

California's exports are half of Texas's. You can't ask to be exempt from tariffs when you don't actually produce anything.

Its a Hail Mary pass that does no harm whatsoever. I don't know what else blue states can do, so he's trying to distance himself and his state.
During our last tory government they couldnt get a trade deal with biden. So the useless Badenoch signed trade deals with several red states. So there is a precedent.
Having said that I dont think anything got traded.

Newsom can screw himself. The intention of tariffs is to punish America - all of it.

Canadian steel, aluminum and cars bound for California are tariffed at 25%. He can expect the same in kind.

What an idiot.

What if states can find a loophole or use the courts to allow them to stop tariffs? Seems like you should be supporting this. We all should.

But a smaller economy... not sure you are even correct about the exports, but it is probably just oil.

My favorite wine is was Robert Mondavi Vint 😔

A bigger winery ... there are some great wineries in the area... Glad you know of the Napa/Sonoma goodness!

We can get you some ... ;)

Fortunately Napa and Sonoma are a pleasant ~90 minute drive away
Stockton? I doubt you are Mendicino and you don't have to cross a bridge, that is not pleasant. So Central Valley.

California is the second biggest exporter in the US with New York in third. Texas is first due to oil. As of 2024.

So, while not as large as Texas, exports are more diverse an not based on almost one product like Texas; so California does produce things to export.

Forgot to mention also that California has the largest economy, with Texas at second place.

Side Note: Texas' GDP is almost solely derived from oil/energy...which I find ironic given that they can't maintain their own electrical grid.

Worth mentioning: states cannot make treaties, but a verbal plea can cause other nations to offer lower tariffs for specific states...which MAGA in Congress and Trump will not sign off on (and they have to) for one simple and pathetic reason: they won't get credit for it.

Higher than average unemployment and lower than average growth, California might need "special" treatment.
