There is no ‘context’ that excuses blatant racism or misogyny or plain old bigotry.
Kirk was a raging racist asshole and political opportunist. A friend of mine posted this, and I haven’t need able to get his OK to credit him for it, so he will remain nameless. But he says it very well and is spot on;
The only reason any of us know who Charlie Kirk is, is because of his often vile attacks on disenfranchised people, and his incitement to violence against those people. He was instrumental in perpetuating the falsehoods about Haitians eating neighborhood pets in Springfield, Ohio. This caused a community of completely legal immigrants to fear for their lives for a time. When Nancy Pelosi's husband was attacked in his home, Charlie Kirk called for an "amazing patriot" to bail the attacker out of jail. These were people that were not trying to make political points, they were all just trying to live their lives, and found their lives in danger so that someone could make a political point, and perhaps book more speaking engagements.
Charlie Kirk is not a politician; he was a professional provocateur. There is good money to be made inciting outrage. Like many professions, one must take the good with the bad. If some jobs were without risks, they wouldn't pay well. When you spend your professional career inciting violence, it is not unexpected that you will ultimately be the victim of violence. This doesn't justify the violence. Just like it was regrettable when Siegfried and Roy suffered a tiger attack, I would not say they deserved it but I will say that it was not unexpected after a career of working with tigers.
Over the coming weeks, everybody will struggle to try and reframe Charlie Kirk’s memory. He is not a martyr for the purpose of promoting our First Amendment rights. He is not a demon who deserved his fate. He was a Las Vegas lounge act gone terribly wrong.
