Trump's calculation -- he's gotten money & support from Adelson and other Israel-aligned wealthy donors in the past. Also, given his latest trade showdown with China has failed, he needs to change to a new script and change the headlines away from the TACO taunts. Middle East war provides a useful opportunity for doing this. The thing is, this war may get out of hand, with fires burning out of control.

Work toward a peaceful resolution? I don't even recall Israel and Iran holding serious talks. If so they should stuck with it.

I do remember there was a deal which the US abandoned under flimsy pretence: would that also be a factor in your Venezuela deflection? Theres also the fact we would not know they are "days away" from building nukes, as is the case with Iran even though we've been hearing it for years. There is also the matter of regional tensions and the threat to the global energy supply these would need to be similar in scale. We have to compare apples and apples here. Then of course the fact that Venezuela is a weak, economically flailing, borderline failed state.

As for unpleasant rhetoric, talk is cheap. Still verify before you strike.

And with everything else going on the leader of Israel has questionable motives. We would have to assume the US president at the time was similarly self-serving and faced similar political pressure, that might cause him to lash out irrationally.

Jesus I can't even get to the question before the whole premise falls apart.
