So ICE was basically doing a routine sweep outside this event as it has been doing on a regular basis since June. They arrested one illegal and no word on the operation. Liberals and conservatives allowed people to apply for asylum per US law and three ratified treaties, even as illegals were being deported. I repeat that I was on the border in 2018, where ICE was screening people into the US much as they are now. This while Trump was president. The only difference was Trump lying about and insulting them.

I repeat for the umteenth time that if you don’t like it, push to have US law changed and the treaties withdrawn from.

So you deny that US law gives people the right to apply for asylum, and that the US ratified the three relevant treaties that deal with refugee protection? Put that on your resume and apply for a job in the Trump administration, maybe reporting on job statistics.

What does applying for asylum have to do with immigrants illegally crossing the border and Biden letting millions lose into our country?

People crossing the border were screened by Biden’s ICE the same way they were screened by Trump’s ICE when I was in El Paso working with asylum seekers in 2018. ICE did us the courtesy of telling us how many they would be dropping off at our center. Why is it so hard to understand that under both Trump and Biden, people were let in to apply for asylum, and that under Trump and Biden people were denied entry if they didn’t ask for protection, and that under Trump and Biden illegals when apprehended were deported?

True, Trump did say, “why can’t we just send them back?” — suggesting violating the Refugee Act of 1980 and three ratified treaties that bind the US — but obviously he was disabused of this idea by his staff.

Attacking immigrants and refugees of all types is Trump’s thing, or hadn’t you noticed? The unsurprising exception has been White South Africans, whom he brought to the US recently, apparently unable to find any other refugees in the world - certainly no Black South Africans - who might need help, including the thousands from various countries that had already been extensively screened for resettlement when he came to office this past January. I can understand your supporting Trump for his other policies, but why do you support this horse shit?

What in the world are you assuming? Prior to the El Paso trip, I had worked for 20 years evaluating asylum claims, and helped train ICE (then INS) personnel. The US is required by US law and three Senate-ratified treaties to do the sort of thing I was helping do at the time. ICE itself was working with us. And what does Biden have to do with it? Trump was president when I was doing this.
