Bill has been filed in Texas to prohibit counties from putting a polling place at a college or university

"Education is the DEVIL!!!!"
-The Right

It has been a few decades since my kids went off to University, but I recall they kept my address as their voting address.
Small collage towns, while they love the money and good jobs, they do not like transient student residents, throwing elections.
In some of these towns the student population can outnumber the residents 2 to 1.
Sure, that happens - my permanent address was my parent's home until grad school, but some students leave home and do not have a residence other than the university. Several of my friends in college didn't have another home but the university. These people in general hated their parents and moved out, forever, but for others maybe 'home' was 1000 miles away and they just can't afford back and forth travel, so they moved their residence to where they were going to live for at least 4 years. Whatever - many reasons for an adult to move out of the house. Others might have a permanent residence in Knox County (e.g. with parents) and live on campus. Wherever they reside in Knox County they can vote early (not election day) at any precinct including one on campus. So many of my friends' kids go to UT but are Knox county residents and can vote early on campus, but for offices at their home address.

But, yeah, if Sue lives in Memphis and is still registered to vote in Memphis and goes to school in Knoxville, she can't vote in person at the Knox County voting place, which they do have on campus, for students resident in Knox county and the many teachers, staff, etc. that live and work in Knox county. It's convenient for all of them.

So the question is are there enough voters registered in Knox County on campus to justify a voting place on campus. For UTK I'm sure the answer is YES, because it will allow students, faculty, staff, and the nearby residents to all vote at that place. Banning an on campus voting place just makes no sense at any level. The Knox County voting folks just need to run the numbers and do what makes sense like all other voting locations in this county.

How do you know this?

And.....I am asking respectfully for a change. ;)
It's been reported in many areas of past elections, that specifically, black voters are registering in very low numbers. Especially in southern states. I read somewhere that in Louisiana, only some 15% of blacks voted. I am sure my numbers are not perfect. But if that number would go to 100%, it would change the entire political balance of that state. And they're not alone.

I am sure a google search will provide the information you are requesting.

If the university is their address of record then they should be allowed to vote there. If the student has their address of record someplace other than the university then that is the location they should vote in

Election month lasts too long and parking is a problem at many of those institutions.
OK and parking is often a problem all over downtown. So there shouldn't be voting places downtown? Obviously there should be, because most downtown will walk to the polls. It's not different on campus. My wife works on campus and walks everywhere.

You're offended that I mentioned truckers. You'll get over it.

Not offended at all Henry.

You are the one making a fool of yourself.

Many truckers are ex ...........doctors, Wall Street traders, librarians, teachers, dentists, military, police, civil servants, housewives, grand mothers, IT techs, geologists, ect. ect. ect.

It's the party of voter suppression.

I know the reason but I still have to ask.

WHY?
What is WRONG with voting stations at colleges and universities?
Young people vote there. Out of state students registered in TX vote there. Most likely...

People vote there and that is not what TX elected R's want.

I had not though of that, many campuses do not have free visitor parking,
which itself might be a 15th amendment violation.

The fools are the ones attempting to prohibit voting on college campuses. And I'd wager that those same fools would have no issue with turning Truck stops and gun stores into polling places.

I lived in a college town once and it's definitely a love / hate. The residents love that money/money.

And in some small college towns that's all there is is the college. And the small businesses struggle like hell when school is out.

Maybe..... For early voting in my county, you can vote at any precinct in the county. So faculty, staff, and students who are registered in Knox county can all vote on UTK's campus, which is in Knox county. And UTK has an early voting location on campus. On election DAY you have to vote in your assigned precinct.

Personally?

The bill is silly.

I do think that college students should meet normal residency requirements.

If that university student living in the dorm, it should be consider transitory housing and they should vote absentee to the permeant residence. You know colleges make students move out of the dorm during breaks right?

If they have moved off campus and have an appartment lease? No problem, register locally and have at it.

WW

Ah, let em vote in transitory housing. It's not very many, and in a national election, the winner affects their lives no matter what part of the state they live in later.

It does create an artificial economy, but in the long run having a University in you town is very good for the town.

We should make old people go on to campus and vote.

They do not want to pay for parking, and it would be illegal to charge them to park for an election.
They don't have to charge for parking on election day. They make tons of money on football day.
