SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- San Francisco’s surveillance cameras in high-crime areas do not prevent violent crime, according to a new study by researchers at the University of California.
Okay, good, a study to see how effect this system is.
The long-awaited study by the UC Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society found the program is hurt by lack of training and oversight, a failure to integrate footage with other police efforts, poor quality cameras, and what may be a fundamental weakness of cameras as anti-crime devices.
I bet it was expensive though...
Mayor Newsom began the program four years ago, but out of concern for people’s privacy, police are not allowed to monitor cameras in real time. Investigators must wait until a crime is reported before looking at footage.
Well, if you know that the poor cameras aren't being monitored, what damned good are they?

KCBS - Study Critical of San Francisco Surveillance Cameras

Although I disagreed with the cameras being installed in the first place, its good news that they have been recognized as a failure. Now its time to get rid of them and show this as a failed experiment. We need to insure we don't go down the same road as Britain in becoming a closed circuit television society.

next if they would please remove the cameras at stoplights, which cause more accidents than they prevent

Did Big Brother's job get outsourced?

The Ministry of Love, with their cameras, is only looking out for the best intrest of the Brits. Here in the US we need to get the cops out of the donut shops.... I had the experience of violent crime where the cops stayed away untill WELL after the shooting stoped. This is the equivalent of the comity reviewing films to reduce crime in areas of San Fran. Throw the cameras into the riseing waters (co2 bla bla bla) of the pacific and do real crime prevention.

They're going to be removing the cameras here in Washington. (At the stoplights)

Reason: They work too well. There are virtually no tickets for running a stop-light anymore, so the cameras aren't cost efficient.

that's very interesting that it has been so effective for you guys.
I know of a lot of really busy, giant intersections around here where the yellow is too short for the speed limit and you see people freaking out and slamming on the brakes all the time because of those cameras. I'm pretty sure fender benders at several lights have gotten much worse because of this.

They just installed those traffic cameras on top of traffic lights in my city. From what I hear, they're gonna watch them and see who runs red lights, and then send those people a ticket in the mail. I heard they've already been doing that for awhile in Houston.

I figure it would be in the city's best interest if someone were to... ah, I mean, if a rock were to fly out of nowhere and hit those cameras, and break them all.

You should check out the local laws on yellow lights. Several cities have, after installing red-light cams, been caught with illegally short yellow times in order to increase ticket revenue.

Yeah, around here there are no camera lights in areas with greater than 35 mph speed limits.

But it's silly to me that they would install them, have them work, and then get pissed off because they arent generating enough revenue from ticketing.

Then again, this is coming from the same area that tries to deny police quota's, then shows off their brand new Dodge Charger police cars (station pending) after they hit "record" ticketing and crime REPORTING (not prevention)
