Biden orders end of federally run private prisons

I've said it before and I'll say it again...
I'd gladly swap.
If it comes down to Jose y Maria who may have crossed illegally or overstayed their visas...if they have clean criminal records, I'd swap Jose y Maria in a hot second for the neo-confederates. Let them be guests of CCA instead. I'm sure the CEO's of those corporations couldn't care less as long the $$$ is coming in.
Jose y Maria are less likely to commit crimes than natural born Americans and I know for a fact neither of them were in Washington on the 6th.

Half my neighborhood. (Pico Rivera, CA)
They go to work every day, they work hard, they love their kids, they're friendly, and a good many of them fly the flag on July 4th.
True, they like to fly the Mexican flag too but I see their Stars and Stripes.

President Joe Biden on Tuesday ordered the Department of Justice to end its reliance on private prisons and acknowledge the central role government has played in implementing discriminatory housing policies.

In remarks before signing the order, Biden said the U.S. government needs to change “its whole approach” on the issue of racial equity. He added that the nation is less prosperous and secure because of the scourge of systemic racism.

“We must change now,” the president said. “I know it’s going to take time, but I know we can do it. And I firmly believe the nation is ready to change. But government has to change as well.”

Rent-a-prison has become a major industry. And others parasite off them, with things like charging lots of $$$ to use the telephone.
Hell yeah, Private prisons are bogus, these places need to keep full beds and they set up their rules in a way to insure inmates stay locked up long after a State or Federally run facility would have released the inmate.

Amen to that!

There are things that the government does better, this is one of them.

Of course but even if the govt DIDN'T do a better job, the solution is to MAKE them do a better job, because enlisting a profit business to take over is the worst idea imaginable for all the reasons we just went over above.
Yeah...government doing a poor job? Fix it.
Then you wind up with a better government that does a better job.
We can do this, yes?
It's not like we're inventing the wheel.

Now, we just need to make public office not for profit.;)
I say put them in the same kind of barracks our military sleeps in and feed them the same food as the military and pay them a minimum wage. Let's see how many really want to be a public servant when the line to the money store dries up.

That is where the "buck privates" go, once you demonstrate you're worthy of promotion, you wind up where the officers are, yes?

They appear to be cheaper than building & operating your own for states & the Feds.

No they're not. What could be more expensive than having justice, the foundation of democracy, corrupted by greed? I realize, though, that greed is the first commandment of fascist traitors, so your statement is not surprising. The Republican party has become a religion and the God they serve is Mammon.

That’s the problem.
I used to investigate and report on prisons where asylum seekers were held. Private prisons were a problem for them, and I presume other prisoners as well. Prisoners (and I) had trouble at times finding out who set which rules, whom to appeal to, etc. This in addition to the already mentioned incentive for such industries to lobby for more or harsher prison sentences.

My favorite instance, going back 30+ years, unbelievably, was finding that one high-level official in one corporation had a Nazi background. Even as I write this, it’s hard to believe.

They somehow manage to cut costs enough to make a profit, which begs the question which costs and how. We still share the liability from countless federal lawsuits, class action or otherwise, but none of the first hand control over resources, staffing and policy to protect ourselves and police what goes on.

To be blunt, this is in the top ten dumbest cost containment moves I have seen. We want built- in incentives towards safety, rehabilitation, education, and quality while we get an agent that is searching for nickel and dime methods to gauge both inmates and tax-payers more guaranteed clientele, and longer 'border' stays.

Every microbe is a mountain to progressives. Less than 10% of federal inmates are incarcerated in private facilities. This isn’t a major issue.

Good... then there will be no problem in doing this.

Also... this isn't really a left/right issue.

This is a right/wrong issue.

Prisons shouldn't be for profit.

They should be if the government doesn’t want to build, operate, and maintain the facilities necessary to house those criminals. Nobody is going to do that free of cost.

The two largest private prison companies in the US - CoreCivic and GEO Group - were major contributors to the Trump 2016 campaign.

They keep their BOP facilities full by filing disciplinary charges against prisoners, and elevate profits by skimping on meals, healthcare, etc.

Unfortunately, the Biden EO will not affect CoreCivic and GEO Group immigration detention facilities which operate via contracts with the DHS.

Good move, Joe.

Why even make the argument that a government failing to house the people that it incarcerates is not a deriliction of it's basic duty?

Because it isn’t especially considering that the conditions in prisons today far and away exceed basic duty. Key Founders such as Benjamin Franklin designed our first prisons and what is on offer today is the epitome of luxury by comparison.

I think this is the correct decision . Prisons for profit pollutes the justice system. Imagine if the courts were profit centered.

Because it isn’t especially considering that the conditions in prisons today far and away exceed basic duty.

What is excessive? How does that excess drive for profit prisons?

They are. That’s what court fees and bail are for.

No, that's not what 'profit centered' means.

The government collects taxes, charges all sorts of fees, but is not 'profit centered'.

For a court to be profit centered, it would have to be privatized, judges working for a corporation, and ALL services are charged, judges rented, etc etc., either billing the government, or charging the public.

I hope Joe closes down all the prisons (RACIST!) and releases them into the streets like the mentally ill in Californiapocalypse.

Freedumbs!

It doesn’t necessarily have to be privatized. The justice system is funded by the State but if you or I want access to it we still have to pay for that access out of pocket and if you don’t want to languish in jail pending a trial then you have to remit extortion money in the form of bail.
