Biden wants to raise the minimum wage to 15 dollars per hour. He said "There should be a national minimum wage of $15 an hour..Nobody working 40 hours a week should be living below the poverty line.”

Do you agree with him? The 15 dollar per hour minimum wage has already passed the House. Mitch McConnell and the GOP blocked a floor vote in the Senate. Biden considers anybody making below 15 dollars per hour as "living in poverty".

I agree with our future President Joe Biden, it's 2021 and $15 an hours is not unreasonable at all. A worker must pay rent, pay utilities, buy insurance, send their kids to school, buy clothing, etc. With skyrocketing prices these days, even at $15 an hours, you'd have to live alone to survive.

Slow joe just came up with this epiphany after 47 years in DC?

This is the usual stupid shit we all expect from the left.

It doesn't matter at all how many hours a person works. What matters is what is the value of their work. And the fact is, the value of the work some people do is VERY low...hence, they earn a low wage.

I agree that it should be done, but its a nonstarter unless the dems have 60 people in the senate.

I'm nit against a higher minimum wage.

But it should vary based on cost of living.

$15/hour is a lot in some places and not enough in others.

I would tie it to cost of housing. That's our biggest monthly expense. And the thing that varies the most from places to place.

15 bucks an hour will result in an effective pay cut for everyone who is earning a more than that and who isn't already rich. send the kids to college or job training without debt and tie the current minimum wage to inflation so that it doesn't require an act of congress to raise it every time. also, eliminate that $2.13 bullshit exception for tipped workers.

i like this plan more.

And when the poverty line rises to compensate for the the increased cost, what then? I can only guess...

No, I don't agree.

Raising wages by mandate simply results in a counter-reaction by employers. As has been proven in those States which passed a $15.00 minimum wage, prices for goods and services go up to cover the new expenses. Meanwhile employers reduce staff, reduce hours from full-time to part-time, or use a combination of both to balance the equation.

This also helps create inflation, especially when combined with the central government printing more money, as it has been doing, to cover increased government spending.

Retirees will suffer the most, as they must either take part-time work (or even full-time work if they can get it) as their pensions will no longer suffice and they become the new "poor."

So people make more, but the cost of living goes up too...and with it the poverty line moves up to fit the new situation.

You are paying to make up for the low wage through subsidies to the poor. If you want to stop doing that make employers pay decent wages.

And why should the employer's business bear the brunt of that cost, possibly suffer or worse...fold?

As far as "paying to make up for the low wage", I would prefer the government spend money enabling people to raise the value of their work instead of giving them a subsidy.

This will do a few things. Cause more unemployment from small business owners. Cause pricing resets to the poverty level to absorb the increase in revenues. Adversely impact senio citizens on fixed incomes. And trap people working in low skilled service jobs...the lifeblood of the democrat employment strategy. But it wont help anyone.

So that the public purse doesn't have to subsidize the employer's employees.

A disaster in the making.

Even if COVID were to disappear overnight and all small businesses re-opened, it would be at least a year...maybe more...before they saw signs of recovering. A $15/an hour MW would be the LAST THING they need to deal with.

Bad idea Joey. Very bad idea.

So you think all workers should get a % of the profits that are made by a company? That is the "value of their work".

Yes paying their workers a decent wage is always the LAST thing on their minds.

Anyone that believes that a $15.00 minimum wage is going to solve anything is out of their mind.

The rent is going up right along with the wages no matter where you live.

I agree with the sentiment "Nobody working 40 hours a week should be living below the poverty line" but the cynic in me doesn't believe that increasing the minimum wage alone will have the desired result. It will likely have a negative impact.

If we want to establish the standard of "no one working 40 hours a week should be below the poverty line", then there are much better ways to do that than raising the minimum wage and screwing over generations of our poorest workers.

Agree with Biden on this. I'll pay more for stuff so the person providing the good or service can live off the wage.

I as well but this should not be.
That the increase does not come out of the non working investor class profit is immoral.

So you don't care about small businesses? If they go under, their workers can kiss ANY MW bye bye.

Well, at the very least, even if they do wind up at or below the poverty line, they should still be able to have a roof, food, access to healthcare and a shot at getting either trade training or some other higher education.
Sure the food may not be much other than the basics, the housing might not be much to crow about, but there's still something very empowering about knowing you can manage the basics, it builds confidence and ensures stability.

Poverty is SUPPOSED to suck.
The suck is the prime motivator and if there is adequate upward mobility, ambition takes care of the problem, ambition and determination.

But poverty is supposed to be something almost everyone can transcend. If the bottom class has enough churn, people lift themselves up out of poverty at a rate sufficient to stimulate the economy.
