Bars become new flashpoint in COVID-19 fight | TheHill

Public health experts and some Trump administration officials are pressuring reluctant governors to close down bars as their states suffer new surges of COVID-19.

Bars are seen as one of the largest sources spreading the virus in states, given that they tend to crowd people together indoors, speaking at loud volumes without masks for extended periods of time.

Some hard-hit states, including Florida and Arizona, have taken action to close them, but many others have not, even as outbreaks worsen and the country sets new daily records.

I don't hang out in bars but I made sure to stock up before the state closed down everything.

Bars are one of the most dangerous places to be right now. They're designed for anything but social distancing, and you can't wear your mask while drinking.

And before our resident COVID deniers come in and make this the latest danger to downplay, my right to live exceeds their right to do whatever they want. :)

How is your right to live impacted by what folks who go to bars do anymore than what folks out protesting do? Those who do not practice 'social distancing' are not limited to bar patrons. Your very selective outrage says loads about who you feel are "COVID deniers".

The evidence that going to bars is much more dangerous now than going to protests where most people are masked is overwhelming. Google is your friend.

Get offended all you want at the facts, it doesn't change the facts. Bars are one of the most dangerous places for the spread of the coronavirus. Do you agree with this fact, or do you want your state to remain one of the worst for the spreading right now?

I never disagreed with that fact, yet even you noted that "bars are one of the most dangerous places".

Oh look, it's the "I'm not going to own up to what I said earlier" and the "I'm going to twist your words to imply something you never said" games rolled into one.

You were the one who falsely accused me of "selective outrage" about the need to close down bars when that was precisely the topic of the OP. ;)

Theres no mandates that I am aware of that requires you to frequent bars.

drink at home, FFS.

Somehow being in a large screaming protest mob did not make that list (so I guess being in a sports stadium is closest). ;

You do realize that literally no one is saying that protests were safe or had zero transmission, right?

Seriously... this is getting old. The virus does not give a rats ass about politics. Stop politicizing everything. The level of transmission in the protests isn't political. It's a data point. It's a data point that's been confirmed in independent contact tracing all over the united states. If you can't separate a data point from your own political biases then you have no business pretending to have a rational opinion.

Here's what we know:
  • Protests -> Large Crowds, Outdoors, Largely Mobile, Majority wearing masks, warm air, predominately during the day led to relatively few transmissions.
  • Bars -> Small crowds, indoors, stationary, minimal mask wearing, cool air, predominately at night has led to massive transmission.

It does not matter why the protests were gathered. It does not matter who was at the bars. For those who can think rationally, this is telling us something important. Super spreader events are the single most effective way that the virus is transmitted. We have no idea why someone becomes a super spreader, and we have no idea how to determine who is at risk, but we know what a super spreader generally looks like. A super-spreader is usually young and asymptomatic. They don't seem to be super spreaders for very long. In some cases it might only be a few hours. But if a super spreader is in an indoor (or sheltered) environment with poor air circulation, lots of talking, shouting, singing etc.. then they can infect essentially everyone in the room. For example a single person in a single night caused 187 infections at Harper’s Restaurant and Brew Pub in Michigan. That's one person going to one bar and in one night infecting 187 people... In contrast Typhoid Mary only infected 53 people over the course of her life and she was banished to live by herself on an island. Italy's ground zero might have a football match played in San Siro Stadium.

Stopping super spreader events alone might be enough to get Ro below 1.0. So figuring out how they happen and WHERE THEY DO NOT is important. If we don't seem to have any super spreader events at protests, then it means that there was something different about protests which prevented it from occurring. It does not mean that everyone is lying to push a political viewpoint which you disagree with. If you can figure out what prevented super spreader events during protests then you can go a long way toward figuring out how to contain the virus with minimal economic impact.

I'm shocked that bars were allowed to be opened and still are anywhere at this time. Drinking leads to losing your inhibitions and awareness. People touch more things. Drinking makes you have to go to the restroom more often which in a bar is probably not the most sanitary place. There are so many strikes against bars right now. If they want to stay in business they better start looking into outdoor options with plenty of restroom facilities that are constantly being cleaned and sanitized.

As usual you didn't read what was said to you. Let me help you:

**** bars until this pandemic is gone. Human life is more important. Surely, as a pro-lifer, you would agree with this. ;)

Bars do not infringe upon your right to live no matter how hard you try to spin it

The lifesaving measures to keep people away from bars, which are excellent places for spreading the virus, exist despite your ignorance on this matter. :)
