The whole situation around tariffs is confusing, especially if you’re eagerly anticipating the iPhone 17 and want to know if the price is going to change. Well, following some changes over the weekend, it seems the whole mess is getting even more confusing.

Despite an announcement that various electronics, including smartphones, would be exempt from the 125% reciprocal tariff imposed against Chinese goods last week, the White House has confirmed this is only temporary. So rather than saving the iPhone 17 (and us) from price hikes, it seems like this change will only be valid “for a month or two”.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, the same man that defended tariffing an island inhabited solely by penguins, confirmed this in an interview with ABC News.

Pharmaceutical products will also be hit by a new, similar tariff.
All these new tariffs will be coming in the next couple of months and “are not available to be negotiated away by countries”. Which is just fan-flipping-tastic.

Here's trump now talking about suspending car parts tariffs. This is how this shit administration moves. Enact blanket stupidity and then start pulling back pieces and parts as they finally realize how things actually work. It's how they do tariffs and how they've ran doge.

Just got 16 Pros for all four of us, and Verizon owns our asses for at least two years. I might get an iPhone 19 when it comes out.

Apple's market cap is higher than Canada's GDP so they can afford to accelerate their move to India, who is far more eager to make a trade deal with Trump than China.

No, there really isn't any multi-dimensional chess going on. I think they have vague goals, but they really don't understand how trade works. They have some really rich people in their administration, but Americans are going to find out the hard way that being really rich doesn't mean you understand economics, and in some cases, it doesn't even mean you understand how finance and micro works, either. Some people are just really good at raising capital and investing it for themselves, which is different than running a successful enterprise.

Most of these people have no ****ing clue what they're doing. They foolishly believe that they can use our national resources and our dollars as leverage to force the entire world to shift away from China and back to the United States, which is insane, cartoonish thinking.

Tl/dr: They just started a trade war without a lot of thought behind it with an adversary that's been preparing for a trade war for at least a good 5 years, if not longer. This doesn't end well -- for us anyway.

I agree with most of your post except that there is multi dimensional chess going on with so many irons in the fire, flooding the zone. All the while he’s not accomplishing anything but chaos and he’s in charge of conducting it to satisfy his changing daily whims. The chaos in the stock market, the Ukraine, immigration, lack of a coherent foreign policy, surrounding himself with dumber than dirt sycophants.

I agree that the idea coming into this term was to stun the opposition with the speed of their transition -- that's apparent. Project 2025, the dozens of EOs, DOGE, etc...yes, that part is, as you say, shocking the enemy Von Clausewitz style.

We use an androit tracphone and pay about $100/year.
We use Verizon Visible for our internet needs. That's, for us, $360 per year.
