Back to Afghanistan?

Well, Russia's flying drones into Poland and violating Estonian air space now. Apparently Trump's neither a deterrent to Russian aggression nor good enough a friend of Putin to get a peace deal signed.
More Sanctions again coming up..other then more of the same that don't work -what would you have Trump do? He is enlarging the US presense both now and post war. Following in Biden's footsteps...wunderbar

Atretched by Afghanistan and Venezuela? I doubt that. A couple of aircraft carriers could keep venezuela tied up, and long range bombers could do the same to Afghanistan. Venezuela has maybe a few dozen fighter aircraft while a single carrier has 65 or so. The bigger challenge is Afghanistan because the nearest airbases are in Qatar and UAE. That's doable but the distance makes it tougher.

When did you wake up from that twenty-year nap, Rip Van Winkle?

We spent years in Afghanistan but couldn't prevail in that country.

Trump could make it very, very clear that the USA will honor any and all treaty obligations/commitments to NATO. But he doesn't. In fact, he complains like hell about that alliance (and our allies and friends in it). He talks about undercutting it. THIS, of course, encourages putin's aggression.

But, hey, MAGA knew full well that trump panders to putin, yet it still decided to vote to reinstate our enemy's puppet back in the WH....

Afghanistan has been invaded for centuries, you’d think someone would get a clue in a millennia or two….

There is a reason it is called “the graveyard of empires.”
That's a cliche which surprises me not.

The Brits finally left Afghanistan after they were depleted by World War I. The Afghans had nothing to do with it.

Before then the Brits suffered a defeat in Afghanistan in the 1840s while they were focusing on China and creating the new 99 years colony of Hong Kong where the people wish they still belonged to Britain.

The Brits returned to Afghan in the 1870s because the new local emir received a diplomatic delegation from Russia but refused the one from India in the name of Her Britannic Majesty Victoria. The Brits did not want a Russian friendly Afghanistan near or next to India. Gen. Roberts the Viceroy of India led a British force of 40,000 that kicked Afghan ass marching all over the place and expelled the Russians.

The Afghans being Afghans fought back to win some and lose some. At Christmas time 1879 some 50,000 tribesmen attacked the 7,000-strong British garrison outside Kabul. By dawn on Christmas Eve the tribes had been turned back. Gen. Roberts then re-occupied Kabul. Roberts was joined by LtGen Sir Donald Stewart who had advanced by forced march from Kandahar and defeated an Afghan army at Ahmed Khel.

Afghanistan kaput.

As I mentioned the Brits finally had to leave because of World War I. They returned with the US until 2021 when they went home due to the coequal stupidity of Biden and Trump.

Before this Alexander The Great conquered the tribes of the place as did Darius before him. Mahmud of Ghazni ruled Afghanistan during Europe's Medieval times followed by Genghis Khan. What it comes down to is that over a couple of thousand years a lot of stupid tribesmen of that barren place have died for a shithole. Nobody can tell me they have anything to show for it.

The uniformed Pentagon wants access to the base in Afghanistan and considers it a need.

It is a long hump between US Pacific Command that goes from San Diego to India and the Indian Ocean, to include Japan, SK, Taiwan, the Philippines, SE Asian allies, Australia -- and the US Central Command that has the ME and South Asia that in Afghanistan has the Bagram base. The armed forces commanders in the US Indo-Pacific Command and in US Central Command want Bagram and consider that they need it. It's been a tough haul since Trump-Biden managed to muck up the works in Afghanistan to include Bagram.

This is not a MAGAs vs democracy issue, it is rather a military matter of needing an air base the US got used to and that is an important link between US Indo Pacific Command and US Central Command.

bullshit. he's gotten NATO to commit to 5% of their GDP for NATO contribution. And trump sells Ukraine weapons - paid for by NATO
But, hey, MAGA knew full well that trump panders to putin, yet it still decided to vote to reinstate our enemy's puppet back in the WH....
what are you even trying to say

White House hostage envoy Adam Boehler met with Taliban officials in Kabul while working to get hostage George Glezmann released, the first direct meeting since the pullout in 2021.

Boehler, along with another U.S. envoy, Zalmay Khalilzad, met with the Taliban's foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, and reportedly discussed ways to "develop bilateral relations between the two countries, issues related to citizens, and investment opportunities in Afghanistan," according to a Taliban statement.

So what? He's insulted our allies and called our participation in NATO into question. Doing this encourages our enemies to question our commitment to NATO and to Europe.

Trump stopped aid to Ukraine. He also stopped a very critical thing we were doing to help that country defend itself against trump's pal, putin: he stopped sharing our intel with Ukraine, which had the effect of greatly undercutting that country's ability to target and thus to attack, in real time, putin's incoming drones and missiles.

NO ONE anymore can take our commitments for granted. Not even when we've signed treaties. THIS is what trump has reduced us to: a pathetic and weak nation whose word and whose signature means NOTHING.

And, don't forget that memorable moment in Helsinki, when the POTUS and CinC emerged from that very, very private one-on-one meeting with the leader of our nation's enemy and announced, to the world, that he had decided to dump the considered opinions and assessments of American intel and security agencies in favor of putin's "word for it"??

Jesus, that alone should have made very single person in this country determined that this pos would never, ever again get near the Oval Office. But it didn't.

So....how does trump plan to persuade the Taliban to hand over Bagram to the United States?

And keep in mind, the last time trump "negotiated" with the Taliban, he ended up simply handing everything over to that terrorist group. AND trump failed even to try to include safe passage for our very own troops in his contract with the Taliban!

Trump and NATO are tight. if you think some transactional criticism that led to NATO nations ponying up 5%
"encourages our enemies" that is a pretty weird calculus

He paused only offensive intelligence for a short period. Aid is flowing like wine -paid for by nato

how did Trump abrogate the NATO treaty?

Turns out the us intelligence committees - particularly the FBI and CIA were big player in the russian hoax

sour grapes mixed with poor assessments. Trump is up to his eyeballs with "security guarantee" for Ukraine
Pisses me off we're dragged into another foreign war not of our business

Don't forget that we have to maintain forces to counter China.

Forces to counter North Korea.

Forces to bolster Israel as they pound on Gaza and to keep the other ME nations from attacking Israel.

Forces to keep Iran isolated and to be able to strike to deter nuclear weapon creation.

Forces in Europe to maintain our NATO commitment that also serves our own interests.

Among the many other military positionings around the world. When you think about the broader picture, you will begin to see why that will have a further drain on our capabilities. Oh, forgot to mention one other thing....

Trump needs forces to invade US cities over exaggerated crime stats.

If Afghanistan doesn’t give Bagram Airbase back to those that built it, the United States of America, BAD THINGS ARE GOING TO HAPPEN!!! President DJT

In this hemisphere, we are threatening Venezuela, the War Department will be stretched a little thin……

It's so hard to remember what we are supposed to celebrate Trump for. In his first term, his ability to come up with a deal to get out of Afghanistan was proof of his awesomeness. He was great. None better. Or something.

Now, he wants to go back into Afghanistan. Um. Great? None better?

So, what are Trump’s options for “getting Bagram AB back”?🤔.
I know, let’s destroy it to save it.😵‍💫🤯

Why even bother to try?

Why even bother to try?
Just a play on words. In this case the old line used during the world communist domination scare used to keep a country’s government and people from coming under communism. “We had to kill them to save them.”

What he said he would do: end the war in 24 hours. Sorry, if someone thinks their negotiation skills are that good and make that pitch, there's no "oh but what do you expect him to do?" card to play. He's let Putin completely stand him up and look weak because he's been strung along by Putin and gotten nothing out of the talks he's had thus far.

He is enlarging the US presense both now and post war. Following in Biden's footsteps...wunderbar
Russia's also now threatening its neighbors with incursions over NATO airspace. So much for "Russia's afraid of Trump".

I believe that ship sailed some time back.
Well, then we'll have to redefine this new phase. Maybe we'll need Defcon-like levels for his nuttiness:

NUTCON 5Full Nutella
NUTCON 4Ball Park Nuts
NUTCON 3Nutter Butter
