Army recruiting shatters records

Who is "they"? Where is this "study"?

The National Bureau of Economic Research

We perform a field experiment to measure racial discrimination in the labor market. We respond with fictitious resumes to help-wanted ads in Boston and Chicago newspapers. To manipulate perception of race, each resume is assigned either a very African American sounding name or a very White sounding name. The results show significant discrimination against African-American names: White names receive 50 percent more callbacks for interviews. We also find that race affects the benefits of a better resume. For White names, a higher quality resume elicits 30 percent more callbacks whereas for African Americans, it elicits a far smaller increase. Applicants living in better neighborhoods receive more callbacks but, interestingly, this effect does not differ by race. The amount of discrimination is uniform across occupations and industries. Federal contractors and employers who list Equal Opportunity Employer' in their ad discriminate as much as other employers. We find little evidence that our results are driven by employers inferring something other than race, such as social class, from the names. These results suggest that racial discrimination is still a prominent feature of the labor market.

Sorry but that isnt at all what DEI does.

1st...in the federal government up until January 20th, DEI created thousands and thousands of senior level jobs (that we cant afford and that our grandchildren will be stuck paying the bill for) to promote and push DEI. It didnt solve anything because there is no evidence of iniquity.
2nd...DEI pushes the notion that everything is inherently racist...that white people are inherently racist, that every system is inherently racist, and if you disagree with that you must therefore be inheritlently racist.
3rd...DEI caused the creation of quota systems and special set asides for minorities, women, and LGBTQQKOSJJSHOSOJNFIDSJFHNSDNKJSDNJ+++ people, with programs that they cant even define.

The solution to the problems of inequality is not to pretend they don't exist.

The biggest beneficiaries of AA and DEI have been white women. Second place on that list is Asian Americans. And guess what, when given the opportunity, they tend to do, pretty well.

No, the biggest problem is not the shrieking racist, it's how racism can be subtle. The White HR director doesn't go in thinking, "I'm just going to hire white folks today.", but there is still a bias.

As to your hiring situation...do you SERIOUSLY believe that only white people get hired based on the recommendations of others? When you were hired were you a dirtbag POS that couldnt do the job but hey..."I know this guy...he'll be great...cuz he's white........"

REALLY?

Bullshit.

I can say one of those jobs I was an absolutely terrible fit, and I only lasted a year. (But I think that was more them than me.)

You are dealing in absolutes. Does EVERY white person get hired because of connections? No. But it helps in some cases.

So is being able to afford a nice suit or someone to professionally write your resume and LinkedIn Profile.

the problem is that white privilege is self-sustaining and generational.

They'll be deployed to Gaza.

Well.

If my name was Shamee'quee'us....I'd go ahead and change it to "Jennifer". Do what Howard Stern says: just act like a middle aged White person. Good advice.

But anyway.....interesting info. I'm not kidding when I say this: if I had one of those "very African American sounding names".....I'd go ahead and change it. You're not African, you have never been to Africa. This is America. When in Rome.......

I know that may sound harsh. But hard realities are....hard.🤷‍♂️ Being totally serious here.

Come on...stop being a ****ing meme.

Maybe you were hired because someone knew you...were you hired solely because you were white? You dont think black people get hired because people know them and recommend them for jobs? And I'm sorry...but can you not seeing how ****ing racist your comments are? 'black people' cant afford nice suits. 'black people' cant write professional resumes.

The whole concept of white privilege is ****ing stupid. By percentage...7% of white people grow up in abject poverty. 13% black Americans row up in abject poverty. By actual number? the number of poor white dwarfs the number of poor blacks. By percentage, approx 60% of black Americans thrive...live middle to upper income lives...have parents that bust their ass to provide opportunity fore their children. Own homes and businesses. By percentage...approx 70% of white Americans thrive by the same standard.

Your comments are embarrassing. But you DO manage to demonstrate why the race baiting shills throw that shit out there...because they know people like you will swallow it.

On this we can agree. The democratic party and DEI ideology had driven the one indispensable demographic group out - the backbone of the US military. For years we were warned that identity politics was crippling our military and rapidly contributing to increasing shortfalls. CRT/ DEI ideologues and Democrats refused to listen, preferring to alienate males, whites, straights, and southerners with their bilge they created the crisis.

Once a strong leader arrived to inspire service, to return the military to the only identity that counts - that of a US soldier - the backbone is now returning.

Whether or not is a good thing may depend on how Trump uses, or misuses, a rebuilt military.
MAGA tripe.
Fact is the Army was beating its recruitment goals last February. Back when DEI and CRT were in full force.
Simple reasons- 1500 more recruiters, branching out from a concentration on High Schools to job boards, and programs to help potential enlistees pass the tests to join....
The Convict isn't a strong leader- he is a petty vindictive fraud....
Biden was rebuilding the military, and the Neo-Imperialist is looking to take that organization and spending it around the world, not unlike the Neo-Cons he attacked as war mongers did after 9/11.... ✌️

I'm being realistic. A professional resume writer can cost upwards of $300.00. A nice suit can cost upwards of $1000. If you are not in a good economic space (and you just admitted black people are more likely to be poor in this country than white folks), these can be real handicaps to finding a better position.

Of course, the notion of white privilege offends white folks who truly need to believe that all their success in life is due to their own efforts. No one is deriding your efforts, but a lot of life is just plain, simple, dumb luck.

We have had 400 years of institutionalized, systematic racism in this country, to include

Slavery
Jim Crow
Redlining
Miscegenation laws
Voter Suppression
Sundown Laws

I could go on, but you get the idea. Now, yes, we've made strives to fix these things, and America deserves credit in that it's the only country that has these kinds of issues because of our diversity. But we still have a very long way to go.

Let's avoid what I think people like you swallow and stay with some facts. Both White and Black poor are in job deserts- whites in rural areas and blacks in urban.
However, study after study shows discrimination in the hiring process continues.
You use the bias in your 'facts'- you want to ignore percents when looking at abject poverty but embrace the percentage when talking who is 'thriving'.
Study after study has shown there is a bias in hiring. Try looki9ng that up instead of playing silly games with who swallows what.

I don't disagree. Up until the 1960's, blacks and whites shared the same given names - John, Mary, Thomas, etc.

Yes, the use of "Africanized" names became more popular after that, but so has white people giving their kids "unique" sounding names, which is why you see names like Madison, Tyler, Hunter.

What, specifically, do you think should be done? That hasn't already been done?
I think we need to equalize education, to start with.

Invest in rebuilding our urban areas to provide opportunities.

reform public assistance and entitlements so people aren't trapped in poverty.

And, yes, promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in workplaces and universities.

Sadly, you're never going to be able to do that

Wealthy families will always get their children better education.

The Ivy League colleges can no longer discriminate based on skin tint due to a SC ruling, but they can still discriminate on the bases of wealth in what are known as “legacy” student admissions. Yet more white privilege.

They can discriminate on the basis of education level - claiming it reflects intelligence.

Hell, we saw a hell of a lot of that during the "Hippie" era. I went to school with countless kids named Fawn, Flower, Sunflower, Heather, Aspen, Harmony, Sage, Willow, Peace, Dawn, Nova, Astral, Wren, Star, Moon, and the like.

And for guys, "Keanu" was actually not unknown. And my younger cousin born of hippie parents was named "Tevian". And one can not forget Dweezil Zappa, brother of Moon Unit Zappa.

In the 1960s and early 1970s there was a huge trend among a segment of "white parents" giving their kids names that reflected their hippie beliefs. That is why one of the most stereotypical "80s girl names" of Heather came to be. It ranked in the "Top 1,000 girl names" in the 1930s and 1940s, but absolutely surged in the 1960s into the top 100. And every kid who went to school with the kids of hippies knew multiple Heather's.

I even knew one girl that honest to god was named "Bunny" by her hippie parents. On her birth certificate and everything. And even in school when first meeting her teachers would get incensed when she insisted that was her name and not a nickname. And when connecting with her again years later on Facebook, she said that has been a lifelong issue. With even cops refusing to believe it was her real name, and her having to use "Brenda" on resumes or potential employers would not take her seriously.

She even laughed when I told her she should have joined the military. I would have paid almost anything to see a promotion or award ceremony where the recipient was "Private Bunny Smith". I can imagine the entire company or battalion breaking into laughter, and the adjutant fighting to keep a straight face while reading it.

But I think a lot of the "Africanized" names started after 1977 when Roots became a cultural phenomenon.

And yet those “unique” sounding names have now become standard, and yet parents still seem to think of them as being “unique” even though they are all over the place. How many times do we rain across Jaden and Jayden and Hayden and Kaden etc etc etc. My kids are Christopher and Lauren, two names that have stood the test of time without being overly used.

For white people with presumtions of grandeur, they give their children last names for first names - like Mackenzie Smith.

Being Trump is a draft dodger why is his name connected with enlistment numbers?
