I don’t think today’s American right wing conservatives have a proper understanding of liberal, or frankly even their own purported conservatism. To them it’s just an insult like communist, socialist, leftist, Stalinist, lesbian, homo and a bunch of racial slurs. It’s not a term with a real meaning to them, it’s just a catch all derogative for anyone they disagree with. The cons today use the term liberal and communist interchangeably because they are brainwashed morons.
Like a certain poster who calls everyone "commies" being an ignorant moron.I don’t think today’s American right wing conservatives have a proper understanding of liberal, or frankly even their own purported conservatism. Conservatism on the other hand is “whatever I want it to be today but usually anti anyone I don’t like.”
They are in effect treated as tribal monikers, like gang patches.
Who cares? It was MY money that I was "deducting".
Because it's YOUR money.
Why in the cornbread-hell is keeping more of YOUR money "ridiculous"?
That's awesome! You get to keep more of YOUR money.
Which is stupid. E-mail has made the post-office obsolete.
++ Yet I still get stuff delivered daily. And just sent a birthday card out today
You mean taxpayer money paid for when the Defense Department created it and then went commercial.
++ Precisely, thank you, US government for helping and delighting me and others with this.
No, it is not your money or my money in any extreme sense. Whatever I possess came with the assistance of society, from the Latin "socius," meaning ally. Public education paid for by my taxes and those of others. A corporation that hired me was assisted by well, being able to incorporate. Roads paid for by the community that allow me to get to work, complete with stop signs and lights to make them safer. Safety regulations preventing injury by machines or poisoning by pesticides. Knowing what is in my food.Stop and start doing for yourself. This nation is overflowing with parasites and generational welfare brood-mares.
++ "Welfare brood mares"? Wow, welcome to George Wallace territory, before he apologized. I notice you don't mention "corporate fat cats" with government subsidies, the other side's epithet.
Whatever I'm "getting" is more than offset by the amount I pay in taxes. This is a decidedly one-sided relationship I have with the government and I'm getting raped.
++ Sorry that you are being assaulted by a government we elect. Write your representatives to end welfare and food assistance, assuring the, that we can make up the diff by tossing coins to beggars and working in soup kitchens.
I suspect I'll never fully reclaim what it's cost me. SS is a loser program. Americans would be far better off investing their own money. The payoff would be greater and they would be able to pass that money along to their children when they die.
++ An old, ridiculous claim by opponents of one of the most successful social programs ever. You can still invest your money if you wish. But the vast majority of us do not want to spend our spare time reading prospectuses, the financial pages, talking with brokers. It is an insurance program. And why do I want to give it to my kid? He'll get everything else.
Why refuse benefits I've more than paid for? How about I keep my money then the problem of medical benefits are "mine" and not the governments who can do nothing well (military excluded).
++ Oh, I see: the only good thing the government does is blow up things and kill people. That would have been news to those whose homes and lives are being saved from fires and floods, to me benefitting from government approval of drugs to treat chronic illness, to my parents on relief when hungry during the depression, to beneficiaries of the homestead act, to farmers who benefit from government subsidized water and imported cheap labor and other subsidies.
Arguably one of the most breathtakingly stupid things I've ever read on this site.
You're statement seems to suggest that my money belongs to the government first and not me. And yet I was the one who earned that money...not the government. They don't earn anything.
Oh, HELL NO! But if you wish you are able to pay more into the system.
It's YOUR money.
Do with it what you like.
Well you must really hate America as our laws protect the individual. No, it is not your money or my money in any extreme sense. You are free to live in an Ayn Randian world of glorifying selfishness or a Hobbesian world of a war of all against all. Sorry, Ayn, I see my self-interest in solidarity with my fellow humans, the overriding message of the US in the 20th century. Howard Roark was an idiot fascist. No wonder Trump admired the character. And Ayn broke down and collected Social Security. The thought of Medicare must have driven her crazy. And the ACA? Madness.
No one, except my family. Happy to have the laws protect the individual, part of a great liberal tradition, as is the New Deal, where we protect one another. It’s the way of the modern world. That’s the wonder of western liberal democracies: the individual and society both protected, with people free to regulate the level of protection.Well you must really hate America as our laws protect the individual.
I am curious as this all leads to a very fundamental question. So please indulge me by answering the question, who owns you?
Apparently, not at all true as you seem to believe the government has a right to your earnings. No one, except my family.

FDR was one of the worst things to happen to this country and the New Deal did nothing but prolong the Depression....as is the New Deal, where we protect one another.
For all out sakes, let's hope not. It’s the way of the modern world.
Free people aren't regulated. That’s the wonder of western liberal democracies: the individual and society both protected, with people free to regulate the level of protection.
Tell that to people on SS and Medicare that they are not free. Tell miners, farmworkers, factory workers how the 8-hour day, safety protections, unemployment insurance, the right to organize, civil rights laws , etc., make them unfree. Then go to other countries that do similar things and try to liberate them as well.Apparently, not at all true as you seem to believe the government has a right to your earnings.
My view is that my earnings belong to me. I earned them and what the government takes is nothing more that legalized theft.
Happy to have the laws protect the individual, part of a great libertarian tradition...
Fixed it for ya...you're welcome!

So Bill Maher is actually an anti-vaxxer who doesn't think the pandemic is real.I like your takes...
I would probably most identfy with Bill Maher ...
Or early 2000s liberalism
