Appreciation thread

I miss BK's Whoppers. I hope the EU will force France to open its borders to BK again, their burgers are better than McDo's imo.

Why the hell does France not have BK?

I used to visit my dad as a kid when he was working in Brussels in the 80's and to tell the truth I did not like the city very much, but I was amazed how polite the people were, total strangers would salute themselves in the elevator:shock:;)

Antwerp/Anvers well that is a fun city! Louvain sounds nice too, I have heard a lot of good things about its Catholic University.

I don't like Brussels neither. There are several great buildings in the center and in the European district, but if I was the burgmester I'd burn most of the city.

And yeah, Louvain is cool. The first reason why I go there is the cheap beer, and the second reason is the university :p

Hmmm not sure about that... but I would trade my Johnny Hallyday against your Jacques Brel:cool:

OK, but I want a free entrance to the Louvre

We don't have them in Belgium neither. Every time we go to Spain, BK is our first meal

Im assuming Belgian French and mainland French are actually quiet different?

Another reason why Sarkozy is barking mad. How can you not have BK? Why the hell is it not in Belgium or France? Please explain??? :doh

We are the ones who speak without mistakes :)

j/k it depends on the region, there are 3 or 4 different French accents in Belgium, and many more in France

*Eagerly waiting for Paris's reaction*

We have another brand, "Quick"

It's the Belgian McDonalds, a bit more expensive and slightly better

Ah so thats why the Belgians go to Spain and the French to Holland: to order their meals at BK;)

It has come into light through Kaya's discussion that perhaps we take US for granted so to make up for it in our own special way we created this

Now get our thinking caps on and list the things you like about the United States.

I'll start.
TV shows. They make the best shows from Lost to Family Guy, American Dad ...

Ach. I hate the concept behind this thread. I don't think we have any need to thank the US in such a manner. I do however like American Dad. Not as good Still Game or Mock the Week, but it's still good.

There are loads and loads of things. They have some good shows like Fraiser and Seinfeld as well as excellent literature like Mark Twain and Henry James. I love the healthy place of guns in their culture and admire somewhat their greater commitment to conservatism and limited gov't. Then of course there is Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Publius, Brutus, the federal farmer, John Randolph of Roanoke, Calhoun, Thoreau, Lysander Spooner, Russell Kirk, Richard Weaver, Robert Nisbet and many more.

I do object to the assertion they make the best tv shows however. Certainly in comedy we Brits kick their arses. Blackadder, The office, Only fools and horses, Teachers, Men behaving badly, Dad's army, Monthy Python, Coupling, Father Ted, Blackbooks, The Fastshow, The Vicar of Dibly,The Goodlife etc, I could on and on

There are so many things that I like about the United States.

First things that come to mind:

Andy Warhol, Martin Luther King, Henry Thoreau, the Cohen brothers, Woody Allen, Henry Miller, the misterious J.D Sallinger, Janis Joplin, Homer Simpsons, Dorothea Lange, Louis Hine, my favourite Robert Frank and of course the best ever Bugs Bunny !!!

I really appreciate the way people are treated in shops and restaurants (even though sometimes totally overdone) but I prefer that over being yelled at by café waiters in Paris. I appreciate the way people are more relaxed and more civilised when theyu drive (compared to France again)

I love the scenery, the magestical natural monuments, the desert....

Oh and I love clam chouder and dingdongs (yes dingdongs) and Oreo Cookies

OooOoooh, which reminds me of Jerry's famous Deli on Ventura boulevard in LA, and Pinks hot dogs, was it on Highland boulevard ?? (anyone here from LA) ?

Damn the peanut butter and jelly sandwitches, wicked !!!! when I first discovered them I thought I had just tasted food from heaven :fly:

My favorite things about the United States:

- No matter what kind of environment you want to live in, there is a city in the United States that meets your qualifications...and it is no hassle at all to pick up and move across country (aside from the usual stuff like family/job issues).

- Generally speaking, the United States is probably the most liberal nation in the world when it comes to freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

- Race relations are quite good here. Perhaps there will always be some simmering problems, but I've never encountered the kind of cross-racial respect/tolerance/intermingling in any other country, except maybe Canada.

- The cost of living is much lower here than in almost any other developed nation (this is both a positive and a negative, as it's largely due to the weak dollar).

- Our universities are, quite simply, the best in the world.

- No other nation can produce good movies as consistently as the United States can.

- Our political system is very stable and moderate...it is almost always played between the 40-yard lines.

- We have one of the most diverse and resilient economies in the world. What other nation has an economy strong enough to quickly rebound from the flooding of a major city, or a terrorist attack that killed 3,000 people?

- There is more upward mobility here than in many other countries. I think this is largely due to cultural idiosyncrasies rather than economic reasons. Americans, no matter how rich or poor, constantly think about how they can do better and how their kids can do better. In many parts of the world, lower-class people are discouraged from "selling out" by working to succeed.

Dunno, maybe he could help you with yours. After all you made a spelling mistake earlier.
No unfortunately he is British.
as has been stated before I am Dyslexic.

Is that why you don't post serious stuff then?
Nah thats boredom, re-hashing the same old same old, the swift visits to other forums to plagiarize, hold no charm for me.

What does amuse me is the ego's of some poster here, who because they take their role in this fine place so seriously, are prepared to pm another member and demand an explanation as to why they had "thanked" another member who's post opposed theirs, sad and rather anal dont you agree?

What are you talking about?

No what is rather sad and anal is some posters have so little to do that they come to a political discussion site and hardly ever post anything that could be considered a contribution. Instead they make little trolling jokes constantly and thank people for attacking people they don't like without ever having the guts to stand up seriously for their positions.

Like most posters I wish those folks would go back under their bridge and give the rest of us some peace....
