I've been watching FTWD now, the orginal series I gave up on but I'm liking the new series's (more then the critics in all likliehood)

I was wondering if anyone else is watching it and if they have any thoughts about the events so far, especially the episode last Sunday.

I had two pet peeves with the new episode,

1) travis after being kind of smart the first two episodes has seem to turn really dumb and the third one. Like resisting Daniels effort to kill the zombie in the living room, then stopping Maddie from killing her neighbor who dad turned.

2) The neighbors husband arrives home in LA The night after there was a huge riot and the military and police were killing zombies trying to escape from hospitals, and remarks he drove back from Salt Lake City driving into his house with the car with Utah license plates, he seems completely oblivious of everything that it happened even though the neighborhood in East LA is become a war zone

Travis is "good people" remember - and he still can't wrap his head around the fact these people are reanimated corpses. To him at this stage they may just be sick.

I can get that for neighbor Susan, but the other neighbor who was choosing down on the dog in the living room actually attacked him and was clearly a danger and he still yelled something like "put the gun down" when Maddie comes in with the trap gun.

He's being kind of irrational now, which is ironic because he initially was the only one who believed the heroin addicted son.

And he's like the only one.

The other scene that got me wS in the end where the soldiers are talking to the family and Travis completely answers their questions gives them the Salazaars names etc

Maddie in the backyard is asked Bout the mound of dirt where they buried zompeter and lies about it beig a dog.

I think she's becoming a survivor faster then he is.

Keep in perspective the show exists in a universe in which there is no Zombie lore, no Night of the Living Dead, no perspective in which to contemplate reanimated corpses with 20/20 hindsight.

And he hates guns.

I mean I know, but even if zombie lord didn't exist if I come home and my neighbor has made my dog a chew toy my first thought is not going to be to reason with him.

Even if I didn't have a gun and hated them in that case I wouldn't run towards them.....

Especially those break action, double barrel over and under 'pump' shotgun, guns. ;)

Ive been watching it. Some people I know are really dissatisfied. I'm actually OK with the progression. People want this to be an extension of the Walking Dead. Its a prequeal. Not having watched the Walking Dead and just being Joe Schmoe ( or in this case, Travis Schmoe) how the hell could your brain get around even the idea of real live honest to goodness reanimated dead people? Who here wouldnt have struggles trying to make sense of it all, especially with the limited knowledge they have?

I I thought the story of the next door neighbors was extremely hokey. The arrival of the cavalry out of the blue...makes no sense. Still...I'll give it the season. The whole world is trying to understand something that doesnt make sense and in the meantime, people are blaming cops for killing poor innocent victims, theres riots, power outages...I think thats all pretty real world actually.

To be fair though in a world without zombie Lore, even in a world with it, some of those police shootings depicted in the series in real life would look very outrageous. If you didn't know that there were undead people running around gnawihg peoples faces off, The scene of the second episode where that small woman police officer kills the hippie woman with green hair who become a zombie, she hadn't actually attacked anyone yet she was just wandering around it into a society where zombie Laura's unknown she would pretty much look like some high drug user just walking around and a shooting would look very outrageous on camera, specially when people were already mad about the shooting of the homeless guy who would apparently become a zombie.

That said I wouldn't blame the cops over the shooting on the freeway in the first episode, biting EMTs is a big no-no

I think they need to explain how a country gets over run by slowly shambling undead people needs to be explained (never understood how Night of the Living Dead turned into Dawn of the Dead and the sequels, the former ends with some gun toting deputies "cleaning up" - what happened?) so I'm glad to see the military involved which means they might explain how on Earth it all turns to ****. Once you're in anyway prepared for zombies existing they cease to become much of a threat. Much like they're a non-threat right now in the main series.

We've been watching it, mostly because our main addiction (TWD) isn't on at the moment. :)

It is reasonably entertaining. It was (according to the producer) supposed to be more suspense than outright horror/gore, and the protagonists are people who don't really grasp what they're up against and don't really know how to defend themselves... at least, not yet. Average-ish Angelinos.

If such a thing ever happened in real life, even WITH our existing Zombie Lore, it would be hard for Joe Blow to wrap his mind around. It would take some time for most to see what was really going on, and to let go of their existing expectations and norms and adapt to the new reality. That's part of the show's appeal.

As someone who is a "survivalist" of a sort (a rational sort... more concerned about hurricanes than zombies, lol), I know "preppers" or "survivalists" who try to write "survivalist fiction". They frequently end up either being boring or overly technical, because they're portraying well-equipped, well-trained people who are mentally and emotionally ready for the Epoxyclips and who don't make many/any stupid decisions when it comes. As I told some of them, "They hid in their well-stocked retreat and made all good decisions and no bad decisions and nobody found them to attack them and they lived happily ever after" makes for a great survival plan, but is a very dull story. :D

All good dramatic stories are about real people who aren't perfectly logical all the time, and all good stories need character development and the drama that comes from "things not going as planned".

I know they have to stick with the walking dead zombie thing...but this would all be so much better if the people 'turned' while living and not the whole living, even without a heart pumping thing. There are so many ways they could take it. with zombie zombies...you just sort of have to accept it and go.

Well the Walking dead universe everyone is infected and everyone who dies of anything (except brain trauma or destruction of the brain stem) will turn and become a walker. while some zombie lore has this built in, not all do.

so you would have that element where alot of people could be infected before realizing what's happening. like the first episode when the junkie son escapes from the hospital? his roommate is coding, and when Travis and Maddie show up later the nurse looks all freaked out and can't complete her sentences? the old guy turned, probably bit some orderlies and a doctor, who would've had their wounds cleaned and sent home. where they would've turned and attacked unsuspecting family members. that problem multiplies very quickly, once you have large numbers of the dead they become dangerous in swarms.

I just watched tonight's episode. I have to say that, even though this series is nothing like TWD, I'm liking it a lot.

We have people who know something is happening, but they are kept away from any knowledge what it is by a military that is attempting to control everyone who is in a few "safe zones". Anyone who is deemed to be a health risk of any kind is being taken away to some "hospital". From what we know of the "walker" world from TWD, it's certain that the military won't be able to maintain control. The question is how long it'll be till they lose it and what the family is going to do when things really break down.

On a side note, I'm really looking forward to seeing that dickhead Lieutenant turn into a walker.

I finished binge watching it and I think its better than TWD- for one there are no filler scenes in which its obvious the show writers make up a scene and stretch it out just to pad the running time like what they regularly do in TWD.

I'll also be honest, I never liked any of the characters in TWD because they were so different as was portrayed in the comics and I dont like much of the characters in FTWD either... except for one: Strand- I think he is absolutely badass, a James Bond character in a zombie apocalypse. I will watch season 2 just for him and I hope he doesnt die.

Me and my friends who live on sailboats have often wondered why people don't just flee to the ocean in these zombie tv shows. Glad a show is finally going to cover this strategy.

That would have been my first thought too if there ever was a zombie epidemic, either a boat or a small island that you can patrol and grow crops on.

Thats why I hated TWD, they never went to the coast and instead just kept going around in forests or small towns- its like they were moving in a circle.

Just like in the original series I find myself yelling at the screen "How can you be so stupid".

You would think if you trip the hoard, I mean like pulling along a rope or something at leg level, then it would be easier to take them out. Without them moving forward I mean.

Shouldn't the military have been trained for something like this? Controlling groups of bodies.

How long can you realistically survive on a boat?

You wouldn't live on the boat, it gives you mobility

You can retreat to sea and land an island or coast somewhere

Although pirates may be something to worry about

If this thing is world wide, anywhere you land you will have to deal with walkers when you need provisions.

Well you can fish so food shouldnt be a problem. ;)

And youve got mobility and the sea is zombie free so you should be able to make expeditions for supplies.

True, there's advantages and disadvantages to each course of action. There is no perfect solution.

I enjoy watching the new series, even though I do not like some things, like characters. But, it is the step-child of Walking Dead, and I love that show.
