Art major Aliza Shvarts '08 wants to make a statement.
Beginning next Tuesday, Shvarts will be displaying her senior art project, a documentation of a nine-month process during which she artificially inseminated herself "as often as possible" while periodically taking abortifacient drugs to induce miscarriages. Her exhibition will feature video recordings of these forced miscarriages as well as preserved collections of the blood from the process.
The goal in creating the art exhibition, Shvarts said, was to spark conversation and debate on the relationship between art and the human body. But her project has already provoked more than just debate, inciting, for instance, outcry at a forum for fellow senior art majors held last week. And when told about Shvarts' project, students on both ends of the abortion debate have expressed shock . saying the project does everything from violate moral code to trivialize abortion.
But Shvarts insists her concept was not designed for "shock value."

Freedom means the freedom to do wrong, supporting that freedom does not in any way mean one supports how another uses it.

One can be morally opposed to abortion, and be for the liberty to have one. You argument here is tantamount to crediting a man's blathering to free-speech advocates.

Abortions are wrong, but to use force in order to stop them would be much worse. Being pro-choice, I will not apologize for this moron anymore than I will a murderer because I am pro-gun rights.

The pro-choice side is not to blame for abortions taking place; they took place with regularity before they were decriminalized. It is unfortunate that this woman used the abortion controversy to gain notoriety, making a public spectacle of a private matter. It is sad for her that she felt compelled to use her body in such a destructive fashion.

After thinking on it a bit I don't believe she really had abortions as it isn't that easy to get pregnant with a turkey baster, especially repetitively, and none of her pregnancies were confirmed. I actually kind of think she's full of crap and just trying to rile everyone up to get people screaming that this is an outrage. If that's the case you almost have to bet she's a prolifer, because there would be no benefit to the prochoice side. I do so want her to be a nutty prochoicer but I'm betting she's a goof from my own side. It just doesn't make sense for a prochoicer to do such a thing. It also doesn't seem logistically credible that she did such a thing.

Clearly she's a nut but I wouldn't bet against her being one of my sides nuts vs. one of the others.

I actually kind of think she's full of crap and just trying to rile everyone up to get people screaming that this is an outrage. Very true. We constantly have people out there that purposely rub others the wrong way for the simple purpose of 15 minutes of fame...or infame. This just reeks of attention-grabbing.

Seems too many people have forgotten the difference between legitimately evocative art and mere shock value.

Pro-Lifers have been using the pictures of a developing fetus in picketing abortion clinics, as a means of arguing, "It's a Baby, not a choice!"

Perhaps an art category of Family Planning could encourage the development of more artful and tasteful depictions of a beautiful side of the contraceptive and abortive processes of family planning.
