And the BIG winner in Alabama is...............................

The big winner in Alabama was Jones and the Democrats. When deep red Alabama is going blue, Trump, Pence and their band of pedo sympathizers are in deep ****. Keep hitching your wagon to those nutters, republicans.

At this point the GOP has to start thinking of exit plans if their wise -- no, I won't hold my breath.

They've got to figure out how to distance themselves from Trump. Tonight was the memo on Trumpism as a philosophy: it's over.

It's only going to get worse too. Trump has nothing to show for all his boasting, and people are starting to wake-up and see HIM as the elitist, sitting around doing nothing but telling them how to vote and making a mockery of the American political system.

Nah, the biggest winners in Alabama were the Americans who reside there, including the ones who voted for Moore. This victory is a small step towards stopping the Trump/alt right agenda.

I can't help but think that Alabama going blue had more to do with Roy Moore chasing children around with his penis than Donald Trump being President. This is a state that voted for him in a landslide, after all.

You're not wrong. Without the kid-touching stuff, Moore wins going away.

That said, I can't help but wonder if some of the conservative element in Alabama didn't feel a bit patronized by having Steve Bannon and Louie Gohmert tell them not to let out-of-state interests tell them how to vote. I'm hoping this is more a rejection of Bannonism, which is far more frightening than Trumpism. Steve Bannon is pure evil.

That incredibly ironic talking point may very well have played a part, but it's too early to claim it's the end of anything.

Oh, it’s certainly not. I’d venture Jones is almost guaranteed to lose his title defense. But he beat King Wingnut in the most wingnut state in the union, and there’s something to be said for that when you consider the brand of people Moore brought in to speak on his behalf.

All true, but lets not lose sight of the Pence gain. In retrospect, maybe not the "big" winner, but certainly one helluva beneficiary. As far as I know, Pence neither campaigned for or otherwise supported Roy Moore. Trump on the other hand has serious egg on his political face as a result of the Jones victory.

Mike Pence - who has got to be laughing his ass off right about now.

Nope. Abortionists.

Moore’s strength was from the pro-life crowd which is very strong in Alabama.

I wouldn’t try to read too many anti-Trump tea leaves about this one. It was Moore’s early adult hood and his pro life stancethst was the issue in the campaign. I haven’t seen the totals but I suspect the write in’s were disgruntled Republicans. Polls showed that Trump was a minor issue.

I think every one is glad it’s over.

If there is a lasting effect from this, it's not in Alabama; Moore's reputation will have done significantly more damage to the people who flocked to Alabama to support him than they will have done to him. Bannon might have some awful ideas, but the average voter cares far more about a grown man trying to **** teenagers than immigration policy or law & order. This is simply the nature of the human mind; abstract concepts will always pale in comparison to something visceral and emotionally charged.

I like how people can just get away with calling others pedophiles when they don't even in fact qualify for such a thing. The stupidity for this brand of forum is so laughable sometimes.

Hebephiles deserve recognition, dammit! Lol

...I actually did try to correct the misinformation on here a few times, but it quickly occurred to me that not even I particularly cared about the distinction.

Considering that Trump begged Alabama voters both in person and on twitter to vote for Moore...I'd say Trump was more than just a "minor issue".

He has had egg on his face before and all the reaction seems to be is, ‘how would you like those eggs, over easy?’
Also seems to have been a thin margin, there was another post yesterday concerning the Alabama election committee, saying that ‘electronic ballots’ would not be saved. Has the ‘good judge’ conceded yet?

Good News: proves the GOP cannot just throw any idiot up on the wall and win, even in AL.

Bad News: Said idiot still received over 48% of the vote.

Take Away: Bannon will have to rethink primary'g every GOP incumbent he doesn't like, because if he does it in moderate states, he's gonna lose bigly.

Crocidile tears

The Alabamires that voted in the polls disagree.

From looking at the exit polls, the majority of white Republicans did vote for Moore. What seemed to give Moore the edge was strong black turn out, as well as winning independents and moderates. Trump spent the last few weeks begging voters in Alabama to vote for Moore.

Now, would Moore have won without all of the recent scandals? Yes, I don't doubt it. But if Alabama voters as a collective group were truly interested in pushing the Trump agenda, they would have overwhelmingly voted for Moore any way, as Trump begged them to do.

I don't think any of the kids on here are capable of making said distinction, apart from throwing slurs and slander in random order.

I love actual, intellectual debate, but sometimes I feel that coming here to DP is one of the most wasted searches for such discussion in my life.

It didn't surprise me that Jones won, but it wouldn't have surprised me had Moore won, either. The tally I saw just moments ago showed them within a single percentage point. I've not seen a race that close in a very long time.

The people of Alabama spoke and that's all that matters. I wish Jones luck.

There's something else that happened last night, however, that's worth paying attention to, because it now, it almost surely will happen again -- tarnishing a candidate's reputation through accusations. Although the race was exceptionally close, that had to be a factor in putting Jones over the top, well, that and Jones' ability to mobilize the black vote. 538 was saying the black vote pulled it out for Jones. But, keep an eye on the accusations that crop up from now on. True or not, it won't matter. We'll see a lot of it.

Trump offered a very gracious - and true -- tweet.

I think you're reading much further into people's disinterest in voting for someone who lusted after high school students than the majority of those voters did.

I guess we'll find out come 2020, eh? Regardless, Trump still lost tonight.

If it makes you feel any better, every other politics forum I've checked out so far is actually worse. Having actually written that out, I see no reason why that would make you feel better.
