Americans are becoming Russians, a people who take pride in their endurance of suffering, even if the suffering is caused by their own stupidity or their blind faith in authoritarian leaders.

I came to this conclusion after watching several episodes of The Americans, an FX series (2013-2018) about Soviet spies posing as an American couple living in a Virginia suburb during the 1980s. The Soviets reflect on the hardships in their own country, sometimes with pride and often in comparison to the “soft” and “spoiled” Americans. It doesn’t occur to them that their problems might be attributable to a Russian “way of life” or form of government.

Americans now accept “thoughts and prayers” as the appropriate response to mass shootings or weather disasters attributed to climate change and say “We’re not pointing fingers” when people demand accountability. They just add the word “Strong” after their community’s name, claiming resilience after scores of people are killed.

Americans screamed about “becoming Russians” every time minorities gained rights in any way, shape, or form. America is a country which takes pride in its blithely celebration of oppressing those who don’t happen to be white, and throws a tantrum whenever anyone points that out.

50 years ago there was a liberal just like you saying the same thing about Vietnam, race, crime, drugs, or whatever else was relevant at the time.

You're also saying the Anglo-Western and Slavic-Eastern cultures have different perspectives on life, sovereignty, and governance? Very astute observation!

The protesters were right, weren't they. America should have bailed on that war long before they did, or never have been there in the first place.
Still with you.
Dropping lately, or so I hear.
Well, that's an industry that protects itself. That's why what hasn't worked for a hundred years gets doubled-down on and gets budget increases annually, because the 'war on drugs' is an industry.
or whatever else was relevant at the time.
People express opinions. Especially intelligent people who pay attention.

How so?
Very astute observation!
