Nearly half of all imported U.S. vegetables and 40 percent of imported fruit are grown in Mexico.

President Donald Trump's threat to shut down the U.S.-Mexico border would hit American consumers — in the gut.

From avocado toast to margaritas, the United States is heavily reliant on Mexican imports of fruit, vegetables and alcohol to meet consumer demand. Nearly half of all imported U.S. vegetables and 40 percent of imported fruit are grown in Mexico, according to the latest data from the United States Department of Agriculture.

Americans would run out of avocados in three weeks if imports from Mexico were stopped, said Steve Barnard, president and chief executive of Mission Produce, the largest distributor and grower of avocados in the world.
No more Wastin' away again in Margaritaville if Trump closes the border.

This is a prime example of impulsive, knee-jerk policy that doesn't weight the unintended consequences of the action.

Not only avocados but closing the border will disrupt other vegetables and alcohol -- as well as parts used in American made finished products.

I therefore think that this is a bluff that will never occur.

Many of the produce companies operating in Mexico are US owned. Perhaps this could be a message to them also.

Regardless, I think we're pretty stocked up on Tequila.

What message would that be -- stop growing vegetables in a natural climate for those vegetables?

Mexico won't make Trump close the border more than one day. I'm sure you can do without your guac for that long.

I wonder, aside from guacamole, what else is avocado good for?

They do get two seasons in some cases but, taking your operation south and using foreign labor might be frowned upon. Also, we have greenhouses all over this country.

Good for making you do that "OMG Freaking Yuck" face. Works on anyone with normal taste buds. This being April 1st, there is a good chance jokes might be ruined now.

Stop supporting drug cartels, don't eat Mexican avocados.

If Trump closes the border, it will not be his fault. That soley rests on Mexico's refusal to stop illegal migration and Democrats refusing to even acknowledge there is a crisis at our border.
The house is on fire and Democrats won't even allow access to the fire hydrant.

Why are you prejudiced against guacamole?

I love guacamole.

But it's a fact that South American drug cartels have diversified, and gunned their way into various farming industries, same as the mafia did with olive oil.

Ceviche. Had shrimp/scallops ceviche Saturday, and the avocado slices really made it.

From WebMD:

Avocado is a tree. The fruit, a popular food, is a good source of potassium and healthy fats. The fruit, leaves, and seeds are used to make medicine.

Avocado fruit is used to lower cholesterol levels, decrease hunger, to increase sexual desire, and stimulate menstrual flow. The seeds, leaves, and bark are used for dysentery and diarrhea.

Avocado oil is applied directly to the skin to soothe and heal skin and to treat thickening (sclerosis) of the skin, gum infections (pyorrhea), and arthritis. Avocado oil is used in combination with vitamin B12 for a skin condition called psoriasis. The fruit pulp is used topically to promote hair growth and speed wound healing. The seeds, leaves, and bark are used to relieve toothache. Avocado: Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, Dosage, and Warning

From Popular Science: "Avocado husks contain lauric acid, butylated hydroxytoluene, and docosanol, which is already sold as an antiviral drug under the brand name Abreva." You’re throwing away the healthiest part of the avocado | Popular Science

"Certain varieties, such as the Hass, have a tendency to bear well only in alternate years. After a season with a low yield, due to factors such as cold (which the avocado does not tolerate well), the trees tend to produce abundantly the next season. This heavy crop depletes stored carbohydrates, resulting in a reduced yield the following season, and thus the alternate bearing pattern becomes established." Of course it's a bluff, why else do people think otherwise? The guy whose companies hire illegal immigrants actually caring about illegal immigration? GTFO

You've never managed a mid-size to big business before have you?

The mindset that the CEO is involved in day to day decisions is interesting....misguided and completely inaccurate...but interesting.

Ketogenic diet. It's also added to a large variety of salads and is used as a burger topping, along with a plethora of Mexican foods.

Not having avocados is likely the least of the repercussions.

Oh that does it for me! No way Jose. I'll gladly trade my country for a frikk'in fruit mal formed with a pit the size of a golf ball.

Turkey sandwiches, all kinds of salads, mixed with chicken salad and some corn and beans, on toast, etc. We eat a lot of them and use them to make guacamole maybe 1/4 the time, if that.

If it's such a NATIONAL EMERGENCY to someone, you might think they would take more of an interest in those type of day to day decisions to make sure not one illegal immigrant got hired. But it doesn't really matter to some, does it?

You are all over the map here aren't you, why would it be a national emergency to a private CEO? You realize that's what you inferred when you said this right "The guy whose companies hire illegal immigrants actually caring about illegal immigration? GTFO"

Now you want to change it to National Emergency status? LOL

Seems like you might be in over your head...
