America is a nation desperate to believe they remain a just and moral people even as they carry out unjust and immoral wars upon other nations. Those (far too many) Americans who lack the courage to stand up to a government gone wrong are grasping at any symbol that allows them to pretend they remain decent human beings. They won't oppose the violence in Iraq, so they scream about violence on TV. They cannot face up to the reality of torture of innocent victims so they complain about"decency"in movies. They bash gays. They demand evolution mythology replace science on the schools. They scream for the Ten Commandments to be displayed in the offices of government while blind to that government's violation of those same commandments. And, of course, they scream for Terri Schiavo to prove to the world (and themselves) that they really do care about every single human life, despite having sat in silence while hundreds of thousands of people were killed and the survivors showered with radioactive waste in wars started with lies and deceptions. If hypocrisy were an Olympic event, America would take home the gold, silver, AND bronze!" -- Michael Rivero

The above is a quote from Michael Rivero who operates a site called WRH (What Really Happened) and I found this thought of the day interesting debate material

your thoughts?

Nah..........

If hyperbole were an Olympic event, Mr. Rivero would take home the Gold, Silver and the Bronze.

So many people in this country are content just to be fed, and are happy as long as the money supply continues, that they don't really even consider the implications you are talking about. Just sayin.....

Which event does this refer to? What were the lies and deceptions?

I can't say I find this analysis to be 100% wrong. However, the implication that this is all Americans as opposed to a vocal minority seems very false.

LOL, you just dismiss it and think it has no validity or objectiveness? You have nothing more to say about it?

I already gave it more attention than it deserved.

You just don't get it.

We're America, we can do whatever we damn well please.

It's the same kind of pap which has been recycled for more than 100 years.

That's the problem, isn't it? American exceptionalism used to be a America proving that it did things better. Now it's America insisting that it still does things better despite the proof not being there anymore. If we're going to claim to be leaders in this world, we should really start acting like it. We still hold up WW2 as proof of our superiority. It's been almost 70 years. We're slipping. We've been slipping for decades. Living in denial about it is not going to save us. We're no longer the world leaders in progressive thought. We are not the nation that most embodies liberty and equality. We are not world leaders in health, education, or even social mobility. Half of our pioneers in science and technology aren't US citizens.

There's a lot better we could be doing, but we pretend that we're magically the best of all possible nations without living up to that boast.

We just landed a massive rover on Mars.

The greatest engineering achievement of our lifetime, maybe the greatest yet.

Still pretty damn exceptional.

I was with you until you sounded like an english major.

Nah. Landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth outshines that. It's not like Curiosity was the first probe landed on Mars. As for massive, it's 2.6% moreso than Viking.

Mostly a matter of opinion.

Mars is significantly further, IMO, makes it far hard engineering wise. The moon has hardly any gravity, so getting off is less complicated than getting off the Earth. Viking landing method was inflated balloons and bouncing. Curiosity used an extremely complex pre-programmed sequence. Significantly more difficult, and significantly more risky.

The Viking lander weighed 600kg. Curiosity weighed 900kg. Significantly more than 2.6%.

You're right; I was looking at the total mass, not just the lander.

But yes, a matter of opinion.

Is that a requirement? To sound like an English major?

Making loose and symbolic linkages without the standard of proof? Certainly.

Mr. Rivero needs to comprehend something.....

More and more Americans are beginning to understand that the value of an American life, and the price necessary to pay for the death of an American is infinitely more than the life of any foreigner is worth.
