Altered mural fuels racial debate in Prescott

Hahaha, ok ok I can end any kind of debate over this before it even starts. I lived in Prescott Arizona for the last 4 years, I've been going to college there since 2006. I've driven by this thing and let me tell you it looks weird as hell from the street, and honestly the kids face was too dark because of the shade over the upper part of the painting and the kid's very bright eyes. So when you drove past it would kinda look like two bright eyes coming out of a very dark and almost "evil" looking face, it also kind of looked like "blackface," either way it honestly looked weird as hell and just seemed like bad art.

As for the people shouting racial slurs, well I could see that happening among some of those individuals. Prescott, and nearby Prescott Valley and Chino, have some serious red-neckitude among some individuals.

That's the ticket!
Fight racial slander with more racial slander!

Rednecks are a race?

And niggers are a race?
No - it's a racial slur for black people.

Red-Neck is a racial slur for white people. Same with cracker and honky.

Theres a difference though. Redneck is a subculture and those other epithets are more directed generally towards a race.

Subculture of what? White Racists? Small white southern town inhabitants?

I've been called a redneck simply because I live in a small town in the south - I've never uttered a racist comment in my life or harbored a racist thought. . . .and I don't like it just as much as I don't like it when others use the term 'wetback' to describe the supposed 'subculture' of people who came here illegally.

The truth of the matter is that 'red-neck' like all other racial slurs, is based on race. You might not see it that way but a lot of other people do see it that way and use it as such.

I was watching the History Channel the other night and saw a program called, 'Hillbilly, The Real Story.'

In it, they claimed the term redneck came from West Virginia unionized coal miners going up against the coal company 'enforcers' wearing red handkerchiefs around their necks to identify themselves

Other theories:

...working class having a red neck caused by working outdoors in the sunlight

...originating in 17th century Virginia, when indentured servants were sunburnt while tending plantation crops

...from Scotland signing documents - in blood - stating that Scotland desired a Presbyterian Church Government, and rejected the Church of England as their official church. Many began wearing red pieces of cloth around their neck to signify their stance. Some of these Scots immigrated to the southern U.S., eventually evolving into southern rednecks.

Yeah "red neck" is a word referring to, typically, ignorant southern racist poor white people. I'm not sure calling it a "racial slur" is accurate.

Rednecks are a race?

Rednecks are white. That makes as much sense as asking if niggers are a race. Or, if kikes are a race.

God save us from political correctness!

The same logic could be applied to, "nigger".

For racism to end, so does the double standard.

Is anyone surprised Deuce cannot understand how Redneck is a racial slur? Sometimes, all we need to do is wait for you to post and you pwn yourself.

Regardless. Its a cultural slur, not a racial one.

OK, no redneckitude, despite the fact that the man on the city council, who wants the mural removed, refers openly to Hispanics as taco flippers, and who complains that diversity is being shoved down the throats of white people. He is also angry that the black kid in the mural is the largest figure.

Just changed my mind. redneckitude it is.

The next time an hispanic, or black person says something stupid are you going to call it, "spickitude"? Or, "niggertude"? I'm betting, uh, no!

Vive la Double Standard!!!!

You've seen the term frequently used to refer to non-whites? I never have.

That is not relevant. Cultures often have a racial component.

Nigger is more equivalent to honkey or cracker as that tends to refer to all white people.

Show me a few instances of the word redneck not referring to whites, especially southern whites. Thanks in advance.

When some says redneck, people automatically think, "white". Anyone that says otherwise is a liein' ass.

I never claimed that it wasn't adpst. I claimed that it did not matter. Please try to understand my argument.

Stop cultivating the Liberal double standard and see the word for the racial slur that it is.

Its not a double standard. Redneck is directed towards a group of people who share a certain common culture. This culture is usually rural and poor to lower middle class, along with other common elements, such as an affinity to country music, and a love of hunting and/or farming. I agree that one of the features of this subculture are that these people tend to be white. Another common element of this culture is racism.

However, in this case, the charge of redneckitude was directed towards the racism of this culture and how that racism is undesirable to other elements of society.

This is pretty cut and dry.

And, they're all white. Get a grip, sir!

Racism exists in every culture. Please, don't act as if it doesn't. Wanna see some real racism? Get a group of black dudes started on Mexicans, or Vietnamese. Then, you'll know what racism really is.

I'll be so glad when political correctness dies the death that it deserves.

Wow I actually agree with apdst on this one. Redneck is a word used to portray rural southerners as stupid, inbred freaks. It is an attack on poor southern rural workers and its use should be condemned.

I'll be so glad when political correctness dies the death that it deserves.

I agree that political correctness has reached a ridiculous point but I don't think it's correct or reasonable to put white racism on an equal level as racism by minorities.

Yes, they are white, but again, that is not relevant because the charge in this case was not directed towards their whiteness, but their racism. As I mentioned, racism is common in this culture. Really though, you are overreacting and not looking at this issue for what it actually is.
