[Alaska] Alaska cancels snow crab season for first time after population collapses

The fact of the matter is China is devastating seafood production by overfishing everywhere they can, with zero regard for the consequences, and no one is doing a damn thing about it.
China is not the only country we catch fishing illegally in Alaskan waters. Canada is the biggest repeat offender, with Japan and Russia also included.

When we encounter them their vessels are seized and sold at public auction.

If they go out and completely destroy the crab population they won't have an income for possibly decades rather than just stutting down for a year or two.
It can be a pain in the ass when they close a fishery, but knowing the purpose for doing so is to strengthen the existing population, whether it is crab, salmon, or some other species, makes it worth the inconvenience. There are other fisheries. They may take longer to reach and end up costing fisherman more, but a closed fishery does not mean fisherman cannot continue to earn a living. There are several dozen of fisheries all over Alaska.
