Al Gore’s Personal Energy Use Is His Own “Inconvenient Truth”

Glad you've jumped on the good guys side Stinger. Funny approach but it's great to see people buying even $3 worth of offsets. I provided the link for talloulou a few posts back.

Better yet you send me some money and I'll send you a frame certificate for 10 carbon offsets.

I thought American Forests was especially useful. They'll plant a tree for $1. It looks like I can erase my entire annual carbon footprint for a mere $60. If everyone did that, I hardly think it would bankrupt the US economy.

Tell you what send it to me and I'll plant an acorn for you. But why doesn't Gore send them money AND cut down on his energy usage and can you provide proof he has done so?

And are you interested in some swampland I can post some site for that too. Or better yet I can post some where you can send some money and the Jesus will love you.

Are you implying the companies listed are fake and/or that purchasing their services will not help remove and individuals carbon foot print?

Not at all, but instead of sending them your money send it to me and then you can feel good about yourself.

Tell you what send it to me and I'll plant an acorn for you.

Thanks, but I think I'd rather trust a reputable "green" non-profit organization, than some random person on the internet who has proven himself to be a mean-spirited liar on nearly every post he makes.

He could just provide more money and it would be the same result. He's one of the few people in the world who is a net carbon reducer, and YOU claim that HE isn't doing enough? How much have YOU done to reduce your carbon?

Typical smear campaign by the right in the US. Baseless, twisted and made up of halftruths.

Funny how the debate is so centered on Gore, and moving over to the Guveonator in California (who turned on Bush on several fronts.. damn liberal!) and the speaker of the house (if you watch Fox, which of course is leading the charge), and yet there is zero mention of how much the Bush and Cheney use when they hop around the US, let alone the planet. Nor any mention of how much other right wing politicans use, and what they are doing to limit their emmissions.. oh no I forgot they dont belive there is a problem.

How about some numbers from the 2006 election, where Walker Bush (as calling people by their middle name seems all the fad these days) went hoping around the US helping his buddies in the election? Air Force One aint exactly a small plane, plus the military jets that follow it around are not exactly made with low emmissions or fuel consumption in mind.

Hypocrits.

IMO, all politicians need to be replaced with much improved versions.

The irony is that hypocritical GOPers accuse others of hypocrisy.

What does the GOP have to do with this? We're talking about Gore feeding off of electricity grid like godzilla. Don't change the subject.

Talk of hypocrites......how about Mrs Speaker of the House? Wanting a huge cargo jet to fly her around when the last speaker used a jet three times smaller?

How much emissions would be admitted compared to a small jet....yet liberal claim they care about the environment but only when it doesn't effect them......

I don't quite understand this "Carbon Footprint" thing, so.....

A nice google search for "carbon footprint" yielded the following:

Conservation International - Programs - Climate Change - Carbon Calculator.
Interesting, this thingy says my carbon footprint is 20.4 tons, I can offset it with a donation of $204.00, and there is a nice "Donate now" button right there in a handy location.
Of course, it is somewhat inaccurate because I fit in-between or outside some of the categories.

www.CarbonFootprint.com
Information, and a link to another footprint calculator.

Wikipedia.org - Carbon Footprint

From what I can see of these and other sites related to the subject (except Wikipedia), many of them offer something along the lines of this, closley connected to a "footprint calculator":
An easy way to reduce your impact on global warming. Of course, it’s great to use less gas and electricity. And you can do even more, right here, right now. With just a few clicks, you can calculate and offset your carbon footprint. So what are you waiting for?
It seems like it probably took Gore 5 mins +/- 15 mins (depending on his internet connection speed, how much money he had in digital form, how much he was concentrating on the task, etc.) to offset his carbon footprint.
-----------------------------------------------
And the opposing argument.
Fox News - What's Your Real 'Carbon Footprint'?

www.junkscience.com - The Real Carbon Footprint Calculator

Using this, My result was a page full of data and such explaining carefully how the carbon footprint calculators are highly inaccurate and why it doesn't matter anyway.
Link

So...........from what I can tell, a decision has yet to be made as to if a carbon footprint offset has any positive (or negative) effect whatsoever.

some random person on the internet who has proven himself to be a mean-spirited liar on nearly every post he makes.

Thanks for proving you can't support your position on it's merits.

Yes hasn't Gore created a nice little racket, use all the energy you want, make a tax-free donation to one of your favorite political non-profits, which also supports your movie and book and declare yourself the annoited and then watch the disciples as they rally to defend your little game.

And people fall for it.

It's simple he could support his non-profits AND then do as he preaches at everyone else and cut his energy use by 10.

“You do understand he uses green energy and that his house leaves no carbon footprint unlike yours right?”

Oh pleazzze. No carbon footprint? Green energy my arse. And how the hell do you know what I use or anyone else for that matter?

“He's asking us to use green sources of energy. If we can't do that to watch the way we use energy that can damage the environment. He's made sure his house doesn’t damage the environment and whatever damage he's doing he's trying to balance it out by doing his bit in helping nature(buying offsets).”

And how does he travel? What modes of transportation does he use? Private jets, limos….using what kind of fuel? You think he goes on the commercial jet carriers that the public uses?

“My question still stands Can any of the people on the forum say the same thing? Can anybody here who criticizes Gore say they are in any position to criticize somebody who's acknowledged the fact that they themselves aren’t free of sin when it comes to polluting and has decided to act on it? I really doubt it. Spin it anyway you want.’”

How do you know what anyone here uses? You just blindly believe everything Gore says just because he is a high profile celebrity? I am not saying that everyone does not pollute the atmosphere because we do. and we all could do our share to help. BUT HE DOES AS WELL.

What does the election have to do with this issue? And I think the acting president of the United States needs protection, Gore does not. BUT I bet he has it. Maybe not access to Air Force One….but he has an entorage of suck ups and people who want to just clamp on to a free meal ticket.
The issue here is Gore and the facts that have surfaced about his own habits regarding this issue.

And he stands at the"pulpit" at the Academy Awards and speaks to the choir of people you know will not take heed in what he says.
They are the true hycocrites.

And who says everything he has come out with is completely accurate. Because he makes this documentary and he is who he is?
I am sure there are scientists that dispute everything he says.

Heck 10 years ago I remember we had global cooooooling.......now the tide turns and we have global warming. What will it be in ten more years.

I don't believe any of them. Some wannabe president, now a hollywood star, is not believeable or respectable to me.

You have a documentary made by the top scientists in their fields stand up and talk about this, I'll listen. But Gore, no way.

He is NOT A MAN OF HIS WORD. He knows where his bread is buttered.

Example: Gore Pro-Life

“It is my deep personal conviction that abortion is wrong. I hope that some day we will see the current outrageously large number of abortions drop sharply. . . . Let me assure you that I share your belief that innocent human life must be protected . . .” (Letter from Rep. Al Gore to a Constituent, 7/18/84)

"On June 26, 1984, Representative Al Gore cast an extremely pro-life vote. While debating the Civil Rights Act of 1984, Representative Siljander proposed the following amendment.

"For the purposes of this act, the term 'person' shall include unborn children from the moment of conception."

After debate, Mr. Siljander demanded a recorded vote. The amendment was defeated 219 to 186. Among the recorded votes for the amendment was that of Al Gore.

Contrary to Al Gore's current campaign statements, this amendment cannot be counted among those distinguished as votes only against federal funding. This amendment was in direct opposition to Roe v Wade.

The text of the amendment, the debate, and the recorded vote can be found in the Congressional Record, Volume 130, Part 14, pages 18865-18870. "

Al Gore's Reversal on Abortion

He changed his tune when he ran for public office. So much for his convictions eh?

He is a man who simply wants attention and can't get enough of it.

I have not seen this documentary yet and I plan to watch it. I need to study what scientists say about this issue.

Any good links, books that you know of?

Cheney and Bush aren't exactly telling everyone to do their part to save the planet are they? Are their emissions bad? Certainly. But at least they don't have the do as I say not as I do attitude of Mr. Gore.

I already posted a link from Time Magazine that explained it. For some reason people who dont believe in Global Warming don't strike me as the type that would use Green Energy. It's like an oxymoron if you catch my drift.

Sweetpie. Thats WHY he purchases carbon offsets.

See my rebutal to your first point. And he is doing something to balance out the damage he does. Installing solar panels, using methane and wind power and buying carbon offsets to balance out the carbon footprint he's leaving behind.

I think the problem here is that conservatives are so thirsty for blood they're not even attacking what they call the hypocrisy of conservationists. They're attacking Al Gore as a person. It's personal for them I guess.

When I look at a person who is trying to teach me something, I first look at who the person is. Are they credible. I look at Gore and his past history in politics and how he has stood on the issues and they are not honorable IMO. I gave you one example, his position on abortion and how it changed all of a sudden when he ran for public office. I do not find the man credible.

It did not help that he showed up at the academy awards with all those self-puffed up people and insinuate that America change their lifestyles when we all know that no one in Hollywood will do the same.

This should not be an issue where Repubicans or Democrats are divided. We should all want better for our planet.
I just do not find Gore credible.

As I said I am going to watch the documentary and I will study the issue. Don't know much about it.

As for Gore........I just do not like him.

Not true at all. Depends on what you mean by "global warming." I haven't bought in to all the end of times hype and I'm not by any means convinced that we cause climate change or that we can alter climate change but I favor green energy and anything that helps cut pollution.

See my rebutal to your first point. And he is doing something to balance out the damage he does. Installing solar panels, using methane and wind power and buying carbon offsets to balance out the carbon footprint he's leaving behind.
I'm don't believe buying carbon offsets does "balance out" the footprint one leaves behind.

The difference is you don't have these "right wing" politicians telling everyone else how to live. When you tell people to live one way and you live in a completely different manner, that is hypocrisy. Some of us are simply calling him on it.

Personally, I am a Global Warming skeptic (agnostic if you will), but I try to reduce my pollution output because of the great concern I have for the real spectre of ground/low elevation pollution that affects my city and many others in Asia.

To be a "global warming skeptic" is to ignore the overwhelming evidence. There are NO scientists who seriously dispute the basic premise of global warming, and there are very few who seriously dispute the fact that humans are causing it.

Global Warming Petition
We urge the United States government to reject the global warming agreement that was written in Kyoto, Japan in December, 1997, and any other similar proposals. The proposed limits on greenhouse gases would harm the environment, hinder the advance of science and technology, and damage the health and welfare of mankind. There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gasses is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and disruption of the Earth's climate. Moreover, there is substantial scientific evidence that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide produce many beneficial effects upon the natural plant and animal environments of the Earth.

Carbon offset - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some näive tree planting strategies have taken only the first effect into account. A study published in December 2005 combined all these effects and found that tropical forestation has a large net cooling effect, because of increased cloudiness and because of high tropical growth and sequestration rates.[5] Trees grow three times faster in the tropics than in temperate zones; each tree in the rainy tropics removes about 22 kilograms (50 pounds) of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere each year.[6] However, this study found little to no net global cooling from tree planting in temperate climates, where warming due to sunlight absorption by trees counteracts the global cooling effect of carbon sequestration. Furthermore, this study confirmed earlier findings that reforestation of colder regions—where long periods of snow cover, evergreen trees, and slow seqestration rates prevail—results in global warming.
To plant forests outside of the tropics to mitigate climate change is a waste of time,

so how many trees does Gore need to plant in order to offset his massive fuel usage?
