After this, America really needs to talk about wages and worker protections

It is a simple cost of living adjustment. We should not be subsidizing capitalists with "cheap labor" in our first world economy.

Do you not understand? Go ahead, make the minimum wage $30/hr and those people are just unemployed rather than paid a wage lower than makes you feel better. US business cannot be globally competitive with unsustainable wages. This ain't 1954 anymore where we are the only game in town. Look at how much GM/Ford struggle because their cars have about $2-3k of additional labor costs compared to Jap/Korean cars.

Henry Ford doubled autoworker wages not minimum wages.

Unemployment compensation for merely being unemployed on an at-will basis in our at-will employment States can solve simple poverty in a market friendly manner. We wouldn't need a statutory minimum wage then; but, even if it were raised to thirty dollars an hour, capitalists would need to consider automating for the bottom line.

Republicans are very well known for ordering people to go shopping, and having hissy fits when they don't obey.

The thing is, maybe they are RIGHT when they voice fears that we might scuttle the economy in order to win.
And that is a damn shame...but not for the reason you might think.
It's a damn shame that we've become so powerless as a society that we're reduced to the point where that really IS the only power that we have remaining.

What are they going to do, arrest people if they DON'T go shopping?
Do we really have to do a counter-move to the ultimate Trump hostage taking drama?
Maybe we do. As much as it hurts, maybe we do, because no matter what, we are going to get [censored] and badly.

The "company store".

Yeah you know why the cost of living is going up?

Government.

So you want the government to solve a problem they created in the first place?

Why do you think housing is so expensive? It’s because there’s a deep state of building regulators who do nothing but pass new rules to justify their existence and so in my state you need to have a house inspected 17 times during construction (while paying the county 150 dollars an hour for each multi hour inspection) whereas that used to be done by the builder.

You do realize that the situation you are talking about came about because the builders were shirking the responsibility of making sure ****ing houses were safe for people to live in in the name of saving a few pennies, don't you? Cut a corner and then sign off on it as good.....sounds like a wonderful plan, right? Simple fact is that almost every government agency you are vilifying came into existence because the free market didn't do what it is you claim they would willingly do. When left to its own devices, it will do what is in the best interest of profit margin, not what is in the best interest of society as a whole, which could be the difference between houses having allergen free aluminum duct work and ****ing asbestos everywhere because its cheaper.

Wash, rinse and repeat for virtually every industry that has an agency that overlooks it.

We should not bail out the cruise ship industry - below is from an article I read

If you are going to start bailing out corporations, perhaps you should start with the ones that meet the following criteria
1. They are an American company
2. They hire Americans
3. They pay Federal taxes

Just a thought.

Boeing got their carve-out. Management remains the same. Maybe they'll vote themselves a bonus. Boeing has been taking a dive against Airbus for about 4 yrs. They've not been able to compete and have lied their way through safety mishap. C-19 is saving them.

A lot of inaccuracies in this one. Airbus has been generally getting their ass handed to them by Boeing for the last 20 years with the exception of the 737-Max issues. The Max is a debacle, but it will sort itself out and then Boeing will be golden again. The 787 is also a great product. More importantly, Boeing isn't going to be allowed to go bankrupt because of their role in the economy (largest US exporter, huge employer) and the fact that they are a huge defense supplier.

And now that Boeing completely and perhaps criminally hid the facts of the 737 safety hazard, even to the pilots they hid operational facts, they are rightly having their ass handed to them, a should be. Remember the mantra "safety first"? Well, at Boeing they say "We value human life and well-being above all else and take action accordingly. We are personally accountable for our own safety and collectively responsible for the safety of our teammates and workplaces, our products and services, and the customers who depend on them. When it comes to safety, there are no competing priorities." I have no sympathy nor am going to pretend apologist for Boeing.

Yeah, Boeing gets 31%+ of it's revenue from govt contracts, a great deal more than any foreign competitor can possibly get from their own govt., that gives them a competitive edge. Yes, they are "too big to fail" and they often do not pay fed income taxes.
