The market price for oil is the same everywhere, I think that is why they call it market price. They built trains because at the time it made sense for them. You can't point to any pair of any cities of size in either Asia or Europe that don't have a flight going between them. Thrive is a relative value. How will we ever become a top tier member of the international community without high speed trains? If France and Japan have them then we should have one. It's freaking embarrassing that Uzbekistan has high speed rail and we don't.

There's always the possibility that private investors may attempt to build a set of systems between pairs of cities, which could ultimately be interconnected. Some countries have had to do it piecemeal in similar fashion.
This much I do know...air travel between LA-SF is becoming increasingly strangled and time consuming for the prices charged, and automobile traffic arteries between the two cities are about as advanced as they're going to get.

At some point this will become a larger bottleneck than it already is today.

I have taken high speed rails in many economically developed countries- from Japan to a number of European countries like France, Germany, and Switzerland. Amazingly fast, efficient, clean, and luxurious. How come everyone else can do it except us? Why can't we have nice things here in America?
