Gov. Newsom ending high-speed rail project between SF, LA

California Gov. Newsom ending high-speed rail plan between SF, LA | abc7news.com
California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced Tuesday he's abandoning a plan to build a high-speed rail line between Los Angeles and San Francisco, a project with an estimated cost that has ballooned to $77 billion. "Let's be real," Newsom said in his first State of the State address. "The current project, as planned, would cost too much and respectfully take too long. There's been too little oversight and not enough transparency." The idea long championed by Newsom's predecessor, Jerry Brown, is years behind schedule. The latest estimate for completion is 2033.
But Newsom's speech went beyond immigration and other disagreements with the White House to his own ambitious policy goals for the state. Newsom has laid out his vision for California twice already, in his inaugural address and through his first crack at the state budget. He spent his first month in office traveling to different parts of the state promoting his ideas on housing, juvenile justice and the environment.

Like the "Big Dig" This was a graft-filled boondoggle from How many billions have already been spent on this boondoggle? How many billions have already been stolen? Perhaps they got their fill, now they want to shut it down before there’s an audit.the beginning. Originally supposed to be $10 Billion over 10 years, with gizmos and door-to-door service. Yet another in the long list of Democrat politically-correct Boondoggles.
Whoops, what does he expect people to use - cars, airplanes? Better check with AOC first! You've got to wonder how many billions they flushed down that rat-hole.
So Newsome wasn’t included in the graft kickback scheme for this project.
“Let’s be real,” Newsom said in his first State of the State address. “The current project, as planned, would cost too much and respectfully take too long. There’s been too little oversight and not enough transparency.”
Who would have thought a radical left winger from SF would be the one to exercise the sense to end this folly. Newsome is still a vapid deranged out of touch with reality fool but even the worst among us occasionally experiences periods of lucidity.
I'm sure that Gavin's aunt Nancy will help him as much as she can.

I heard it was something like $117,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,452,000,000.00

Someone just got removed from the Obama's Christmas list. Trains are the future!

trains are the present, unfortunately the US didn't invest since we used our military to secure cheaper gas and oil than other countries, who had to build rail infrastructure. I'ts only seems massive now because we have done no work and are way behind on having high speed rails that are thriving in Europe and Asia

The market price for oil is the same everywhere, I think that is why they call it market price. They built trains because at the time it made sense for them. You can't point to any pair of any cities of size in either Asia or Europe that don't have a flight going between them. Thrive is a relative value. Are there any trains that are self-sustaining without government assistance?

Well, anyone who wants to use this statement against me in the future can copy it now for future use: On this count, Governor Newsom made the correct and responsible decision and should be applauded for it. Thank you for not mortgaging the future of California's as-yet unborn children and grandchildren to fund this over-bloated, under-researched money pit.

How will we ever become a top tier member of the international community without high speed trains? If France and Japan have them then we should have one. It's freaking embarrassing that Uzbekistan has high speed rail and we don't.

Damn it! If Trump would lay off this border funding and get us some high speed rail we could ship all those political refugees from Guatemala up to the bay area a whole lot quicker and in respectable style.

Maybe instead of a wall we should build a high speed rail along the southern border.

You don't know the story of the High Speed (not really) Rail (to nowhere) project...

Newsom said the state will complete a 110-mile (177 km) high-speed rail link between Merced and Bakersfield. In March 2018, the state forecast the costs had jumped by $13 billion to $77 billion and warned that the costs could be as much as $98.1 billion.

Good decision. Cost overruns were ridiculous.

His second good decision this week. Yesterday he ordered the California National Guard home from its border duties under Brown.

There's always the possibility that private investors may attempt to build a set of systems between pairs of cities, which could ultimately be interconnected. Some countries have had to do it piecemeal in similar fashion.
This much I do know...air travel between LA-SF is becoming increasingly strangled and time consuming for the prices charged, and automobile traffic arteries between the two cities are about as advanced as they're going to get.

At some point this will become a larger bottleneck than it already is today.
Boston's Big Dig, say what you want about it, eventually became a working traffic artery.

Heh! The great step forward... trains?

Rahm Emanuel got hit in the face with budget realities when he went to Chicago, and Newsome is being hit in the face by budget realities himself. It is always encouraging to seen hair-on-fire leftist radicals being confronted with reality at some point down their leftist socialist road to destruction.

I have taken high speed rails in many economically developed countries- from Japan to a number of European countries like France, Germany, and Switzerland. Amazingly fast, efficient, clean, and luxurious. How come everyone else can do it except us? Why can't we have nice things here in America?

Seems the feds already contributed to a lost cause rail system
"Developing the first segment of the Initial Operating Section (IOS) from Madera to Bakersfield will cost $6 billion, consisting of $3.3 billion in federal funding and $2.6 billion in Proposition 1A bond proceeds. The remaining portions of the IOS will be funded using state bonds, federal support, and local funds. Cap and Trade funds are also available as needed, upon appropriation, as a backstop against federal and local support to complete the IOS. "

Sadly we've already wasted far more on the high speed rail debacle than we will ever spend on a wall.
