That figure is about right.

During 2006, Tax Foundation economists estimate that roughly 43.4 million tax returns, representing 91 million individuals, will face a zero or negative tax liability. That's out of a total of 136 million federal tax returns that will be filed. Adding to this figure the 15 million households and individuals who file no tax return at all, roughly 121 million Americans—or 41 percent of the U.S. population—will be completely outside the federal income tax system in 2006.1 This total includes those who pay no tax, and those who pay some tax upfront and are later refunded the full amount of the tax paid or more.

That's actually a good question. Millions of working Americans don't pay income tax (though they pay SS/medicare taxes).

This consideration is why it was a lie for the Bush tax supporters to say that all working Americans got a tax break under the Bush tax cuts.

It also makes you wonder how McCain's health plan, providing a tax credit, is going to help these scores of millions when they don't pay any taxes.

Could be EITC, which is a little different from classic welfare because you have to work and earn income to get it, I think.

While the number is questionable, there can be no doubt that part of those 95% who do not make enough to pay taxes, will not get a decrease.

This does not change the fact that he will only be raising taxes on 5% of the population.
People that make so much that they can easilly afford to provide more help.
Especially when even the middle class is hurting and needs that help.

Socialism does work. It just depends on your view of how society should run. The Nordic states are all welfare socialist states that are not exactly 'failing.' That said, full blown cradle to grave socialism has its down sides. Furthermore, Socialism is alive and well in America and has been propagated by both parties.

Like public schools? Socialism
Like the US highway system? Socialism

As for being a Marxist,

Has Obama called for the overthrow of the class system for a democracy of the worker? Has Obama called for disengagement from the free trade world (The leaked harper memo shows his public statements on NAFTA are a lie)? Has Obama called for central planning of the US economy? Has Obama called for 5 year plans? Has Obama called for collectivization? Has Obama called for a one political party state? Has Obama called for the dissolution of the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches? Has Obama called for the overthrow of the middle class?

Or do you not know what Marx wrote and throw that term around hoping no one will call you on your bull****?

Come again? Do you have evidence that the lobby money from Fannie and Freddie went into Obama's personal bank account? Last I checked, Obama's tax returns which did NOT get audited showed no such money.

I agree. For the reason you state, raising the rate equivalently on folks making more than $250k doesnt make sense.

Those making $2.5m should pay a higher rates than those making $250k. And those making $25m a higher rate still.

I don't know how I feel about that. Someone making $25m can afford a bit more in taxes, I guess. But those making $25K think those making $250K should pay more.
