A Plea To The Partisans

Do you pledge to give the next president a chance, no matter who it is?

In a few weeks, either McCain or Obama will be elected President Of The United States Of America. Let's face it, about half of the people here are going to fundamentally disagree with whoever wins.

This is what I ask of the board. Whether Obama wins, or McCain wins, give the man a fair chance. Both of them love this country and want to make it a better place, they just disagree on how. Give him a chance to try to help this country, give him a chance to try to repair the economy, give his policies a chance to work. Don't start attacking him immediately off the bat. Don't assume his policies are going to fail, or that he doesn't have your best interest at heart. Both candidates deserve at least that.

Now I know many on the right are itching to get back at the left for their treatment of George Bush. You are probably right, Bush was treated roughly, right off the bat. But treating Obama the same way won't make it any better, all it will do is mire the country in bickering and squabbling, when we have very real problems that need to be solved. As for the left, do I even have to remind you about the Clinton years? Do I even have to remind you how Clinton was demonized? I'm sure those of you that were paying attention back then didn't like it one bit. It was pretty unfair. So why do you want to do that to someone else?

I guess what I'm trying to say here is, give the next president a chance, no matter who he is. Who is with me?

I turned on Bush when it was clear that he was a liberal in conservative clothing. If Obama gets elected and can effectively reverse the liberal spending and expansion of government we've seen from most of the congressional Democrats and Republicans over the past 8 years, he'll have my (probably tentative ;) ) support.

But whoever becomes President is our President and while we may criticize his actions, I still won't appreciate foreigners spouting off about him. If right wing Europeans criticize a President Obama, call him a retard, etc. like the left wing morons did to President Bush - I'll still have the overwhelming desire to shove my foot up their ass.
 
I will respect the office as I allways have.

Whoever is President I will be critical of. I will call them on their bull**** and speak freely about it. And I will give credit where credit is due.

So basically no, you will only give whoever is President your support if they follow policies that you support.

Just trying to clear your position for myself.

I have no problem with Americans giving their opinion of European, African or Asian leaders or events - why should you mind if we have an opinion on your events - especially when your leader is set up as "leader of the free world".

Either the US goes into isolation and lets the world run or fall apart or you get involved and have a say. When your country chooses to have a say in foreign events you affect us and we have a right to voice our opinion.
 
I view the president as being the representative of the people and the standard bearer of the republic. I will always respect the office of the president, no matter who holds the office because I respect my fellow citizens.

What bothered me about Bush's treatment was that it was patently disrespectful to the citizens who voted for him. I will not do the same thing to the Obamaheads if they get their boy elected.

But since he isn't president yet, I probably ought to get my disdain and scorn for him out of my system now. ;)

Well, you'll understand how I feel when an American (it has happened on these forums) who has never been to Europe tells me that Muslims have taken over the UK or that "Londonistan" is happening, or that our Nahtional Health systems over here are... "socialist".

However, I tend to restrain violent urges and prefer to ask for clarification. Maybe that would help you with your foot and bottom fetish? :mrgreen:
 
Is this a trick question? We really have no choice in the matter. So, I guess we give whomever a chance to either do good by us or to... screw us over... again.

That's not accurate at all. I expect whoever is President to keep their word. Both McCain and Obama have vowed to eliminate waste and cut funding to government programs that aren't working and improve efficiency. They both have ridiculed the spending of the Congress over the past 8 years and promised change.

If either of them get in and aren't fiscally responsible, they obviously were campaigning based on their own personal ambition rather than to do what is best for our country. At that point, they won't have my support, and shouldn't have the support of any American.

But I thought you respected your fellow citizens?
 
I am still torn on who I am going to vote for, but whomever I do choose to vote for, if he does not win- I would certainly give the other guy the benefit of the doubt and support him. But I do have a point of support and if whoever wins does a complete turn around and messes our **** up even more, I cannot support that person. For example I did not vote for Bush but I did give him the benefit of the doubt. I don't support man, if not all, of his decisions or actions. But I still have respect for him as our president and even though I believe we were wrong to re-elect him, we have to deal with what we got and try and do better this time around.

The problem here is that we pick such candidates that are complete opposite and that caters to the division of our country. We got one guy on the right and one guy on the left and there is no point where they meet. So no matter what, the joe sixpack (:mrgreen:) who supports the one guy seems to have a hatred of the other guy and I don't know what it will take to unite the two parties at this point.
 
So we shouldn't call the president a drunken cocaine addict? We shouldn't say that he was selected and not elected? What about murderer? Should we not call him a murderer? I'm gonna try to not call the president a stupid redneck. Or Chimpy.

Do we need any sort of proof if we call the president a liar? Or do we just go by gut hunch? But if we call the president a liar without proof that makes us patriotic. I want to be patriot so maybe I'll play it safe and just go ahead and call him a liar.

Are all natural and man made disasters not the fault of the next president? Or should we blame him? I won't blame the next president for volcanoes, but all storms are caused by global warming which is the fault of only one person on this planet.

If the new president doesn't sign Kyoto I don't know that I can remain civil. Just because the whole world changed its mind about Kyoto won't excuse our president.

I will treat the next president with all the respect that our current president has recieved. Count on it.

If you'd bothered to read instead of being obtuse and dim, you would have noticed that I gave elevated status to the presidency, something your boy doesn't have until he gets elected despite your desire to measure drapes for the White House before we even vote.

When/if he becomes President, I will give him the same respect I gave Bush and Clinton before him and Bush before him and so on. Until then, you Obamaheads are just going to have to deal with the fact that I don't much care for your messiah.

This is one of the things I don't "get" yet with a Presidential / Federal system. Your congress was where the laws made recently to pass the $700Billion bail-out were not just the actions of the President. Who makes the bills or sets up the spending targets in your system and what checks and balances exist?

Or maybe what I'm trying to ask is - is the President the sole person responsible for fiscal responsibility or irresponsibility in your system of govt?
