That's the part that the right-wing seems to miss. Most of these people applied for their green card, but currently on expired visas. If they left the country, their application would go to the bottom of the pile again.

No. That's not what Gingle Ale was saying. A lot of the illegal immigrants in the U.S today came here on temporary visas and applied for green card status while living in the U.S. They did not go back to their "mother country" because it would require them to restart their application again.

Biden is proposing what has already been proposed in the past -- illegals have to go through a pathway program. They can only become citizens or green card holders, IF they pass all the steps and pay restitution.

Just for the record. My view on immigration is relatively moderate and possibly right-leaning. I do not believe the U.S should be the welfare capital of the world and has no obligation to take everybody who applied for a visa or green card. We have every right to determine who should or shouldn't be in America. Immigrants who do not respect our laws, shouldn't be given special treatment. I am sympathetic to the Dreamers. If you were forced to come here as a child or minor, you should be given a pathway program.

But at the same time, I do believe in the concept of compromise and finding the middle-ground. The Biden proposal, which is unlikely to pass, comes with updating our border enforcement policies and addresses why people are flocking from Central America to the U.S. Those two aspects are more important to me.

That would be an economic disater. A national unemployment rate does NOT reflect the needs in the jobs market. I believe that a good portion, not all, of immigrants should be merited based and targeted. There are certain industries that are screaming for certain skills and there are simply not the supply to me those demands.
