A call for sanity!

Will someone explain why they have bought up all the toilet paper? Didn't they need it before the virus?

It's a more viable and pliable option than resorting to using bedding and curtains should one be self-quarantined and unable to get out to restock.

I'm fascinated the new right wing talking point is effectively - it's only the old people who die. F**k em. It's about 50 million people in this country.

There's also people with compromised immune systems and are in poor health, so it's not just about age. This whole notion of not taking action to prevent mass spread throughout the country (and everything bad that comes along with it) is really bizarre.

The problem is that these are extra deaths. After corona fades, people will still die falling down stairs. Life was tough in the Middle Ages as well before the plague hit.

life got significantly better for many of the survivors after the kill-off resulting from the plague

labor had been cheap because laborers were both plentiful and abused - before the plague

the beginnings of a middle class of craftspersons immediately ensued the black plague due to the enhanced demand for their services

recognizing that the adverse impact of the tRump virus is principally against the infirm elderly (my cohort), there would be a large number whose health and welfare will not need to be financially subsidized by the remaining population

that is an extremely cold outlook of the prospective after affects, but like the black plague that no one wished for, the world community will be less encumbered for the survivors

yea, i'm going to hell for such ruminations

That's nonsense. Seriously, do you really think the worldwide collapse in the equities markets was caused by fake news? The effectively societal lockdowns in S. Korea, China and Italy because of fake news?

No, but do I think they look upon it as manna from heaven when it comes to furthering their political hatred of Trump? Ya, you betcha.

No doubt. Your philosophical musings, which I assume are tongue in cheek, would have made Malthus proud. Adolf wanted to get rid of the sick as well.

i don't know that thomas m wanted a reduced population, but he was convinced our globe was then at maximum viable capacity
he simply formed a very wrong conclusion from a very limited set of facts

hell, i might be doing the same, but there is no tongue in cheek
it is unfortunate that the older infirm population is most at risk
but realistically, their diminishment due to the tRump flu could have positive long term ramifications for the survivors

that is quite different from the 1919 flu that killed tRump's grandfather
those in their prime were the more frequent victims

So it's rough out there in the grocery stores, people are freaking out. I urge everyone to look at the total number dead and compare that to the regular flu, and adjust by country.

That is not really a particularly intelligent approach as 1) the death rate is not yet established, but appears to be 10-50x that of the flu; 2) the total number of people that may die from this is largely a function of how it spreads, which is problematic as there is much we do not know about how its communicated and 3) the is not yet an antidote nor an understanding of the residual effects of this. The total number of people that died is irrelevant as it hardly a measure of the threat at hand. As a ratio, it helps us establish a degree of urgency of remedying this.

This does not require panic, but is it NOT business as usual. This is a major event and requires some short-term changes in how we conduct ourselves. Approaching this with an abundance of caution is wise in the circumstance.

But we are not Italy and Italy is not blaming Trump for the Coronavirus surge. The democrats are doing that.

So we are clear, Trump is not to blame for the virus being in the country. He is to blame for his anemic response, which was, until last night, an irresponsible response of denial.

Um? What?

According to the CDC 80K Americans died from the flu in 2018. That's about 6666 per month on the average.

CDC: 80,000 people died of flu last winter in the U.S. - STAT

Coronavirus has killed a little over 5000 since December, thats around 1666 per month.

If this virus is 50x more deadly than the flu then the death toll would be 333K according to you...

..math fail.

Nobody, not even the Democrats are blaming Trump for the virus. What people, including Republicans, are blaming him for is his failure to respond intelligently.

He could have left intact the CDC division that deals with epidemics, instead he disbanded it almost entirely. This was the same unit that handled the Ebola virus competently.

It would help if he had not said the epidemic was a hoax.

He could have read or had an expert calmly explain the symptoms and course of the disease and the best thing to do if one was sick. He didn't and now people are reacting in strange ways because they are uniformed

He could have explained why quarantine was necessary. How long it would last. How best to prepare for it

He could have recognized the seriousness sooner and released funding sooner.

He could have made sure the right agencies and manufacturers had masks and tests kits. Having those available doesn't slow the epidemic but not having them looks incompetent and adds to the panic.

South Korea has tested 190,000 people. the US has tested 9,000. Testing should have started sooner

His demeanor has not been helpful, informing, truthful , calming or encouraging.

He could stop telling people he has everything under control when obviously he doesn't.

Oh, you mean the media point out that a reckless, proudly ignorant, lazy, incompetent who surrounds himself with bootlickers and sycophants is predictably doing a disastrous job during a worldwide health crisis?

It's one thing for the SP500 futures market to collapse during Trump's national address (Good job Jared and Stephen!) but for the media to highlight that is just TDS liberal media bias!

No, it's a logic fail by you. We don't even take minimal steps to slow the spread of the flu - no nation does - and so the spread of the flu is widespread every year, across every community in the world. We have vaccines, but many choose not to get vaccinated, and so wherever you live had the flu this year and last and the previous, etc. You might have noticed that several countries have all but shut down to slow/limit the spread of CV19. It was in the news that Trump shut down travel to China weeks ago, and recently shut down travel to 26 countries in Europe.

And you don't have to listen to liberals, but you might pay attention to Trump's point man on the science, Fauci, who testified to Congress that the virus is about 1% or 10X more deadly than the flu. Do you think he's wrong, and if he is, what is the death rate?

yeah i bought 2 big bags of extra toilet paper, among other things.

its simple... having the necessities at home means that if my job tells us to work from home (which a lot are doing here now), i don't have to go anywhere to expose myself to the virus for longer period of time.

I hate to interrupt another episode of Trump derangement syndrome but here is a list of the first countries to ban travel to/from China China travel restrictions over the coronavirus | Fortune and the dates. America was on the earliest 6 Feb 2020 list. We shut it down 2 days earlier then Hong Kong. 2 days before Bangladesh. A day before Taiwan. 2 days before Singapore. 5 days before the Philippines. A day before New Zealand. 4 days before Malaysia. 2 days before Indonesia and 3 days before India. And these are all Asian countries who basically followed America's lead, and Donald Trumps.
Dont you remember? When you Democrats were calling Trump "racist" for doing so?

Exactly what should Trump have done other then what he did with the available information? Cat got your tongue on that one?

He had to ban Europe because European countries in the EU have open borders and anyone can go anywhere at any time. Since 1985 its been a 26 country passport free, no border control open travel zone. So when Italy unhinges and comrade Merkel predicts a 70% infection rate future for Germany, the most populated state in the zone, what else could Trump do but ban travel?

The experts are telling you every day. Based on the moronic postings we see on here, however, there's clearly a part of the media lying to large swaths of the public, and it's disgraceful

Yes, most people do get over it but those efforts you're criticizing are to keep something FAR more contagious than the flu from infecting 100 million or more Americans. We have about 1 million total hospital beds in this country and 100,000 ICU beds, so do some math. Trump's expert told you the death rate is about 1% and the serious illness multiples of that - say 4 or 5 times that. So maybe 5 million seriously ill patients, in a very short time period. How does that work with 1 million total beds, and 100,000 ICU beds? It doesn't.

Assuming good care, that's 1 million dead, and it will collapse our healthcare system dealing with them, and cause lots of other deaths from the normal sick patients who need an ICU bed.

This isn't hard information to find, and people are SCREAMING IT AT ALL OF US. You have to take the simple step of listening.

Don't blame us for your ignorance.

I just blame the left for letting their hate for Trump and America override what’s good for the country. They are not trustworthy.

Bull****! If the coronavirus was 10 times more deadly than the flu then it would be killing 60K people a month! You people are so gullible!

Do the math!

No, but do I think they look upon it as manna from heaven when it comes to furthering their political hatred of Trump? Ya, you betcha.

These clowns (+Romney) would still be calling witnesses in the impeachment trial if they had their way. That is what they care about, damaging Trump for the election. They see this virus as just another opportunity to make political gains. The first thing we heard from them was criticism about Trump, as he was in action and taking important steps, they were doing nothing. You are a true moron, convenient idiot, or just plain hate America if you agree with this fools.

It isn't "the left" spreading lies about the coronavirus. Trump is with an assist by Fox News and other Trump bootlicking propaganda outlets.

There's a reason you didn't address any substantive point in my comment. It's all true, it's backed by what we know of this virus, and you won't accept it and blame Democrats for telling the truth.

Well, who should I believe - you or Dr. Fauci? It's a tough call for me.

But since you are the expert, what is the death rate for those infected? I look forward to hearing from your expertise so I'll know how to plan.

No, we don't remember that happening because it's a made up lie, unless "Democrats" means some idiot troll you can find on Facebook or Twitter. You can't quote any elected Democrats saying that, or Democrats in any kind of national leadership position. I didn't even see it on DP, but you're welcome to find someone saying it and quoting them if you want to make those kinds of allegations. Who said it? What is their name?

Basically Trump is like a little 1st grader who did something good weeks ago and needs constant praise for it, despite all the ways he's failed since.

The good news politically is facts are going to overwhelm this stupid talking point. The bad news is it's going to take an actual disaster with lots of sick and dead to break through. That's always been the problem with the right wing strategy delegitimizing any information that doesn't come from Trump or one of his bootlicking propagandists.

Don't ever let a crisis go to waste, right? Isn't that a Democrat belief? Came out of the Obama White House.

There is never a bad time to point out incompetence and failures by those who we elected to lead us. If that's what you mean, OK.
