She said she was hobbled by her depression and autism and borderline personality disorder. Now she was tired of living—despite, she said, being in love with her boyfriend, a 40-year-old IT programmer, and living in a nice house with their two cats.
Theo Boer, a healthcare ethics professor at Protestant Theological University in Groningen, served for a decade on a euthanasia review board in the Netherlands. “I entered the review committee in 2005, and I was there until 2014,” Boer told me. “In those years, I saw the Dutch euthanasia practice evolve from death being a last resort to death being a default option.” He ultimately resigned.
So much for being reserved for the 'terminally ill'.
Has a bit of Soylent Green ring to it.
I'm not dying, but I want to, because I just cant take it anymore!
No problem, we got you...

I prefer this to her parents having to clean up blood from their bathroom after they find her body.

So it's not just the Dutch that will put you down, Canadians too!

Let's just start putting people down because the McRib is gone and they can't take it. Don't worry, it will be back. Nasty anyway..

The deepest sympathies to her family and friends.

She deserves the right to decide that she wants to leave this VALE OF TEARS.

The mental/physical suffering of some human beings is horrific beyond words.

All American states should allow people to end their lives in a dignified manner.

I'd say we should be careful with this. Some people on the spectrum can get hyper obsessed with things later to move on to a new thing. They could get hyper fixated on their own deaths, and I don't see how we shouldn't just treat the issue, instead of letting them go on with it, there's no return.

But, then again, I only stayed at a Holiday Inn psychology unit last night. I have no real idea.

I am very familiar with those of us on the spectrum tho, and I could see the possible problems with this. I personally don't like it.

I could also see people start encouraging death as an option if say, you couldn't afford treatment, or were a burden. That's not a good fix, IMO.

I remember a story not long ago about a daughter who wanted to kill herself, but couldn't because she loved her parents too much, but she was in enormous pain every day. Her parents decided to kill themselves with her so she could find peace.

With the stigma today against the mentally ill, there often is no other treatments--or the treatments are far more traumatizing.

For the mentally ill, it's a tough haul just to wake up every day, let alone navigate retaining dignity while seeking treatment and attempting to be accepted by the society you exist in. It can be worse than death.

Suicide should not be stigmatized as a shameful, cowardly, or heroic act.
No one should be forced to live.

I just hope there's no pressure because they have mental issues.

Your headline carries the strong implication that the woman is being forced by the state to have her life terminated.

That is incorrect as anyone who had actually read the article would know.

Did you actually read the article and write the inaccurate headline on purpose or did you simply not actually understand what was in the article?

And, of course, you are implying that "autism" and "subnormal intelligence" mean the same thing - right?

A number of countries including Canada allow this even for conditions that aren't terminal.

Not sure why this is news.
It isn't news - BUT it does give the OP a chance to post material where they IMPLY that "the state" is "forcing" the person to have their life ended.

How about treating people instead?
When psychiatry has a statistically significant better chance of "curing" mental illness than an illiterate tribal healer in a tribe that is cut off from civilization does, you may well have a point.

"Doctor, I want to thank you for helping me realize that it doesn't make sense for me to believe that people are out to _[fill in the blank]_ if I don't know why people are out to _[fill in the blank]_. That, however, doesn't change the fact that people ARE out to _[fill in the blank]_ and I'm going out of my mind trying to figure out WHY people are out to _[fill in the blank]_." is (in paraphrase) a not unlikely "psychiatric treatment outcome".

I didn't take it that way at all. I guess if you're looking to bitch about something, you'll find it.

Not for nothing, but it was only news when someone else posted about it?

You know damn well that's not what I meant, but you go with that.
Though euthanasia is 'ending the life of someone through peaceful means at the hands of another', so, technically factual.

Read every word, I did! She will be euthanized.

Just how much 'help' has she received at 28 before resorting to this? How long has this gone on? Went from wanting to be a psychiatrist herself, to wanting to die.

..but she was never able to muster the will to finish school or start a career.
Couldn't have been  too long if presently only 28.
Seems like they would try more mental health help before resorting to just ending it.
