12-Foot, Overweight Black Woman Statue Erected In Times Square As 'Contrast' To 'White Men' Hero Statues (3 Viewers)

According to the group that sponsored this statue, its purpose is to "challenge who should be rendered immortal through monumentalization."

I mean, why build a monument to some white chaplain who went to war to provide care and comfort to soldiers who were wounded and dying when you can build a 12-foot monument to some imaginary woman who looks like she's shopping at Target?

I wasn't asking you to explain your taste in women, but what you found unattractive about the statue.
well she is overweight..but the discussion has moved past that to the symbolism involved of the statue given prominence to offset the
"2 white guys" = DEI

here is a quote from the artists ( see OP)
"Installed at ground level on a wide low base, the work invites engagement with the hundreds of thousands of people who traverse the plazas each day, the woman in Grounded in the Stars cuts a stark contrast to the pedestaled permanent monuments — both white, both men — which bookend Duffy Square, while embodying a quiet gravity and grandeur," the Times Square Arts group says on its site.

Still not seeing white man bad there. Still looking for the source?

Try self awareness.

That's as American as it gets.
absolutely not
Equality of opportunity is a fine thing. it gives those disadvantaged a chance to compete.
Equity of outcome is odious - it manipulates real world outcome in to a mold/formulate to force less qualified into winning a position

Who said equity of outcome? Equity of where the starting line is would be nice.

Are you furious?

This is a pretty idealized statue of a chubby black girl. Like, they coulda made her way uglier if they'd really wanted to. Now all the chubb black girls of New York have something to aspire to. That's nice for them.

so there is a rather unattractive 12 foot statue in Time Square - can we comment on that?
Unattractive? You don't like black women?
Maybe Trump can get a 14 foot white guy erected in Times Square. That'll make MAGA happy.

No kidding, right? I mean, who are these people, anyway? Some dumb farmers. Why paint a picture of some imaginary people who look like they're bailing hay?

(Imagine the uproar if they were black. *)

What's the obvious reason? Or were you only intending to amuse us with your meekness?

You don't think @annata and 3/4 of the worldwide right-wing media sites posting about this sculpture (and generally ignoring all other sculptures that aren't about a black woman) aren't obvious in their reasoning?

Why else would you need to purposefully erect a "strong contrast" to statues of "white men" and question who it is that should be "monumentalized?"

Why not erect a statue of an actual woman in an actual place where she actually did something worth "monumentalizing?"

All this is is a monument to virtue signaling.

It doesn't. it's a rendition supporting DEI. DEI by it's nature is flawed/un_American with the emphasis on Equity to drive inclusion
You claiming "DEI is flawed" and unAmerican is just you making an unsupported claim. It isn't just because you say so. It is just you making the claim.

How is this bad? Something isn't simply "bad" just because you think it represents something you don't like. Or in this case, something you've been instructed to dislike.

You're only telling us what inspires you while openly fantasizing about what inspires black women.

This is just unempathetic and doesn't recognize reality.

Equality of opportunity doesn't work for many, especially when you lie about the opportunities being available. You don't actually have an equal opportunity to succeed if someone else has more than you from the beginning and/or others hoard resources that specifically keep you from reaching higher. A person in a wheelchair cannot climb stairs with their wheelchair simply because every is allowed to climb those stairs. A person who is kept from learning actual science, math, reading, etc when young does not have the same opportunities as someone who is given tutors from the time of birth to teach them all this and more.

Wow.
