Not to be confused with this Singles Day:

Singles Awareness Day (or Singles Appreciation Day) is celebrated on February 15 each year.[1] It is an unofficial holiday celebrated by single people. It serves as a complement to Valentine's Day for people who are single, and not married or in a romantic relationship. It is a celebration of love in all forms recognizing the love between friends, family and loving yourself.[2] Some people who observe Singles Awareness Day do so out of spite for Valentine's Day, as a Hallmark holiday, or for other reasons.[3]

Singles awareness day is also referred to as an antithesis of Valentine's Day, especially when celebrated on February 14.[3][4]

The United Kingdom has two 'days' attributed to highlighting single status. Since Single Awareness Day spells SAD and a group of dating experts wanted to highlight a more positive tone, creating National Singles Day. It is celebrated on 11 March with the aim to empower those who identify themselves as single.[5] It is unclear who is behind SAD in the UK.[4][6]

On Singles Awareness Day, single people gather to celebrate or to commiserate in their single status. Some want to remind romantic couples that they don't need to be in a relationship to celebrate life

Here in the United States, November 11 is Veterans Day, when we honor all the people who have served in the American armed forces (including the American Revolution).

I just checked, and it used to be called Armistice Day, for it originally celebrated the end of World War I (the fighting stopped at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month of the year).

*****

1. For our international friends who are studying English, there are three ways to spell the day:

a. Veteran's Day.
b. Veterans' Day.
c. Veterans Day.
i. It appears that most government documents and American newspapers now prefer "c." Many people now consider the apostrophe as unnecessary clutter.

2. The last Monday of May is Memorial Day, which remembers those who died while fighting in a war.

In the US, it is Veterans Day.... As a veteran, I usually take the day off... Already have my flag out... (for those wondering, it's the regular ole red, white and blue... Not some rainbow flag, not a gadsen flag, not a black and blue flag, just the regular ole red, white and blue...)

In Canada, it is called Remembrance Day in honour of all those who have lost their lives defending our values.

I remember my granddad's story. He had a wooden box on his dresser and there was a day he told what was inside when we were kids.

Irish men like him could earn American citizenship if they served in Europe. The soldiers woke before dawn and prepared to be attacked. They waited. Hours went by . They heard church bells in the distance, and horns blaring in another direction. They looked across the field and the Germans were all standing. Soon the word came through and the soldiers walked out into the field. Each man found another from the other side, it was a celebration.

Everyone carried a lucky charm. My granddad said his was a little pencil. His new German buddy had a single playing card. So one has a pencil with no paper, and the other had a card without a game. They traded them that day and he kept that 5 of diamonds in the wooden box.

He said, " In one minute we were even dancing, but the minute before I would have killed him. "

It means only one thing.....

WAKANDA FOREVER!
What has this got to do with 11/11?

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is a 2022 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Black Panther. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the sequel to Black Panther (2018) and the 30th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is directed by Ryan Coogler, who co-wrote the screenplay with Joe Robert Cole, and stars Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Dominique Thorne, Florence Kasumba, Michaela Coel, Tenoch Huerta, Martin Freeman, and Angela Bassett. In the film, the leaders of Wakanda fight to protect their nation in the wake of King T'Challa's death.

This is a good post. We have had entire threads about Armistice Day and the end of World War I here on Debate Politics in the past. In fact, we have even posted some poetry written by the War Poets, who were mainly men who served in World War I. I think it is excellent for people in the United States today to be aware of how our Veterans Day originated. It is also appropriate to honor veterans on Veterans Day and our war dead on Memorial Day. Knowing the horrors of World War I enables us to make more informed decisions about the laws of warfare. No one wants to repeat some of the practices used by the parties waging war in World War I and they were the basis for determining what is a war crime (bombing of civilians, use of poison gas, etc.).

@ Veterans Day

Veterans Day originated in the Armistice Day holiday commemorating the November 11, 1918, armistice at 11 a.m. (hence "the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month"), which suspended active hostilities and effectively ended the First World War.
President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11, 1919, the first Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations …."
