‘She never saw it coming’: Stranger pummeled Muslim teen waiting at Michigan ER, video shows

A Muslim woman was attacked by a man in the waiting room of Beaumont Hospital in Dearborn, Michigan. A lawsuit issued on behalf of the woman said she received several punches to the head in a racially motivated attack. There was no warning before the attack. A 19-year-old Muslim woman had just walked up to the reception desk at an emergency room in Michigan last month when a man came up behind her and started pummeling her — first into the desk, then into a wall and finally to the ground, video shows.“She never saw it coming,” Majed Moughni, the victim’s attorney, told WDIV. The teen college student had initially gone to Beaumont Hospital in Dearborn, Michigan, around 3:30 a.m. on Feb. 10 after slipping on some ice. The woman was worried she had broken her jaw during the fall. The attack happened as she was handing over registration information to the receptionist, according to a lawsuit filed against the alleged assailant and the hospital in Wayne County court. The woman was dressed in a Muslim headscarf, or hijab, at the time of the attack. “The circumstantial evidence would lead one to conclude that the attack was religiously motivated,” Moughni said in a statement to McClatchy. He added that of the five people in the lobby at the time of the attack “my client was the only one who wore the hijab.”

John Deliz, 57, was arrested and charged with assault after the attack, the Detroit News reports. He is still in custody and will have a competency hearing in May. Deliz had been discharged from the same hospital himself just prior to the attack. But he was loitering in the ER lobby accosting other patients, according to a police report — including asking for cigarettes and trying to wander down adjacent hallways. Hospital security told Deliz he could stay in the hospital as he waited for his ride, but only if he would “sit down and leave the other patients alone,” according to the police report. Deliz and the victim didn’t know one another, according to police, and the lawsuit alleges he attacked her “for no other reason but because she was a Muslim.” The lawsuit also alleges that the hospital was negligent in not preventing the attack, and seeks $25,000 in damages. The lawsuit accuses Deliz of ethnic intimidation as well. “She’s terrified. She’ll probably never see life the way she did before this accident,” Moughni told WXYZ. She’s afraid to go outdoors, she’s afraid to go in public.” Representatives for the hospital said that staff there responded appropriately and swiftly. The situation was contained within seconds of the attack beginning, video shows. “Beaumont security personnel responded immediately and took action to protect the patient and others in the emergency room,” the hospital said in a statement to the Detroit News. “Dearborn Police were contacted and Beaumont staff cooperated fully in the investigation. We take pride in our service to this diverse community and want all patients to feel welcome at Beaumont.”

Wow this dude is a sicko, probably legally mentally unstable and I hope he gets locked up. If he is fixable I hope that happens too but I doubt it.

What a wacko. But it does look like hospital security responded immediately. Granted, this never should have happened.

Yeah not sure I agree with the lawsuit without knowing exactly what this guy was doing before hand since they responded so quickly but im super glad he is still in custody. total nut.

"Sicko" is an understatement. Hope he will live a long time in prison.

I don't however agree with a lawsuit against the hospital. Watching the video security responded practically instantly. It's unreasonable to expect hospital staff to recognize that the guy was going to attack someone with his fists.

He's a really big guy, beating on a petite women! Wow! And he sucker-punched her from behind! It's like everything a a man can do wrong. I'm at a loss, with this one.

I don't agree with a lawsuit against the hospital either. They acted as quickly as they could in the video. They got the woman out of harm's way quickly and dealt with the perp. There was no delay in their actions.

However, it looks to me like the staff did their jobs quite well. I can't agree with a lawsuit against them.

I agree for now I said the same thing.
The only possible way the suit is justified is this guy WAS making a commotion earlier and security already dealt with him at least one time. That alone is too light for me but if theres a lot more we dont know to that part of that story i guess possible negligence could be at hand. Secondary support for that would be he was a patient that was discharged. "If" he was that mentally unstable maybe it could be claimed they should have caught it and he should have already been held.

Again I still CURRENTLY disagree with the suit just saying that could possibly change.

Agreed, but judging from the staff's reaction in the video, I would have a very difficult time faulting them for it. They reacted quickly to keep her from harm as much as they could. I can't see how they could have possibly done more. I also am not sure why her being muslim is relevant, unless he was shouting anti-muslim slurs. Was that the case?

I guess I just see this as a wacko doing what they do. I'm not sure I see this as anti-muslim. It certainly was not the case as the staff is concerned. I don't see that her being muslim is relevant.

only if he was completely unruly and he should have already been removed or never discharged. If neither of those cases can be made then my opinion will stay the same and i dont support the suit.

The newscasters claim the guy was hassling other people earlier, but the staff allowed him to remain there if he agreed to chill.

But who knows?

Sure, but I still fail to see the muslim connection. I don't see how that is relevant. I'm not sure why that is part of the headline. Seems to me, the guy was a wacko and didn't care who he attacked. I'm just trying to get the "muslim" angle, and I don't see it.

If I missed something, please correct me.

He had been discharged from the hospital and was loitering in the ER accosting other patients. Security were aware of this fact and he should not have been allowed to stay on the premises unless the Security Staff were monitoring him closely to prevent any incidents from occurring. Poor choice on their behalf to allow him to stay unless they made sure he sat his ass down and they were right there to make sure he did not move until he was escorted to his ride when it arrived.

That’s brutal. Something tells me the guy will be found incompetent to stand trial and will spend some time institutionalized. But judging just from the video I don’t see the lawsuit against the hospital having merit, but there may be more to the story.

Reason is seldom involved with lawsuits regarding hospitals. This could involve:
Hospital
Admitting Clerk
Security Guard
Security Company if its contracted
ER Doctor for releasing the patient (who was obviously unstable)
ER Doctor contracting firm if they are under contract and not direct hires
ER Nurse
Lab Technician

I think its realistic that a lawsuit could involve those people at a minimum...and the contracting firms would likely offer a settlement of court fees plus 5k a piece to make it all go away.

Huh, I wonder if Trump's going to pay his legal fees?

Thx :)

:lamo You seriously ask that after the post you made? Wow.

Trolling is not making a glib comment on an elected official, (just because he is your hero.)

You guys elected his brother.

And you have the audacity to comment on the perp in the video after electing the worst person in the world to the highest office, you judges of character?

That's worth the laughing head> :lamo

Thx :lamo

Interesting that the Miami Herald knows that
in a racially motivated attack
before
will have a competency hearing in May.
How quickly we judge. If you have ever been to, or worked in, an ED, you should know that ED sees just about everything, strange and stranger yet.
Why is this an issue? Because the victim is Muslim? Of all the things to gossip about.
